Suggestions on comics?

So recently I've been thinking a lot about comics, I'm not a collector or anything at this point but I have read some of the big name books, Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns etc. and thanks to scans and fan sites I'm up on the latest continuity. But recently I've been thinking about taking my fandom up a notch actually buying my comics legally, my local comicbook store is pretty far away though so I've been contemplating subscriptions. On the other hand I'm still not completely sure I'll be able to stand the painfully slow story progression of some recent comics and can't stand the pervasive "Crossover Fever" that the industry caught about a decade ago. So I'm looking for relatively standalone compressed comics.
My question to you: What title(s) do you think I should subscribe to? Any trades I should pick-up, that are absolute must haves? Keep in mind that I live in Canada and aren't willing to spend more than maybe $60.

Have you ever considered webcomics? They're usually free (I haven't run into one that isn't) and there are plenty that are entertaining long-form types. I don't keep up with any that are akin with what you seem to read often (based on your given list), but that's just my personal taste. I know there's an abundance of them that you'd probably enjoy.

Well when a webcomic artist becomes popular enough, they start making money which is good for them because then they're getting properly compensated for their effort. However then people complain because they're "selling out".

I just started comics this month aswl =)
These are the ones I have so far, they are standalone and AMAZING!
Superman: Red Son
Superman: For All Seasons
Superman: Speeding Bullets
Superman Earth One
Kingdom Come

As you can see I started off with all Supes lol. But Kingdom Come is the first series I brought, and it sparked a whole new interest. All the others are issues combined into one hardcover series

They may start selling merchandise, getting tables at conventions, or put together compilation books, but very rarely (if ever) do they take the comic off of the internet when they get successful. You're still doing it for free.

I've always wanted to read Red Son but last time I was at Chapter's I checked and it was like 30 dollar and I was just like "FUH?"
I have read Kingdom Come though and It was fantastic.

Also I'd like some suggestions for ongoing books people! Trades are all well and good for getting the full story but they're pretty expensive around here, 25-30 dollars minimum and I just don't know if it's worth it.
