No. It tries to be philosophical and smart, but I found that it falls flat every time. The philosophy makes no sense and everything "smart" that the main character does happens because "he's just that good", rather than because the author actually decided to write well. You can do way better, but also way worse I suppose.

I would advise Neon Genesis Evangelion. For a (very short) while it seems like a fairly typical shonen genre mecha anime, but oh boy does that change. It's sort of difficult to describe, but it is definitely fantastic.

Also, Cowboy Bebop is just awesome.

Serial Experiments Lain (utterly sublime)

Texhnolyze (very violent)

Boogiepop Phantom (incomprehensible, but beautiful)

Monster (labyrinthine)

Akira (amazing)

Paranoia Agent (shocking)

I'll probably get yelled at because I'm no expert... But I recommend Howl's Moving Castle

See, I thought the same thing about death note but I liked code Geass. Then again, Code Geass made a lot more sense the second time through for me. And the philosophy does make sense. At least to me.

I'd recommend these as more or less fitting the bill:
Grave of the Fireflies [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=110]
I've been planning on watching it as I've heard great things about it. Is it better to watch subbed or dubbed?

I don't think that counts as deep and smart, although it is absolutely fantastic and my favorite film ever and OP should definitely watch it.

Yeah pretty much all of these, plus...

Ergo Proxy...

Haibane Renmei...

and the Ghost In The Shell Movies... I didn't really like the series very much...

Also, Serial Experiments Lain... just to reiterate the point to watch it... it's amazing...<.<

Crayon Shinchan ;p

Seriously, for manga, try Tezuka's Black Jack or Buddha. Also, Eiji Otsuka and Shou Tajima's 'MDP Psycho', Housui Yamazaki's 'Mail', and Eiji Otsuka and Housui Yamazaki's 'Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service' are all dark (and in the case KCDS, funny) supernatural thrillers. For SciFi, you cant go wrong with Shiro Maumuni's 'Ghost in the Shell' 1 and 2. Lot of Descartes-ish philosophy running through it.

Seriously, if you want Akira, you have to read the Graphic Novels, the movie does not do it any justice.

For "deep", thought provoking Anime, anything by Miyazaki will do, as well as "5cm per second"

I want to put another suggestion up for code geass, that anime is just epic, i'm tied on if i like geass or death note more.

Also this KIND OF fits in, if you think about how each person is effected by certain choices then school days is an epic anime, also the final episode will make your brain leak from your ears in a wtf just happened this was not meant to happen kind of way.

Also the anime movie "the girl who lept through time" is epic, get this.... it's about a girl right and what she does is... leap through time! based in a high school, she goes back to make her bad decicions turn good, but then gets stuck in a paradox because she changed so much that someone else had to suffer in her place, she needs to correct the stuff she corrected but corrected incorrectly, that and a few more nice little twists (it's not really a spoiler, it's obvious right from the start)

Neon Genesis Evangelion - There is kind of a divide on this one, but I feel its one you need to see and decide for yourself

Ergo Proxy - Very, very, very fucking slow, but still really good, and did I mention Radiohead is the outro.

Also can I suggest not listening to the Elfin Lied suggestions.
I will admit its the deepest Hentai i've seen, and no im not saying it because the amensia neko is constantly showing her tits because she doesn't know any better. Though it helps.

LUckily, I have stored my generic response to these sorts of threads.

Every time on these threads, people will put the anime they especially enjoyed. I feel this is too personal. To subjective.

So you know what? Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he can get his own damn fish so he never has to ask anyone for their fish.

I'd recommend Wings of Honneamise, definately one of the best up there with Akira, and Macross Plus.

2 suggestions:

My friends tell me liar game is FREAKIN amazing, especially if you liked death note's style.

And I also personally recommend gundam 00. It's a pretty smart anime, and you have REALLY good giant robot fights. It's both intelligent and fun to watch.

EDIT: Liar game is a manga, and gundam 00 is an anime.

High School of the Dead, it has a very nice plot and the last few episodes of the first season are really stellar.

Just look past the completely insane amounts of fan service.

I've just finished watching Grave of the Fireflies. Watch it. That was one of the most poignant things I've ever seen.

Also Welcome to the NHK is a good anime. It's about a shut-in who meets a girl that promises to cure him of his reclusive nature. There's a lot of drama and I think it qualifies as being deep.

While I wouldn't call all of my suggestions smart or "Deep", they're different and intelligent enough to stand above all of the Shounen/fan-service shows out there;

Durarara!!: Set in the mid 2000s, this is the story about the Ikebukuro district in Tokyo and the people and groups of people in it. There's not one specific main character in the story, but every character has his or her spotlight and their own back-story that reveals more about the world and the plot.

Now and Then, Here and There: Young boy sees young girl. Young boy climbs to the top of a smoke stack to talk to young girl. Young boy and young girl then get attacked and pulled away into an alternate dimension where the young boy is forced to join the child army of the most powerful and insane dictator that dimension has ever known. It also might be important to add that this anime takes the premise entirely serious and there is absolutely no comedy whatsoever. It's glorious, it's horrifying, and it's absolutely brilliant. Also, the American dub is pretty good too.

Serial Experiments Lain: Alright, this may be the "Are you being pretentious?" pick of the bunch. The story begins with a girl (called Lain) who starts to get mysterious emails from a dead classmate...and that's all I can tell you about the story without getting into spoilers and interpretations. This is by far the most bizarre and weird anime I've ever seen, but that's what makes it so appealing. If you're into extremely outlandish anime, this may be the perfect show for you.

Digimon Tamers: Alright, this is almost entirely put in her because of nostalgia, but the show does have some very good things about it. I can't quite tell what those things are, but the show is genuinely good. However, you may want to watch the first two seasons of Digimon (respectively Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02[footnote]You may just want to look up character bios and plot summaries for this season since it's complete rubbish and not worth your time.[/footnote]) to understand how the Digimon stories have worked before it and there are a few jokes and tid-bits in Tamers for the fans that did watch the shows. Also, you should know the difference between a digimon tamer and a digi-destined; digi-destined are chosen individuals who are called upon to battle a threat to the digital world while digimon tamers are just individuals who happen to have a digivice and a digimon. Also, if you haven't realized this by now, I am a complete Digimon fanboy.
