Also, as much as I loved Ashley, Wrex, Garrus, Tali, Liara and to a lesser extent Kaidan.... in Mass Effect I found that I could rarely rely on their actual AI's for any assistance in combat and so rather than pick who had the better abilities I found myself just picking the ones I liked most as characters for each mission.
Naturally this meant Ashley and Wrex were with me for like, half the game.

I'd throw Zevram in there from DA:O. Maybe others had some use for him, but I never used him once in the entire play through.

So I'm replaying Chrono Trigger for the umpteen quingigillionth time, trying to maximize characters other than Crono, Robo, and Ayla, and I've realized that Magus is surprisingly useless. He's a one-trick pony. He blasts magic, and that's it. Luminaire is better than Dark Matter, and Lucca's Flare seems equivalent. Robo's Shock may be equivalent, but doesn't need to be, since Robo can heal and do decent damage to a single opponent. Then there's the fact that he was far more badass long before joining your crew.

So, the question is, what other characters were supposed to be awesome, but were, in truth, the weakest character in the game?
He's good when you're facing an enemy that can change his weakness, but yeah, that's pretty much it.
What else aside from Magus changed its weakness?
I seem to remember the golem sisters doing it.
All Golems were fought before you could get Magus, and the Lavos version of Magus is much easier than the genuine article, with or without Magus.

Goofy in Kingdom Hearts. at least I could turn him into a second keyblade in Kingdom Hearts II, I guess that made him a little useful.
Hmmmm, I ended up overusing the Whirli-Goof Limit bcause it was completely overpowered. Very useful with certain bosses, I actually missed using it when it was just Riku and Sora against Xemnas in the final battles. Goofy is far from useless, in fact, I'd go so far as to say every single character aside from forced companions and Goofy and Donald are useless, since I never bother to use them (though I'll admit when I first have new party members I empty their inventory and steal all their stuff for myself ;D). I always stick with the main Trinity :D

Well, it HAS been a while since I played it.

Dual classed characters in anything D&D related. You're way better playing an all or nothing, which is no prob for me because I'm always the fighter.
Wait. What? That's... Um... Not true? Assuming you're discounting prestige classes, throwing in a couple levels of something doesn't diminish your abilities by much, but usually adds a nice layer of adaptability. Unless you're a caster who's delaying their spell progression.

I AGREE!
Also throw in everyone else from Final Fantasy VII except Zack. He was a one man army. The rest were useless fools.

Barney Calhoun.
All you like him for is his devilishly good looks and fun voice.

Anyone on an escort quest, Dana Mercer (Prototype), Barbara Gordon (Arkham Asylum), Alyx Vance (uselessness multiplied by the fact that she keeps making me think about it), UNSC Marines (Halo). Why's it always the female second? I'm starting to think the gaming industry is sexist.

I would say Tails, but he is good in boss fights (Except when he causes you to die, like during the Sonic 2 Chemical Plant zone boss his hit makes you pass through Robotnik (NOT EGGMAN!!!!) and fall into the death trap). Other than that, his only purpose is to get left behind and to be a subject of amusement when he gets himself killed.

I can't say enough awful things about this character. Boomer was the other squad mate you had (of two groups, one AI controlled) In the original Socom: Navy Seals and omg was he retardedly useless. He'd either blow my cover, walk in front of me while I was sniping or otherwise do something else completely useless. I reached a point where I just executed him at the beginning of every stage.

I was never a fanboy, I hated FFVII and everything about it (except Zack, Crisis Core was pretty good.) I get flamed for it though.

I don't over-exaggerate to the quingigillionth for my health here.

OT: I am asking for SURPRISINGLY useless characters. FF XII characters don't really count, since XII generalized to the power of blarg.

Magus was my immediate thought when I opened this thread, so I have to scramble for something even remotely comparable to his uselessness, particularly compared to how powerful he was when you had to fight AGAINST him.

Ms. Mowz and Bobbery from the Thousand Year Door are pretty useless. And I almost never took Sypha in Castlevania 3.

He beat me to it...though I hate/never played that game, I seen better characters in that game then her in other FF's. Though Yuna comes to mind as a useless character...and Colette...and Maya(Legaia 2)...wow...I hate a lot of female characters in RPGS.

Well, I don't know about "useless", but honestly I never found a use for mages in Disgaea series. All my friends insist they are over powered, and show me the massive dmg they do in one hit. Then, I show them a combo with characters that does triple the dmg.
The only "useless" characters I know, are those minions you get in "The Darkness". Sure, they're funny, and can sometimes be great distractions, but they've caused far more problems for me then was worth it.
