ok I was watching some old MovieBob videos and on one of them he said how US is represented mainly by macho, one dimensional, space marines and sports players while japan was represented by everything so I was wondering what are some other NON-SPACE MARINE characters can you think of that can represent western games
EDIT mass effect can count as a non space marine

Gordon Freeman? I mean, technically he's not a space marine, but he's got power armour. He's not exactly macho either, I mean, the guy looks like my high school science teacher.

I would go with Ezio/Altair, although you could consider them macho, they aren't space marines at least, but cool assassins.

Gangsters. Americans are either marines or Gangsters.

I suppose I don't mind as long as my purple feathered hat is in the mail.

I'd say Raz from Psychonaughts Eddie Riggs from Brutal Legend (both made by Tim Shafer... I know) Jack from Bioshock, and Ratchet from Insomniac games, it's a western company that works for a Japanese developer.

........Mario? no.... Well your character from Fable. That passive faced *****.
That turns into a really creepy looking body-builder you wouldn't leave your kids with, even if he was your best friend.

Exactly. How does he have friends I thought he killed them all.

Well I think, I think it's because he farts and dances...but I'm almost certain you don't do that in real-life, if you do then I've been doing a lot wrong for a very long time

QFT.

I think that American characters are underappreciated in games. Personally, I love my armored space marines (see Mass Effect).

This would be easier to answer if I knew off the top of my head which games were made by which designers.

Can I just say 'every character from Mass Effect 1/2'? Because, while they COULD be space-marines form a certain point-of-view, they are all well written, deep, emotional and (for the most part) devoid of terrible cliche.

Seriously; Garrus, Wrex, Ashley and Kaiden are the 'macho'-est characters in the game (excluding some Shepard's, I suppose), and NONE of them are flat, boring charac- fuck you Kaiden.

Okay, Kaiden is pretty lame. But even Ashley is well-written, she's just not as interesting as the other characters.

An in ME2 you have Grunt, Garrus (again), Samara, Jacob, Jack, Legion and Zaeed are the macho's of ME2, and only Jacob is uninteresting and Zaeed, being a DLC character, lacks some of the plot-involved depth of the other characters.

I guess the stock Bioware character set is an example of good western characters.

The Bioshock characters are all good.

My problem with MovieBobs comparison is this; the only western characters he shows are FPS characters (and a sports game), but then shows Japanese characters from every genre out there.

What about Tim (Braid); good depth for a platform-puzzle game.

The Prince (Prince of Persia); same.

Planescape Torment. Beyond Good and Evil. I could go on, but there are a LOT of good, original characters out there in western gaming. The biggest problem is that most of the best characters are difficult to nail down, thanks to the western focus on player control over their characters.

I'd take that over some shaved bear in sweaty armor.

OT: Leon from RE4... and that's all I got right now.

Half-life 2
Red Dead
Mw2
Bad Company 2
Fallout
Oblivion
L4D
Counter-strike
Team fortress

The only one I CAN think of with space marines is Halo.

I agree completely, except while Sheperd is just an exceptionally well written space marine, in the end he's a space marine. Look at different genres and you have the cast of TF2: probably the most fun set of characters out there, Starcraft: which includes space marines but also a large variety of interesting and deep characters, COD: which is just standard marines, Portal for your robo-guinea pig action, and many more. And what's more, we feature many artistic styles and not just prepubescent lady boys with swords bigger than a car or stupidly overdone over the top anime. Overall we've got a better deal on character, story and variety which is starting to show if you look at the top selling games of the last few years. Western games are on the rise and Japanese games are declining for the first time in history.

Also, Kaiden really does suck.
