I literally just watched this movie about 4 hours ago. My roommate picked it up at Walmart randomly because it had Rainn Wilson in it. And I have to say, it was a very interesting movie. I had never heard of it at all until seeing it on the shelf. It reminded me a lot of Kick Ass in both premise and tone.
Since I had already seen Kick Ass, I think I was a little more prepared for this movie's mix of comedy and dark tone. It very easily shifted tones throughout the movie and even blended them together at certain times.
I think this movie was a little more realistic that Kick Ass and from what I remember of it, a little more bloody. That was one thing that did surprise me was the amount of blood. It was just everywhere...
I really liked Rainn's and Ellen's characters throughout the whole movie. The way Rainn took some joy out of beating the shit out of criminals, especially after the way he was treated early in his life, made it seem more real. And the times when he was conflicted about things really showed on his face. And Ellen Page does a TERRIFIC job as the fangirl/sidekick. I'm a tad bit frighted of her now, because if she can act that crazy, whoa. But the whole situation was like a dream come true for her character and she played it perfectly the way I think a fangirl who gets to live their dream would - enthusiastic to the point of crazy. And I love how random she is throughout the movie. Kept me on my toes and definitely provided some laughs.
Overall, a pretty damn good dark comedy. I'm definitely glad that I saw it.
