My spidey sense was tingling ever since they introduced the Joker as a bling-wearing, smarmy hipster with 'DAMAGED' written on his forehead in crayon, are Harely became a cliche penis-envy-riddled tough punk rock girl straight out of that god-awful Sucker Punch movie.
Harley Quinn hasn't been a decent character in forever. (She'll be good in the comics from time to time, but in games/movies/shows? She's been shit 99% of the time.)
Let's face it.
A really cool character, funny with disturbing depth to her...
Has become nothing more than a jerkoff fantasy and manic-pixie-dream-girl/lol-so-RaNdOMm cardboard cut out.
Barely anything more than a sex object. (And even less as time goes on. Pretty sure next exposure she'll just be tits and legs with a "lol-so-RaNdOMm" wig. Probably in more fetish costumes to boot.)
And she had such a cool narrative back when she was made in the 90s Batman cartoon.
From what I am gathering from online critics is that the editing is poor, someone at WB or the director needs to learn how to re-edit, and the plot was recycled and a bore. The team itself, great. So a mixed bag.
I actually really liked it. I liked how balls out with the DC universe it is. It makes me actually care about the DC cinematic universe now.
Joker is the clear fail of the movie though. They tried to make Heath Ledger Joker, but as a pimp. Fuck that. Seriously, just reboot Joker again, but only after watching The Animated Series. Seriously, that's what we fucking want. Hell, Id take Mark Hamill in bad lipstick and nothing else over Leto or Ledger.
And Harley had her proper origin. A worry I am glad was relieved.

Most of it. Like, 98% if I were to give a off the cuff %. Some slight lines changed though. I do wonder if Killer Croc and Diablo had less screen time because of the change though.
i read some of the reviews there and hell its like they dont even know how to analize or what reviewing is in the first place, they sound more like entitled babies who cannot defend basic ideas. if i could resume most of them it would be like "the movie is aweful becute i make better bucuse i say i can an ib uo digri yu are ignolat" seriously im not even a fan of DC but this guys dont know what the hell an argument means, they were mostly composed of sophistry.
That's not an excuse for being, apparently, poorly edited, disjointed, confusing and basically a hack job.
What you're saying is basically that not every meal has to be fancy, and it's fine to have a hamburger once in a while. True, I agree. But you can still make a really really shitty hamburger or a really tasty one. Like The Expendables. When that came out I really hoped it'd be a juicy hamburger, instead I got a dried out McDonalds turd.
You've got a good point, there. The subject matter, plot, etc., doesn't excuse poor film making.
I saw it on opening night. I thought it was good. It was pretty much what I expected, although I think that they put far too much effort into making them sympathetic anti-heroes. Saying that, however, I did like Diablo, as he really was a bad-guy-turning-good, and repentant for his past actions, and Jay Hernandez sold it pretty well. Deadshot's storyline with his kid was very close to what was in the source material, so it worked. Harley was awesome, and I didn't hate Leto's Joker as much as I expected to. I didn't love him, but I didn't want to choke him to death like I did before I went into the theater. He worked.
The only one I really felt kept the "villans working against their will" was Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang. He really did come across like a villan who didn't want to be there, but would do what he needed to to survive. Everyone else was just a damaged hero in villan's clothes and that brings down what the Suicide Squad is supposed to be about.
The editing and thematic changes that were done were obvious, however, and that is what turned a great movie into only a good movie. It feels choppy. Some scenes and lines seemed thrown in or out of place. That was a bummer. I think if they went into the original filming with a better idea of what they were eventually going to make, the movie would have been a lot better. But hindsight is always 20/20.
Anyways, I would recommend seeing it. It's not the best super-flick ever, but it was fun and definitely worth seeing.
PS Oh, and Viola Davis fucking killed it as Waller. She's always been an awesome actress, and she did not disappoint at all.
The Suicide Squad saves the world from itself. Waller and a few others make this point that the US Gov needs a team that can handle metahuman threats, so they can put together the Squad. The first mission of the Squad, is to stop an escaped, rogue member of said Squad from destroying the world.
It's amazing how bad the reviews are for this movie. You really have to hand it to the marketing team, because it looked like they might almost make something awesome and funny in league with Guardians of the galaxy. The reviews seem to all say that the problems are almost exactly like BvS. That's a real shame in my opinion.

Well it's all about the drop off right? If it makes a lot of money in it's opening weekend, that's kind of thanks to marketing, but if it drops 60% in the second weekend than it's kind of seen as a failure ultimately because it means that word of mouth is bad. This was the same thing that killed Amazing Spider-man 2 cause the word of mouth was so bad that the movie, despite killing it in the opening weekend got terrible word of mouth and resulted in the scrapping of a lot of future plans. I think DC has sort of committed a lot to these movies, which means that if they don't get another hit eventually it could be really hard to keep this experiment going in it's current incarnation.

We'll have to wait on that one of course because it could very well be the case. However user reviews for the movie on Rottentomatoes and Metacritic (for what that's worth) have been good.

I actually loved that part. It really helps reinforce that Waller's perspective of the world, despite being ostensibly motivated by cold pragmatism, is fundamentally wrong, and ultimately self-defeating.
