MOSCOW (Reuters) - Two female suicide bombers killed at least 38 people on packed Moscow metro trains on Monday, stirring fears of a broader campaign in Russia's heartland by Islamists from the North Caucasus.

I love Putin's comment about the situation - "terrorists must be destroyed". That man is a public relations genius.


I can see why the attacks happen though, Russia has a lot of social problems and corruption that really needs to be addressed better than it is currently.

He's referring to the government's long-standing policy of Chechen repression. This sort of thing has happened before, and all they've done is harshened their terms and rhetoric. I don't think anyone's exactly clear on how blowing up a subway full of civilians is going to help, though.

Russia isn't the most stable of countries, this stuff unfortunately happens. It's not as if the government could've stopped this attack.

If only Putin were officially in power, then the terrorists would actually have someone they don't want to oppose. Putin can get away with anything short of nuking the damned area, that's how much Russia loves him.

Chechneya has wanted it's independence from Russia for awhile now (can't remember how long they've been protesting, but I think it was at least since Gorbachav was around, maybe Yeltsin.) and the Russian government has kept a strangle hold on them for, well, ever. Despite international opinion. Although I don't condone the actions taken by this group I must say that by this point it seems like the only thing the Chechnians can do is make themselves an infected thorn in Medvedev/Putin's side.

If they were Chechen, then they somewhat tried that, and had the Russian and Soviet walk all over their asses.

When has it ever? Extremists aren't exactly the most rational bunch. The Hutaree recently planned to start an overthrow of the American government by killing a cop and bombing the funeral. How that would have accomplished anything outside of pissing off a nation is beyond me.

I always questioned the idea behind suicide bombers, since they'll blow up crowds of their own people to kill a foreigner (on top of the already ridiculous notion of suicide.)
