So this was brought up in the Avatar rating thread, and I figured it was an interesting enough topic.

Which would be better? The gorgeous air-head or the okay-looking intellect? Which would you go for? Note, this applies to either gender.

I'd always go for the mind. Aside from the fact that the people I find really attractive have both good features, I find myself so utterly repulsed by someone who can't string two words together. Sure, admiring the aesthetics of someone's physique will get them so far, if I can't sit down and have an animated conversation with them, nothing is ever going to happen. There must be personality behind a face for it to do anything for me.

Haha airheads are so funny to watch.. But I wouldnt date one

Now that I think about it.. One day im just gonna go for the hottest, airheadest chick in the bar, blind her with my amazing knowledge of the arts and see how far I go...

EDIT: Now that I think about it EVEN HARDER - Someone who makes me happy > all..

If someone cant count to 100 but theres somthing about that makes me happy then yeah.. But in the context of the thread Mind < Body

Well what do you mean "better"? If I was just looking for sex, I would sort of obviously go for the hot one. But if I was looking for a long or longer-term relationship, I would definetly go for the smart person. Would definetly make things easier in the long run, plus I would feel horrible about myself being with someone just because they were hot.

I'll take an okay looking intellect over an air headed beauty any day. Hell, I'd take a less than okay looking intellect over an air headed beauty. Stupidity annoys me to no end, and no matter how good looking a person is it won't make up for that in my eyes.

I need someone I can have a conversation with about things other than her clothes, what she bought at the mall today, and why her friends are all sluts and bitches (Never understood why certain females like to talk so much shit about the people they deem their 'friends', and I'm not going to try to). I also can't stand closed mindedness, so I could never be with someone who doesn't like being disagreed with, because I have strong opinions and have no problems sharing them with anyone, anyplace and anytime. Even if it caused violence toward me, which it often has.

So yeah, in short, looks don't really matter all that much to me. They don't at all really.

I don't like this division. Nobody's an airhead for their entire day, and there are plenty of "intellectual" people that are absolutely jaw-dropping. I'd go for one of them.

This is true, and acknowledged in the OP, but in a pinch..?

Unfortunately given that i am someone who gets along very easily with most everyone i meet, i have a tendency to favor the beautiful over the gifted when it comes to attempting to woo the fairer sex.

Attempted is the key word, they also have the opportunity to pursue the better looking of my sex... of which i would venture there are many.

Its not like that person becomes my entire world of culture, i can still talk meaningfully with the artist and have a developed social network. People confuse choosing an airhead and abandoning wit and intelligence. i Can still have friends and coworkers who share with me all of those pursuits and endeavors.

Im not shallow, i'm indifferent. I regret nothing.

Well since I consider myself somewhere between okay-looking and good looking (it depends on the day =/ ), it would be a rather odd thing to only like really attractive people. I need to have good conversations with who I'm in a relationship with, so if he's just some idiot that has a pretty face I won't even consider him. He can continue sitting on the other side of my class not talking to me.

Now a good looking intellectual? I think we're all on the same page there. ;)

Between those two, I'd date the intellectual; if it was just a one-night sort of thing, I'd go for whoever seemed like more fun.

The question is superficiality, and I don't believe any preference is inherently superficial. I honestly hate people who claim to possess more integrity because they're dating someone who speaks another language or is really good at math. If it's about sex, I'm going after the experienced chick with the nice ass over the girl who will talk about French philosophy as we cuddle.

Is all about the spark of interest. With it, you can build families. Without, you might as well be trying to start a fire with beetles.

I thought the exact same thing after I made that post. Ah well... so at least everyone knows what I like: experienced French philosophy chicks with a nice ass.

Well considering that people most often develop chemistry with partners that are similar to them psychological-wise, and this is the Escapist forum, I estimate the majority here want intellect to be sitting upstair pulling the levers, on a good looking body however.

Ugly people, no matter how smart, are still ugly. No body likes to look at ugly people. I don't even like to look at decent people. No sir, it's only the beautiful people for me. God hates ugly people, that's my motto.
What he said. :-D

Seriously though, I find myself in agreement with most of the posters here. I have to be able to connect with a lady on a personal level, if that doesn't happen it doesn't matter how pretty they are, they won't look as pretty to me.

Conversely, if I meet a girl that I find rather homely, but we connect on that level, they will start to look more beautiful in my eyes. That's exactly what happened with my most recent ex, she wasn't much of a looker, but won me over and to this day I do not regret dating her. Actually, it was one of the best experiences of my life.

If I'm looking for a quick lay, then of course, we don't necessarily need to vibe, but in a girlfriend/wife, it is a must. Besides, good looks only last so long. :)

I'd go with the okay-looking intellect, because they'd be a lot more fun to be around.

For me, it has to be personality over looks, because I'm too damn irritable and when someone can't keep up with me in a conversation, it just makes me want to bite them, if only to hold the boredom at bay.

Also, I find a person who is conventionally beautiful a little boring to look at (a human toothpaste ad), and a person who is unconventionally beautiful to be rather intimidating.

Someone who makes me happy > all..
This. Who cares if she's a gorgeous and has an IQ over 140 and has a degree in world history, a doctorate in astrophysics, and a globally recognised award for "best sex in the world" when she's also an elitist ***** who thinks videogames are for children and treats me like dirt? Between the pretty airhead and the not-bad looking smart girl, I'll go with the one who I enjoy being around. To say that hot but simple people are never going to give you interesting conversation is also pretty superficial.
