Check out Farscape. Under-rated Sci-Fi gem. I would recommend Babylon 5, but Polarity stole my recommendation, so I will let her keep it.

Also: Twin Peaks. One of the best television shows ever made. Surreal, haunting, engaging, clever, horrifying, funny, well-acted, well-written (well, with one exception)... All around great show.

Finally: Buffy. Cheesy and silly? Yes. Still awesome and fun as hell? 100% yes.

They're both comedies, but I do really love them:
Its a lot like what I'd imagine an Aperture Science office building would be like.

And there's also the show Dead Like Me. One of my favorite shows of all time, just be sure to not watch the horrible direct-to-dvd movie of it. Its made by the same guy who did Pushing Daisies and Wonderfalls.
There's a lot of different aspects to the show, and I really can't think of any one scene to link to that would properly represent it, but its not hard to find. Its even still at my local Blockbuster in the old tv shows section. (yes, I still use blockbuster. XD)

Good taste there.

From the Battlestar/Doctor Who, I'd advise Firefly, if you haven't seen it already - it only lasted a season, but it's funny, well cast, and has the technological feel of Battlestar - probably because they both had the same special effects studio. And I see that Deep Space 9 has already been suggested - I'd say it's the best of the Star Treks, but The Next Generation is also a fun diving off point - I got into both that and Doctor Who at around the same time. There's also LOST - some complain that it's just ridiculous, but I find it's a strong show with interesting characters and gradually escalates the suspension of the disbelief so that if you're watching from the beginning, it'll feel pretty natural - particularly if you're used to Doctor Who.

As for comedy, I see Blackadder Season 2 and onwards on the list, and I have to echo that.

There's various historical dramas that're quite good - The Borgias (Jeremy Irons as a corrupt Pope), I Claudius (Dated, but still good), Deadwood (American Frontier).

I'll just recommend my all-time favourite: Boston Legal.
Great characters, intelligent writing (encompassing a multitude of relevant topics), and it doesn't skimp on the laughs either. Spader and Shatner at their absolute best.
