This shouldn't fall under the first amendment at all, because I'm pretty sure calling a soldier and murderer at his funeral is slander and it DEFINITELY falls under fighting words, neither of which are protected by free speech.

Not enough people look at this from the Supreme Court's side.

As soon as the supreme court agrees that it's legal to write laws saying when or where people cannot protest, there's no telling what someone could apply that legal precedent to and get away with.

The supreme court's decisions carry too much weight. They can't say "No, westboro baptist church specifically can't protest specifically at soldiers' funerals." Ruling against them says "Yes, we can legally decide who can protest and where they can protest at."

While I understand the whole sentiment of "I don't agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it" with the Westboro church, I personally thing that what they do goes to far. As far as I'm concerned, what they do out there is hate-speech, and that should not be tolerated on any level.

You're allowed to have differing opinions, fine, I perfectly understand that. But for their god's sake, have the humanity to keep it to yourself for a grieving family.

I hate the idea of doing unto them and all that, but I do think there's going to be the biggest gayest Mardi Gras style carnival on the day of Phelps's funeral, and just maybe they'll finally understand, although I'm not sure any of his family love him, I think it's a cult of fear with a blood link is all.

Some of his family have left however, realising what a truly insane fucknugget he is, and maybe a few more will leave when they finally experience others celebrating his death and protesting his funeral, realising what they've done to hundreds of other people.

BTW, I use 'insane' as in 'completely detached from human emotion' , I totally understand he's fully understanding how to use 'God' to incite reasons to sue people, and that's the main reason they exist.

After all, if they were such an army of God's will, wouldn't they go after Muslim extremists? Now I don't want that to happen, but I do know they wouldn't take any shit or worry about law, they'd just walk into that place and wallpaper the whole church with Phelps.

Note I said extremists, I know the vast majority of muslims are just average guys, same as the majority of christians and atheists. It's the nutters who cause the bad press for any group.

freedom of speech is one thing, but common sense should be applied, and personally if I had a fallen family member and they showed up, well its gonna end up on CNN for sure. These people should also be told our soldiers died to give them freedom of speech and our way of life. Although i don't condone the current war but that was Bushes fault not Obama's.
