These guys were the Kids in the Hall's house band, and played their theme song. This track was a minor alternative hit on MuchMusic in Canada in the mid-90s:

And the Propellerheads were one of my favourite late 90s electronica/drum & bass groups (and one of the only ones to incorporate real drums). To be fair, they used a few vocal samples and had Shirley Bassey do guest vocals on a couple of tracks. Everyone probably knows "Spybreak!" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCBL33NKvPA] from the lobby scene in The Matrix, but this track's really cool too:

90% of all post-rock. Slint, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mono, Toe, 65daysofstatic, World's End Girlfriend, Mogwai, Talk Talk, Sigur Rós, Explosions in the Sky, etc.

Ambient, instrumental hip-hop, and modern classical are good grounds to explore for instrumental music, and if you're feeling daring, noise.

Well, since there's a lot of gamers here I suggest Machinae Supremacy. I've only heard one of their songs, but I love it a lot.

These guys have a huge collection of albums, mostly brilliant! Give them a decent listen, there are so many elements involved.

I'm dissapointed that nobody has posted them already.
I was about to cry in shame myself. For some reason they've been around longer than Animals as Leaders but everyone (that knows AAL) that I show it to is like "OH IT'S LIKE AAL". Even when it's not really.
Here are some actual songs from them, since I guess I should post them:
Probably the best song off of Carving Desert Canyons. That album as a whole has a more "good mood" feel to it than the new one.
This is my favorite off of the new one, The Collective. A much darker tone than the previous two albums, but absolutely phenomenal musicianship. Pay attention to the bass towards the end, it's jizz-worthy.
If I had to recommend an album from these guys, you can't go wrong with Carving Desert Canyons or The Collective. Both albums are great in their own ways.

abit of blue sky black death for ya OP.
some nujabes god rest his soul
tsutchie
boogie bong

most of what I listen to is hip hop so all the instrumental stuff I know is pretty much hip hop beats. But blue sky black death seems to be moving away from hip hop which might be more to your liking. Heres an example of their newer stuff.
