Opeth hasn't been a death metal band for a long time. They went fully progressive around "Damnation". Theres nothing death metal left about them, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but still. Calling them a melodic death metal band is inaccurate.
I disagree completely, here are my reasons:

I always found Sepultura to be melodic.
Ratamahatta is probably my favorite metal song of all time.

Opeth definitely ...

I was a fan of Haggard as a teenager as well. Big German band with something like 25 members - orchestral instruments, sopranos, tenors, and RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!ers.

Not sure if Haggard would quite classify as what you're looking for; but hey I figure it's got the RAAAAA!!!s, it's got double-kick, and dudes with long hair and goatees who wear black. Kinda like me when I was in high school.

Just melodic death metal? Can we expand it to deathcore and metalcore? Or even symphonic metal?
The only ones that are close to melodic death metal that I know are:
Gojira
Parkway Drive
Suicide Silence
Apocalyptica (sometimes when they have a guest singer)
Miss May I
Black Dahlia Murder

Opeth!

Opeth goddamit!

Motherfucking Opeth!

Those guys are pretty much the poster-boys for melodic death metal. They managed to do a sell out run at the Royal Albert Hall not so long ago. Do you know how many death metal bands have played the Royal Albert Hall? Not many at all, I can tell you. That's how popular they are now. Not because they've sold out, but because they've managed to win over fans by making death metal that has real melody to it.

And before anyone brings it up, no Mikael Akerfeldt doesn't just do singing. He also does one hell of a death metal roar.
I fucking love Opeth, too (saw them in london), but they aren't melodic death metal. They're half extreme-prog-metal/ prog-rock.

Pick one :D

I doubt it fits int eh genre, but Nightwish is pretty good if your after something with bit of orchestral backing.
Symphonic Power Metal. Not the same thing.
If we're being picky, Opeth is progressive, not melodic.

OT: My favorite melodic death metal band is easily The Black Dahlia Murder (though they do incorporate elements from other genres).

I lost track of all those different labels that seemed to pop up like mushrooms between the early nineties and, well, five minutes ago.

However, I like the following combo. They do have melodies in their... sweet, sweet music that they make. Try it on for size.

Hmmmm. Dubstep?

It might be both, actually. Or Deathgrind. Or Deaththrash.

When everything pretty much flatlines heavily on the bassline and makes breathing hard, it might be doom. Or one of my personal favourites, Drone Metal. The more speakers, and the larger they are, the better. You still listen to music, but it's mostly a very physical experience, with the constant bass pressing the air out of your lungs, smacking you in the face and punching you in the gut. Fun for the whole family.

Here, have a map to the Land of Metal.

YAY! Lookie here! It's the Map of Metal! http://mapofmetal.com/#/home

first post and its in a metal thread. im off to a great start
melo death... lets see melo death...
most of my suggestions have already been... well suggested. Arsis, Allegaeon, Ne Obliviscaris. Im not 100% on genre, but i know most of these are tech/brutal death metal and ive been listening to them alot lately.
Hour of Penance- Sedition
Spawn of Possesion- Incurso
Dawn of Dementia- Residuum

also, System Divide. Because Miri Milman is gorgeous and 'The Concious Sedation' is awseome.
