Ok so, for those of you who saw the Supergirl pilot, what did you think? I know from the extended trailer we saw on this site, there were....varying opinions about it, to put it lightly.

Now that the episode is actually out, was it good? Did it still suck? Did it still pay lip service to the idea of empowering women, while sticking to all the classic female stereotypes and tropes in entertainment?

Thoughts? I personally haven't seen it (because I thought it looked pretty awful), but I'm curious what others might think.

Meh.

My GF and I both are really into the current crop of Superhero shows, and its... ok. We're going to keep watching it some more to see if it improves, but currently ranked on the bottom of my list. My GF said it felt a bit immature, and we're going to watch it with our kids (as opposed to Daredevil, which they can't watch ;) )

They did beat the "but your just a girl" into the ground a few too many times. I mean seriously, that would happen like once, then she would break a tank in half, then everyone would be like, "OK! Moving on!"

I haven't seen it yet, but once it shows up on Swedish TV I'll give it a look.

Yeah, the "you're just a girl!" aspect was what seemed the most annoying to me. It reeked of playing that card to death from what I saw. Sad to hear it actually ended up doing exactly that. Reminds me of the female Thor comics, that played that same freaking card to death. Le sigh.

For a pilot it was really desperate. Way too much stuff going on, setting up a back story, a bitchy boss, work colleagues including Jimmy Olson for some reason, family members, a secret military organisation that Supergirl has to work for because she can't think for herself and a space prison full of super powered bad guys! And they keep going on about Superman like he's the second coming of Jesus Christ. You can hear the capital H whenever they talk about Him.

On the other hand Michelle Benoist seemed charismatic and the scene where Supergirl saves the jet was pretty cool. So it might get better.

I will give it that I thought the action was pretty decent. The fight between Vartox and SG at the plant had the impact expected of two Kryptonian level folks fighting without being OTT/Man of Steel level destruction, and the plane save was good.

It's not the worst opening episode ever, but it is definitely seems to be on the lower end of quality for the current era of comic based television if it doesn't change dramatically at some point.

That is a shame, but it is not like I did not see it coming which is why I have skipped it so far. I mean one of the tag lines was "What will this be like for a generation with no female superheroes?" and I was wondering what generation that could be other than perhaps my grandfather's.

There are a few missing qualifiers before that tagline makes sense:
...female lead star...
...on thier own TV show...
...costumed superhero...

...but yeah, that tagline stretches more than Mr. Fantastic.

Ahh mine may have been cut due to Twitter being Twitter. Also, if you cut only the second of those three we are back to square Sarkeesian... I mean one.

I thought it was alright. It's no Flash or Arrow quite yet, but fun enough that I'll keep watching.

Dean Cain being in it was a nice nod.

Well, going off the trailers for the next movie, people are pretty much supposed to be going on about him as if he's the second coming. That or they're just weirdly intolerant.
It's not in the same universe as the movies, in fact it may not even be in the same universe as the Arrowverse series (they've talked about a possible crossover, but nothing is set in stone since it's on a different network).

Even then, you have to forget Birds of Prey (granted no one wants to remember Birds of Prey). I'll forgive a lack of acknowledging Painkiller Jane or Witchblade as they're probably also talking family friendly.

OT, I tend to grade origins on a curve, so i'm going to say it was alright. It's covering the basics of an old origin and old set of tropes, and if Kara can get it together enough to quit being such a ditz, it could actually be good. I'm even forgiving on the "girl power" lines in their overuse as after Agent Carter, I have a greater tolerance. I even got a sense of some pushback against the identity politics / diversity crowd

1) Cat Grant's speech from the trailer, while a bit cringe worthy was still a smack to those that want to assign labels instead of letting your actions and deeds speak for you.

2) The fact she was going to fire Kara right there until saved by Jimmy stands to me as a statement that there is a proper time, place, and method for criticizing others (especially those in authority) if you wish to be listened to and not piss them off.

3) Henshaw telling Alex she only got the job at the DEO due to her relationship with Kara, but it was her ability that kept er the job as a nice statement that a push for diversity is only supposed to open doors, not guarantee a job.

So, yeah, I'll keep up with this for now.

Well I like the super hero fighting parts, but that is only about 10% of the show. The rest is nonsensical city girl drama, and the writing is truly dogshit, I haven't seen stuff like that outside fan fiction.

It was pure, 1000% meh.

Other than the "omg it's a girl, so empowering right now" the show doesn't stand out in any notable way. It's pretty much Heroes Reborn v2(the only good thing there was Zachary Levi, and the only good thing here was Dean Cain).

The current deck for Supergirl consists of only 1 card, and it's already old. I would say it might improve, but I really don't think so. This show was created with "omg, it's superman, but it's a girl!" as the motivation, and I don't think the writers have spent more than 2 minutes thinking beyond that.

It reeks of a corporation's attempt to appeal to the progressive niche in the most aggressive way possible.

It would be better if it was about a superhero that happens to be a girl rather than a girl that happens to be a superhero.

I got nothing but The Devil Wears Prada vibes from it.
