I am not going to personally recommend it since I am not really a big fan of the 'classics' and I think most old games have aged terribly. But if that's your thing GOG seems to be the place to go!
However I urge you to try out Mafia, a really brilliant, story driven and atmospheric Third Person Shooter from 2001. A game that holds up today (although the gameplay is not as impressive as when it first came out, the story and immersion remain intact) Everyone even remotely interested in action games should try it, sadly not too many people have played it and at the time of its release it was overshadowed by GTA3 (which ironically, is nowhere near as good as Mafia)
Also, the sequel is coming out next month.
I don't know how much you can turn down the graphics, but I thin Alien Swarm is simple enough not to be much of an issue. Besides, it is FREE!TraceurRyuk said:

As people said, Morrowind. Also Deus Ex is great, and Majesty. That's on sale on Steam right now for $5 US, so get it. It's a different kind of RTS, I quite enjoy it.
