I'd recommend Super Meat Boy. It's a really challenging platformer but its great fun.

but will all these old games work fine on my windows 7 64 bit OS? coz rayman 1 and 2 arent working . saying that this version of windows is not compatible with the game.
what should i do ?

The PC doesn't have that many Jak and Daxter style 3D platformers, other than console ports its more known for 2D platformers

Sonic Generations and VVVVV are both highly recomended and aren't that difficult to beat.
Beyond Good and Evil
Prince Of Persia
Mirrors Edge.
Gun Girl 2

While not a platformer per-say I recommend Noitu Love 2 and Aquaria both are easy and great fun

i did come to know that the two most critically acclaimed platformers on the pc are PSYCHONAUTS and RAYMAN 2. how good are these two ?

Ridiculously good and insanely good, respectively. The last level of Psychonauts remains my "Best WAT WAT WAT Level Ever", the Milkman Conspiracy remains my "Best Level Theme Ever", and in Rayman 2, "The Precipice" remains the "Best Chase Sequence Ever" and the whole game is insanely varied in theme and meshes very well. PLAY THEM. Get them on gog.com and PLAY THEM.

Also, the old Tomb Raider games are more slow, methodical platformer adventures than action games.

And if you have a controller and haven't played Super Meat Boy yet, do that (I play on keyboard, but I'm told that I'm insane for doing it).

Right-click them, go to properties, click the "compatibility" tab, and experiment.

Alternatively, buy them from gog.com, they'll usually work first try.

I plan on picking it up soon even though I normally hate platformers

A very fun game, though it was be extremely unforgiving at times. Beautiful piano music thats on par with games like Journey. However, the game itself sometimes doesn't work. I've had to uninstall and reinstall twice already...
