The Sly, Jak and Ratchet Trilogys are all amazing, but you've proably played them all before if you were PS2 gamer.

You want Demons' Souls, the Journey collection (which includes Flow and Flower; goes for 30 USD), Uncharted, Valkyria Chronicles, Ratchet and Clank and Ico/Shadow of the Colossus. All of those should keep you busy for the moment.

The God of War franchise.
LittleBigPlanet 2.
Infamous 1-2.
The Killzone franchise.
The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Metal Gear Solid from the PSN, and Metal Gear Solid 4.
Demon's/Dark Souls.
Okami HD.
The Resistance franchise.
Flower/Journey (they both come in a collection by thatgamecompany, which also includes flOw).
The Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD collection.
The Disgaea franchise if you like strategy RPGs.
Tales of Graces f if you like more 'classic' action-JRPGs.
Star Ocean: The Last Hope International if you're either a fan of the franchise, or a fan of JRPGs.
White Knight Chronicles II (it includes the first one as well) again if you're a fan of JRPGs, though it has a very... interesting combat system.
I've never played any of them and have no knowledge of what of their franchises are available on the PS3, but the Rachet & Clank and Jak & Daxter games are generally received fairly well too.

I'm going to go against the flow [http://cache.ohinternet.com/images/2/24/I_see_what_you_did_there_super.jpg] here and recommend that you download Journey and not buy the collector's disc. I felt that out of the three games in the collection (Journey, Flow and Flower), Journey was by far the strongest title. And if the parent company's website is to be believed, Journey is the most downloaded game of all time for PSN.

Also, if you do get the latest Ratchet and Clank titles, don't forget about Quest for Booty:

Then why am I buying a playstation 3? This is very problematic.

Actually, I have wanted to try out the mass effect series. I want pick it up sometime, but do you have any other suggestions?

I think they are releasing a complete set of the trilogy on PS3 soon , I saw it on amazon so keep an eye out for it.

my personal favorite for the PS3 has always been Folklore, murderous mystery solving in a twisted fairy tale setting with JRPG elements.
Little Big Planet is a close second.

I own no physical copies of games for the PS3. That being said, however:

It's a good start on the PS Store...unless you have these games playable elsewhere.

I liked the Killzone series a lot, Uncharted series (I have not played 3 yet, my PC was repaired and I am mainly a PC gamer), I loved Brutal Legend, Ico/Shadow of The Colossus, Heavy Rain, and Unfinished Swan. I didn't really like Journey, but others might.
