Hey y'all, I have never really played a 2D fighting game, but really want to get into the genre. SSFIV looks like a fantastic game, but I have some concerns:

Is it possible to enjoy the game using an Xbox 360 controller? I mean, chain some decent moves together. And how many people online use pads?

Is the fighter accessible to people who have never played the series? I mean, I'm willing to invest in the game to get better, but don't want to spend the first 30 hours honing my skills before I can beat someone online.

Would you recommend the PC or Xbox 360 version? I'd rather have it on the console, unless there are any flaws on the Xbox (such as bad connection), or massive advantages in owning it on the PC.

And finally, just to add some discussion value, what's your favourite character?

Thanks in advance.

It looks pretty awesome. SFIV was pretty dang fun. Only thing that could make SSFIV better was a character creator, something akin to Soul Calibur IV. That game is a real treat.
Meh, a character creator just doesn't fit with the Street Fighter universe.

It's awesome. My friend has the 360 version and says it can be a bit awkward. I've only played the PS3 version so I can't say. It's particularly hard to pick up, I mean my friend played it for the first time on Friday and whooped everyone's ass.

My favourite character has to be DeeJay.

1) pretty much everyone online uses arcade sticks as far as i know, and will generally rape you. there are more amazing people than noobs in this game. i get raped the whole time

2) yes it is, but some characters will be way out of reach for you. i reccomend that you work out your playstyle before you train yourself with one character. i beat some people online after 3 hrs of practice, but now that the game has been out for a while people might take longer than that to be able to win online.

3) get it for xbox unless you have a joystick for another system. joysticks will help you a lot.

my fave characters are hakan and dudley. hakan is great for punishing people who try and play the long range game with oil applied ex oil slide cause it goes strait under fireballsand will connect from full screen. also, he is a grappler who does massive damage at close and mid range. dudley has some brutal combos that if you get down will take out half of your opponents health and is a very aggressive character, doesnt have much by means of defensive moves though, so you just have to pressure your opponent as much as you can, but has a few techniques that will rushdown an opponent if they are zoning you. i personally cannot reccomend any defensive characters but i hear that chun li is good at the defensive game and wake up game, and so id reccomend her for playing defensively.

++ hit me up on live if you want a sparring partner if you do get it for xbox

Did they fix the balance issues in the game?
I'm not sure. I played with my main character, Sagat, and he still seems very powerful.
That'd be a 'no' then. I was considering getting this because the online system has been revamped to further separate ranked and player games, but if they haven't altered the character balance then it'll be a wafer-thin silver lining on a very dark cloud.

id say that its more balanced than before, sagat is still a top tier character, but isnt as gamebreaking as in sf4

Yeah I agree. I crippled my mates with 'SF4' Sagat, but the fight seemed fairer with 'SSF4' Sagat. Mind you they didn't know Sagat has his own version of Ryu's ultra Hadoken now, so they didn't that coming.

my friend plays her, a good character that is quite noob friendly, but does have enough potential to be a high tier character aswell.

Sigh. It was a very balanced game before SSF4 even came out. Did you know there was a Vega in SBO? (The most prestige fighting gaming tournament) Ya vega the worst of the arcade characters. Sagats been nerfed and the games balanced. You sound like you complained about sagat so i'll say this. Its a extremmly balanced game for good players. If your a bad player then its not balanced so dont get it...

Yeah. I'm doing fine with Juri.

You can't do 720s easily, but you're good for everything but tournament level play, really.

I just recently picked up this game on whim, plus the $40 price tag helped too. I've always been a spectator to the Street Fighter games, but never really much of a player except if I swung by the arcade.... which all have closed down around here years ago. Further, I'm definitely a hardcore fighter player, the last fighter game I bought being BlazBlue.... and before that Soul Calibur II (unless we're counting the Smash Bros games)... and before that Killer Instinct Gold waaay back on the N64. So yeah- quite a deficit there.

Still, I'm enjoying the game. Probably my fave character thus far has been Cammy, my old mainstay back when I played Super Street Fighter II at my friend's house. I tried out Juri, and she is appealing, but not quite as direct as I normally like to play. Given time though, we'll see.

I would like to recommend something a bit easier than SSFIV if you're a new player. It is accessable and some characters are easy to play, but eventually, most new players hit a ceiling early on that they can't seem to break through. I am speaking from my own experience and for many of my friends. So unless you plan to devote a lot of time to learning the ins and outs, I'd probably suggest picking up games such as BlazBlue, or Marvel vs. Capcom 3 when it's released. Those are 2D fighters that I have found many people get into much easier because they reward players in zany, over-the-top ways for little effort. They are still deep fighters, but offer up rewards more easily than say SSfIV, SFIV, or DOA

Putting aside your obvious fanboyism, I'll indulge a troll this once.

It is unbalanced. Sagat and the rest of the shotoclones (they all have the same moveset but with different names, same command inputs though) tended to have their moves given higher priority over other characters, Shoryuken in particular can pretty much get priority over everything. Spammable projectiles didn't help either. Fei Long has similar command inputs to the shotoclones, but his moves have severely reduced range and power compared to Ken/Ryu/Sagat/Akuma (Yes, I have tested this).

I'm also not only talking about the massive gap between character tiers, I'm talking about the number of different styles present in the game (Sagat/Ryu/Ken all do the same moves - imaginative, really, I'm not being totally sarcastic at all) and you could make a solid case for not enough variation when including Dan/Akuma/Gouken.

Street Fighter IV was released after Soul Calibur IV, a far superior fighting game, and took the players away from it, it then proceeded to do what SCIV never did: Get stale. SFIV had less characters yet felt the need to repeat fighting styles, whereas SCIV did not.

Also, do you think I care what characters were used in a fighting game tournament? I'm not talking about tournament level play, I'm talking about regular, un-ranked online play, which did not even give me a month or enjoyment compared to other games such as SCIV (which I would still play now if there were enough players about) and Blazblue, which is more interesting and more varied.

Street Fighter IV has and always will be selling on it's name rather than it's merits. It's an inferior fighting game compared to others out there, this is my opinion in the matter, the opinion of a casual fighting game player, not some tool who tries to seem knowledgeable by referencing some irrelevant competition that a casual gamer does not care about.

Have fun playing SSFIV monsieur fan-troll, I'll not be joining you, or visiting this thread again, so feel free to flame me all you wish , I know you want to.
