This guy, for instance, takes the tired and true argument of "I laugh derisively at your statement, because anything else would require me to elaborate, upon which I would only go into an emotional tizzy and make a fool of myself. Conversation frightens me."
As with America-hating Euros, this is tolerated and even encouraged at The Escapist, because every opinion is valid and everyone deserves a trophy. Else someone's feelings might get hurt.
Knowing a little bit about some of the more common personality traits in so-called "right-wing authoritarians" which are the target audience of conservative talk shows etc., the basis for the dismissal isn't an unwillingness to elaborate.

More than anything else it's because the speaker being mocked is not a member of the in-group of the person doing the mocking. People of that personality type are extremely ethnocentric, they absolutely hate anyone and everyone who is not very similar to them, and anyone who isn't a member of the same cliques. To them, simply being an outsider makes you wrong about everything, and a lower class of animal than they are. So, naturally, of course you're wrong when you disagree with them. You're a stupid one of (group x) to them.

Now, this is a very broad generalization and describes the group as a whole rather than individual members. Normally, it's not fair to project the trends of a group as a whole onto individual members, but applying it to an individual seems appropriate enough when they've gone to such lengths to be condescending in ways that fit the pattern.

Im with the "haters" on this one. An American citizen is perfectly capable of protecting people all over the world. Same with a Brittish, French, Russian, Chinese, Bolgarian citizen. A citizenship doesnt mean you can ONLY aid fellow citizens from your country. Its simply a statement of homeland and a stake in whatever country's political process and government programs. People dont RENOUNCE their citizenship when they start taking on a more global stance. They may get dual or more citizenship, but to denounce a citizenship is usually done for political reasons in order to disassociate and object to whatever country youre denouncing. As such this turn of events is a blatant example of this writer pushing his politics in a way that seems out of character for Superman. Lastly, hate to burst the bubble of the posters who were complaining about how the previous administration had trampled all these freedoms, but I have to point out that Obama removed the sunset on the Patriot Act, changing it from a temporary war power into a permanent government power. The Dems have done other things as well such as proposed internet regulations and the like, but the Pat. Act is the most blatant example. Dont be political hacks.

Ok, here's my response from my id, ego, and superego:

id: Oh, so Supes decides to renounce his citizenship to the greatest nation in the world? He's probably gonna high-tail it to Canada, that daft-dodging, acid-droping, liberal hippie pussy!

ego: This is a clear and present criticism of our nation's asinine immigration policy! By denouncing his public persona as a US Citizen, he is protesting immigration politics that demonizes innocent immigrants and allows drug dealers do hop over the border with immunity!

Superego: "Truth and Justice" are not exclusive to just us. "The American Way" is to vague and in that vagueness, it allows abuse for people to misconstrue his actions as strictly US policy and gives leeway for the gov't to use him for unscrupulous actions. The talking heads, bigots, and jingos can cry all they want; the ethics and freedoms Superman fights, advocates, and represents for belong to everyone, not just us.

Ok, that's pretty much it.

EDIT: yeah, I posted it without finishing it. Hope I don't get mis-quoted...

Wait a second here....

Do people seriously care this much about a comic character?! Are you freakin' kidding me?

I don't mean to be impolite, but if you choose to ignore at least one real event that probably killed or made homeless, in favor of being upset that a character from a comic book doesn't like your country anymore... I'm just going to call you a fcking idiot.

I would love to see the country that has done more for the world as a whole, good bad or otherwise over the entirety of its existence. [SNIP]
America as a nation of citizens, as a collective idea of freedom has done more for the world in 200 years than most cultures have done in the past 1000.
now, now, let's not get hasty here. not taking away anything that the US has indeed contributed to the world, let's just say England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Greece for the arts and sciences alone (although we could add philosophy and lots of technology too), and we mustn't forget China for gunpowder and the Arab world for, oh nothing, just algebra, algorithms and the numbering system we use. And the violin, if you look into where the Italians got the idea. And yes, most of these ideas were meant to be shared with the world, or at least as many people as possible.

also, the very idea of freedom as implemented in the early US owes quite a lot to the French Revolution and to german Protestantism before that.

so yeah, I'm with you but whoa nelly not so fast.

To me it sounds, in terms of plot, that Superman essentially got sick of being the good guy all the time and America leaping up and yelling internationally 'Yeah! He's one of ours! don't forget to thank us for the help!' (Remember this is FICTION, I'm not attacking the US).

If I was in Superman's situation I'd want to reposition myself as a force for good for the world, too, not as some token for the US media and politicians to score points with.

As for the comments section, I can't remember who said it, might have been Charlie Brooker, but it went along the lines of 'There needs to be a warning on any site with a forum, comments section or the like, just a big black line and big letters stating...

WARNING - WHIRLING VORTEX OF NONSENSICAL HATE BELOW

That way people might turn away before finding out that the video of two kittens playing has started a flame war between gays and gaybashers, athiests and everyone, the UK and the US, 360 gamers and PS3 gamers, and just about everyone else.... at once!

Oh please. Now these idiots realize the comic book industry is liberal? That's almost like coming to the epiphany that Stephen Colbert, is in fact, not on Bill O'Reilly's side.

""This is why I don't go to movies or even rent anymore. I'm not making the left loons of Hollywood any richer to support their campaign of American hate," added another."

See how this person does not write "I Don't WATCH anymore movies (by those "Hollywood leftist loons"."... So I'm pretty sure they are justifying to themselves their pirating those movies.
After all, you don't want to help out the studios because they are 'left', whatever that means anyway! Furthermore, by not going to theaters you are robbing the theater owner of their money and American dream! You Commie! ;)

Also, yay Fox, you wrote something without hysteria, fear mongering and half truths skewed extremely to your favor!! Keep on going and in a few years I might actually start calling you a news station instead of a bunch of paranoid political extremists who don't even recognise that core fact themselves. :D

I just want to add a little comment to all the people hating on Fox News:

I live in Sweden, where the most whackjob far-right party would still be considered stalinist, communist madmen in USA and the left wing parties (just imagine how left they are) have basically complete control over all mainstream media. Imagine having 5-6 different brands of Fox News as the only news-source, including newspapers, except that instead of far-right theyre far-left, and is just as critical of the possible complications assosciated with multiculturalism as Fox News is of christians and conservatives.

To put it into context; this comment would have been censored for racism before even getting published if i had posted it on any 'news' site in Sweden (can you spot why?). Yes, they screen comments for dissenting viewpoints.

If you consider yourself a liberal and you think that sounds good, you are one of those people who remind me of the saying "A liberal is someone who thinks everyone should be allowed to express any opinion, but are then shocked and terrified to find that there are opinions other than his or her own."

Bottom line: be glad that you have Fox News, even though they are lying cheating pricks at least they aren't really trying to hide it. It's always better to let both sides speak, 'cause that leads to discussion and discussion is always a good thing.
