It'd be only a matter of time until this happens:

Everyone knows absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I'm surprised that angle [of a cult of Superman] has never be explored.
It has. They stood vigil outside his tomb and started riots over ideology in the Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen story arc.
i think most religions would cry superman is a false god or the work of satan but i could see the Church of Superman springing up.

Well I'm sure plenty of countries would be afraid to go to war, with america at least.

Overall If he is the Moral beacon of hope that he is then yea, he would be a good thing.

Give a regular guy like me those powers and I'd do a fuck tonne of murdering though!
As for being afraid to go to war i never really see Superman as Mr America home of the brave and land of the free. I think he is more a entire world kind of guy, I can't really see him becoming a Dr Manhattan type of character being used as a weapon for a country.
Dude. Truth, Justice, and the American Way?

Yes thats the Superman Motto but from my limited reading's and viewing of Superman he treats himself as more of a peace ambassador to all nations and also he does denounce his citizenship to America at one point in the comic's

This is gonna sound a bit misanthropic but I don't think we really deserve a Superman; we'd take a gift like him and abuse his generosity/power like a superhuman Giving Tree. The sad part is he'd take it too :(

That wasn't the original phrase. It was "Yes, it?s Superman?strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. Superman?defender of law and order, champion of equal rights, valiant, courageous fighter against the forces of hate and prejudice, who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for truth and justice." 'and the American way' got added in 1942 to add support for World War 2, and as soon as the war ended, 'and the American way' was dropped completely. But the TV series that came sometime after that picked it up, and that's how it became 'iconic'.

Besides, Superman revoked his American citizenship a few years ago to be a 'citizen of the world' or whatever.

If I had superman's powers I wouldn't tell anyone, or at least avoid the media from knowing that I exist.

I will start by:
Taking a shit on Mitt Romney's front door and then flying away :)

Superman specifically goes out of his way to not solve every problem on Earth, so people don't start worshiping him as a god and relying on him to do everything for them. I imagine he'll only truly get involved in matters if his loved ones are involved, if a potentially catastrophic war began, or if super villains started popping up.

Other than that, we're on our own.

One think I find weird is how "high moral superheroes" always lick Uncle Sam's boots.
They can see and hear different tragedies and problems of humans, but they prefer "the American way".
Let's skip city heroes like Batman and Spider-Man.
But international heroes that can travel around the world, should also help other countries as well.
Yes I know comic publishers are mostly Americans, and sell to US, but they also need to think outside of the box.

I would disagree with that in some sense i think Superman would move in disaster situations like big building fires and such maybe not so much petty crime.

But with all this i could also see some idiot trying to sue Superman for not saving his life or something. also and i know its kind of hypocritical of me to say but isnt it in the Bill or Rights or American Constitution (Australian born and raised here) that those with the power to do things have the responsibility to do them ?

Time travel obviously...

Because that's totally how it works...<.<
Actually, if superman somehow flew fast enough to go back in time himself, (and you ignore a bunch of reasonable conjecture) then, from the perspective of superman, the earth would rotate in the opposite direction. Thus, his direction of travel was irrelevant and he did not reverse the rotation of the earth which then turned back time but rather he flew so fast he went back in time and demonstrating that to the audience simply shows the earth's rotation slow and then reverse as we're watching the sequence from superman's perspective on time.

Hard to say.

For one thing, there will be paranoid people coming up with theories on why he is a threat while there will be others that will adore him.
I don't think Superman will confine to the US only as he will be helping and saving other on a global scale and the other nations would hate the idea of him being on US soil only.

I think the important factor is can Superman ideals and morality can hold up against the realism of reality? Would he stay incorruptible and true or would he start to worn down over time?

All this talk of using Super man as a battery...isn't that morally wrong or something?
Is it morally right of Superman to let people live in squalor and the environment be destroyed and the world plunged into wars over energy source if he can stop it by becoming a human battery?
