Here's the challenge.
I have a really shitty laptop. Despite being relatively new (i'm going to say 18 month old design with some 2/2.5 year old tech in there as well), it is really really broken.
<spoiler=Here are some stats if you're interested>
Operating System
MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
CPU
AMD V140 57 °C
Champlain 45nm Technology
RAM
2.00 GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 533MHz (7-7-7-20)
Motherboard
Hewlett-Packard 1604 (Socket S1G4) runs at about-57 °C
Graphics
Generic PnP Monitor (1366x768@60Hz)
AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 (HP)
Hard Drives
313GB TOSHIBA TOSHIBA MK3265GSX SATA Disk Device (SATA)
Optical Drives
hp DVDRAM GT31L SATA CdRom Device
DTSoftBusCd00
<spoiler=Here are some things it does>
Crash utterly while using anything flash related (2 minutes of youtube usually does the trick.)
arbitrarily crash if left untouched for about 10 mins
random cpu and/or ram spikes
slow to crawl when browsing web only solution in hit ctrl-alt-delete, wait 4-5 mins for task manager, shut down browser, wait 2 mins for it to close
RANDOMLY DELETES SHORTCUTS FROM MY DESKTOP...HOW STUPID IS THAT? It's not even that damaging it's just a three second task to find the program and make a new shortcut...but what the hell?
When crashed the only procedure that seems to work is
Restart in safe mode (normal startup locks up between the windows logo and the login screen)
shut down
wait 5 mins for it to cool completely
start up
<spoiler=here are things I've tried to fix it>
removed/upgraded/replaced all the drivers
complete operating system replacement
killed all the bloatware with fire
Registry clean
I'm presuming it is something hardwarey ralated, I'm getting some new ram (jumping the dizzying heights of 6g) next week, might solve it
cooling might be the issue, but there seem to be no real temperature jumps before crashes
My challenge to you is...
Find me games that will work on it and are really, truly(madly, deeply) worth plugging some time into.
they can be retro of just low spec
<spoiler=Games I've played on it that work are>
Black and White
Quake ii
Diablo ii (i get stuck in loops of re-playing gaames for nostalgia's sake, sue me)
VVVVVV (yummy)
theme park world
Populous the gathering
Magic the beginning online
Cave Story (awesome-o)
gratuitus space battles, (pretty fun)
Core (platformy funness. it's a GM/yoyo game)
Pokemon online (YAY)
Prime ministers questions (hilarious)
Encarta (for when I have no internet....THE SHOULD TOTALLY MAKE A DOWNLOADABLE/UPDATEABLE OFFLINE VERSION OF WIKIPEDIA. I'm patenting this million dollar idea HANDS OFF)
<spoiler=Games I've played on it that DONT work are>
supermeat boy-too laggy, crashes
minecraft- unplayable due to lagg, much to my shegrin
Crysis 2(get it? It's funny because that's obviously a really high spec game)
driftmoon- playable but too laggy to be enjoyable
Cloud (one of my favourite little games, sadly to laggy and crashes)
Hammer Fight (crappy game anyway, Waste of a good premise- too sloooow on my comp)
pretty much any game made after 2005
TAKING SUGGESTIONS FOR GAMES.....NOW!
(I'm willing to pirate/emulate games that are no longer available any other ways otherwise I'm going to order them online or something)
The winner gets a Online Hug or Suggestive Pictures of Myself or Dinner With Me Voucher or some other thing they want
<spoiler=SUPER HARD BONUS ROUND>
-it you give me advice that helps me fix my computer to my satisfaction completely for free (I'm so so poor) I will send you (if you live in the UK)
