Since Movie Bob talked about the Avengers in this weeks video I kinda thought I'd make this post about a thing that kinda bothers me in movie adaptations of superheroes:

Their costumes, or lack there of.

You wouldn't make a Batman movie without a take on the iconic Batman suit.
You wouldn't make Superman movie without the iconic Blue and Red With the big yellow S.

I could make that list a mile long, but here is where my problems come in.

Why is it that some movies seems to disregard the origins of the characters suits?

Looking at all the X-men movies and only three characters, that I can remember actually had a suit that was sort of like their comic character (Cyclops, Storm and Magneto). But yet Wolverine is the most wellknown X-man/Mutant of all the characters, and he gets nothing.

Isn't Wolverines costume as iconic as Spider-Mans costume?

What I want to discuss is when is it okey to disregard the costume? And what heroes do you, or don't you want to see in an adaptation of their original costumes?

Wolverine's costume is iconic as Spider-Man's but that's most because it's the icon of all retarded costumes. It wasn't that great, and he's as well known for his weird hairstyle as his costume. Oh, and the CLAWS.

Quite frankly, it's kind of tough to have a real person look cool in Wolverine's comic costume. Seriously.

Also, I'm fine with whatever people do to costumes as long as it looks cool. That's what they're there for in the first place!

You mean his Yellow and brown suit or his Yellow and Blue suit? The Yellow/Blue was part of the original teams uniform, which, in the movies was black for the whole team so that wasn't going to happen. The Brown one would have been nice, but he wasn't solo hero-ing enough for him to use the costume if he had it at all.

Why do some have nipples? Why?

Also take a look at these Costume Fails;

I just think it's difficult to take a comic book and adapt it to the movie screen. They are different mediums and therefore it's hard to translate one into the other.

Like books being made into films - the movie can only ever be an adaptation based on it.

Because of that I see costumes as adaptations of the superhero costumes. I'm sure most people would love to be able to replicate the costumes as they are in the comics. But they have to factor in budget constraints and the natural forces of reality which simply might not allow for some things, or just look plain weird in the real world.

Hugh Jackman...In yellow spandex..

Please.. Never Ever.

Not all costumes should stay the same, the Flash and Captain America, would look ridiculous in modern films.

Well both look more or less the same, and well these days its Daken tat runs around in the Yellow/brown one.

As for looking cool, have you guys seen Wolveriens X-Force Costume, Black and gray with red eye?

I used Wolverine as an example, but what about the rest of the X-men? Didn't they even put pink in Kittys Costume?

Lets look at some characters that havent made it to the big screen yet:

Hawkeye. This dude takes the gold when it comes to corny costumes. Which is why he looks totally different in Ultimate comics. But I must say I don't care much for the not-superhero-looking-at-all look they gave him. So how do you work with a guy like this?

Ms. Marvel. Her costume isn't corny, but it is a leather swimsuit... would any actor wear it? Or would the studio go and change the look? or even worse go for the armored Warbird look?

My point is that it seems that a lot of costumes get disregarded, because they are a little "unworkable", but is this the right thing to do if you want to keep with the comics?

Depends on the superhero. Someone like Wolverine would never be able to be taken seriously in their original costume, while characters like Spiderman and Superman would. Although, I certainly wouldn't mind them changing the Superman costume if they made another movie. It may just be me, but if I saw a super-powered hero saving the day in that thing, I'd freaking laugh.

I think it's perfectly acceptable for a big screen movie. When you have a well known superhero, it's very likely they don't change or completely remove a costume lightly. I imagine they go through many concepts to find a way to adapt an iconic costume and if that fails, find another way. I don't think Wolverine's costume would work on screen, it totally doesn't fit the way they presented Wolverine in the movies.

Yeah, like a tuxedo... you can't tell me he would go to a wedding without a tuxedo! Now all we need is a wedding situation. What about Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver?

Well, Wolverine has other defining features (claws, hair) and he had a silly outfit so they deemed it ok to change it and keep him recognisable. Besides, Spiderman's outfit suits him, I mean, with all the acrobatics and stuff, things would get in the way.

The point is, some costumes are just silly and unworkable, so actors and directors would much rather have something else if they can get away with it.

Why would he be angry at a wedding?

Doctor Horrible could probably go without it, as long as he sang a few songs and confirmed that he was, in fact, Doctor Horrible.

There aren't enough songs about freeze rays nowadays.

Well, then he would have to have been fitted for his tuxedo when he was in Hulk-form, which wouldn't work. And he would have to be in Hulk form throughout the entire wedding, which seems unlikely.

Am I thinking too much about this?

Two very good examples. Both have defining costumes IMO, but I bet both would have gotten changed.

That said, it depends on what movie they would be introduced in. If it was in the avengers, I think their costumes would have been adaptation of their real costumes, but an X-men move would not have. (Hell no mutants in the X-men movies have their costumes...)

Scarlet Witch's costume isn't that bad, depending on year and artist. Red Pants and top, with a red cape and the tiara thingy it could work on the big screen

I immagine him with a Rubik's Cube, desperately trying to solve it. I get pretty angry about one when not being able to solve it after a time, so it's plausible.
And no, you don't think too much about it. You just think more about problems than solutions.
