I just got my first game console in over 10 years, the Wii (with MotionPlus :D) yesterday for Christmas. I have 3 games, Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, and Super Mario Galaxy. I have played one before because my cousins & my dad all have one, but they don't have alot of games. I received a $20 gift card from my stepmom's parents to go to GameStop & get another game. I just don't know what game to get. I'm looking for insight from others who have a Wii or have played games on a Wii first before I go out & buy a game that I'll end up hating.

Smash Brothers Brawl (if you haven't played Melee), Sin & Punishment 2 (if you can find a copy), or a Wii Points card if you have an internet connection (with which, buy World of Goo or a Bit.Trip game). That should get you started.

Also, No More Heroes is popular round here, although I haven't played it, and standard issue Nintendo franchises (if you can track down the Metroid Prime Trilogy and not played the first two Prime games, it's a bargain).

I've got the new Goldeneye 007 Wii. Singleplayer's pretty good, but the split-screen multiplayer is limited and the online multiplayer is... bad.

But, since it has splitscreen my family has sunk several hours into shooting each other, it's pretty fun, but it needs more work.

I would say try some of the virtual console games, lots of them are worth it, other than that i would recommended Zelda and or no more heroes.

Almost anything with Zelda and Mario on it, Metroid Prime series, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Cart. I also highly recommend basically any classic game they have for sale from Wii points, so long as you have a Gamecube or Wii Classic controller to play it.

Donkey Kong Country Returns
Dragon Ball: Revenge of Kind Piccolo
Goldeneye 007
Monster Hunter 3
No More Heroes 1 & 2
Super Smash Brothers Brawl

I'd also buy a nintendo point card, get cave story & a SNES game. Sin & Punishment on N64 is good too.

Yes I know Cave Story is free on PC. But why not suppose a great developer/game?

my cousins have Goldeneye 007 lol. They got it for Christmas. I'd love to see what kind of classic games I can get with Wii Points.

And I'm getting a classic controller as soon as the snow melts. Lol.

Do you like platformers?

Super Mario Galaxy 2
New Super Mario Bros Wii
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Muramasa: The Demon Blade
a Boy and his Blob
Sonic Colors
Metroid: Other M
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Epic Mickey

Aside from that:
Metroid Prime Trilogy
No more Heroes
House of the Dead Overkill
Resident Evil 4

Also if you haven't played much of the gamecube library pick up a controller for cheap and dive in there, bunch of great stuff to be found.

Edit: Lastly you should check out the virtual console. There might be a bunch of games on old consoles that you've never had the chance to play, also WiiWare has some interesting exclusives.

Doesn't this really depend on the kind of games you like to play?

Mario Kart Wii is a great choice. Especially if you can do it online multiplayer with your friends (local multiplayer isn't the best).

Maybe a shooter like Resident Evil 4 or one of the Call of Duty's would be a good complement to the platforming of Mario Galaxy? I'm into FPSs as much as many (most?), but I did pick up Medal of Honour Heroes 2.

As others have said, you could do a lot worse than sticking to the Nintendo staples: especially Mario, Zelda, Metroid. I would say that I have spent more hours on the Wii on Mario games than anything else, followed closely by Zelda.

Do you like RPGs? The PSX/PS2 era of main Final Fantasy series is the thing I miss most about the Wii's games catalogue. There are the Crystal Chronicles ones, and some of the older stuff is on the Virtual Console.

The ones I have that I really like:

Legend of zelda: twilight princess
Super mario galaxy 2 (greatly recommended if you like the first one)
New super mario bros wii
Super smash bros. brawl

Oh and if you feel like getting a gamecube game, here's a few to consider:

Super mario sunshine
Legend of zelda windwaker
Mario kart double dash
Super mario sunshine
Super smash bros. melee (better than brawl imo but to each his own)
Sonic adventure DX or sonic adventure 2: battle

Considering there are so many virtual console games and due to nostalgia for many people I can't really recommend anything in-particular, I am willing to share some older nintendo games I liked though:

Super castlevania IV
Super mario bros. 3
Street fighter 2 (I think there are probs trillions of versions there though)
Super smash bros.
007 Goldeneye (don't remember if it's on the VC or not though)
Legend of zelda ocarina of time
Mario kart 64

Assuming you live in North America check out THIS list.

If you need specific underrated classic games, I'm one of the people to go to.

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned super Mario galaxy 2 yet. It is the perfect Wii game. Graphics, gameplay, challenging, and perfect usage of the wiimote and nunchuck. It's a must have.
