Yeah that's right, I avoid any video game with an anime art style because I can't stand the medium as a social justice warrior. I don't even like Japanese games in general aside from Mario, and look up to Phil Fish mostly for artistic value. Still, I have friends that love these sort of games and keep telling me to just lift the stigma for gaming.

I thought against my judgment, I'll just give some a try but don't know where to really begin.

Any genres you like? I'm guessing RPGs, but anything else?

Ys: Memories of Celceta (Vita) - A very solid action RPG with puzzle dungeons. I think it's on sale on PSN right now. The whole series is very good, by the way. If you want something more retro you could try Ys Chronicles Book I and II (those are on sale on Steam this weekend).

999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (DS) - A visual novel/adventure game that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Atelier Rorona Plus (PS3) - This game is Japanese to the max. Cute graphics but with a complex crafting system. You play an alchemist trying to save your shop. Part of the game is handing in assignments on time (time management, yay!) but there's also time to freely explore areas and craft new items from recipes.

Long Live the Queen is on sale on Steam right now, and it runs on pretty much anything. You guide a princess on her way to her coronation, mainly by setting her lessons for the morning and afternoon, doing her duties as crown princess, and avoiding death from all manner of people and things that would want to kill a vulnerable heir to a throne.

It's great, even haters of the genre will like it.

The Tales of series is a good place to start.

Tales of Symphonia Chronciles, Tales of Graces F, Tales of Xillia, Tales of Xillia 2 for PS3.
Tales of Hearts R for Vita.
Tales of the Abyss for 3DS.

Eternal Sonata, Valkyria Chronicles, Ni No Kuni are also games to get you started on the PS3.
Freedom Wars, Danganronpa 1&2 for the Vita.
Shin Megami Tensei IV, Rune factory, Persona Q for the 3DS.

Well, I'd recommend 999 For 3DS and Virtues Last Reward for PSVita. These games are 2 parts of a trilogy. They are basically visual novels that have puzzles and really interesting stories.

Also, Persona 4 Golden for PSV and other Shin Megami Tensei games for 3DS and PS2 (either via emulator or classics collection for PS3).
Those games are... On the darker side. For example in P4 (which is quite light and humorous compared to others) the story circles around group of high-schoolers who investigate a serial killer case. But it's really good and even people who don't actually like animu can at the very least appreciate P4. And as I said, try out other SMT games.

I could also recommend Danganronpa, but you may find it to be "too animu".

EDIT: Almost forgot about Valkyria Chronicles for PS3/PC.

I'd second rogue galaxy on ps2, that game was so good that my username is stolen from one of the cooler character there, however many years on it is I could still name most of the characters.

"White Knight chronicles" is that series spiritual successor and is, in a word, incredible. If you get white knight chronicles 2 (easily under a tenner) it includes the entire first game free too, so that's a lot of gameplay.

other than that: sengoku basara samurai heroes is basically dynasty warriors with fewer but WAYYYYYYY more individual characters. If your up for importing, sengoku basara 4 is one of my and my gf's alltime favourite games, is very anime-y, and some absolutely beautiful person has made a FULL translation guide of what was already a fairly easy to understand game. I managed to 100% the gme despite being oesnt speak a word of Japanese.

Actually, id say your best bet would be one of those games. For reference, Sengoku basara as a series is so anime they eventually made an anime out of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkBeNbzDh3U is some basic gameplay if you wanna look

Since you've got a PS Vita you should check out Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable; they're amazing JRPG's that have an anime feel while avoiding the pitfalls of the genre. Shin Megami Tensei in general is a good shout; SMT IV is available on 3DS and Nocturne is on PS2, though it's debatable how 'anime' they are. They're all very dark games.
I'm not honestly sure why you'd buy a PS Vita if you don't like 'anime' games; it's about all there is on the platform nowadays. I'll second Danganronpa if you can stand Visual Novels; it's got a wonderful dark story and good characterization in a murder-mystery style setting.
There's a veritable treasure trove of worthwhile JRPG's on the platforms you own; a simple google search will give you some pointers for the best available. Some random recommendations from me would be:
FFIX/FFVI/FFVII are on the PSN store for Vita or PS3. Not sure how 'anime' they are though
Pokemon X/Y, as well as the older DS games are good picks for the 3DS
Devil Survivor 1/2 have an anime style (albeit a pretty dark one) and are on DS with some 3DS remakes on the way. Also Strange Journey and SMT IV are worth looking at.
Really too many to list for the PS2- almost anything in the 'Tales of' series, FFX, Nocturne, Devil Summoner, and so on.

The Phoenix Wright trilogy on 3DS
Persona 4 Golden on Vita
Valkyria Chronicles, Ni No Kuni and Asura's Wrath (that game is so anime, it even has placeholders for commercial breaks) on PS3

Valkyria Chronicles.

It is the most anime game I've ever seen.

-Cutesy art style
Check.
- Youthful looking characters.
Check.
- Painfully awkward dialogue.
Check.
- Young, male. slightly awkward, improbably competent and utterly uncharismatic protagonist.
Check.
- Very, very, very adopted little sister. Who is adopted.
Check.
- Standoffish girl who harbours a crush on main character.
Check.
- Very high cutscene/gameplay ratio.
Check.

Oddly enough, steam is doing a sale on that very 'theme'

I can't vouch for what they're selling, but... It was certainly an interesting list, seeing what they've classified under that heading:

The ones on sale I recommend are:
-The Ys games (best not to start with Origin since that's the sort of prequel that's a lot more fun if you're familiar with the series)
-The Sacred Tears TRUE (great little RPGmaker game that's perfect for playing in short bursts)
-Long Live the Queen (there's a lot of trial and error involved, but playthroughs are quick and there are a ton of paths to explore. Sort of like a roguelike in proze)
-Analogue: A Hate Story (good VN)
-Recettear (A very fun simulation game in an RPGlike game were instead of a hero you are a shopkeeper)
-The Legend of Heroes: Trials in the Sky (very solid turn-based JRPG)

Now, stuff like Hatoful Boyfriend is fun too, but that stuff is like a 10/10 on the 'WTF Japan' scale.

Cant go wrong with Reccetear, Trails in the Sky and Valkyria Chronicles.

The former 2 only have fully rendered character sprites for dialog, so they may be easier to settle into.

The only anime game that ever really stuck out to me was Dark Cloud 2. Dark Cloud 2 was awesome and I really want another game in the series. It has some very unique game elements and the combat is very enjoyable.

But you have a fucking Choccobo for an avatar!?

Thats like saying god I hate chocolate bars, then having a picture of a mars bar as your avatar. So you are a final fantasy fan that doesn't like anime games or Japanese games?

Seems legit
