I am currently reading The Jungle and as a part of a paper which is worth a lot of my grade I have to do an editorial. I joined another two people who are doing there paper about cliques and I figured that a good way to get some good info would be using the escapist community. If you don't want to take this you don't have to but I would really appreciate your help as this survey is due on Friday.

1.) Are you currently in school? Yes or No.

2.)If so, what grade?

3.)Do you feel as if you are apart of a clique, and if so which clique?

4.)Has anyone else ever seen you as part of a clique?

5.)Do you ever associate with people outside of you clique?

6.)Have you ever treated someone outside of your clique differently, and if so how?

7.)Do different cliques hang out in different areas?

8.)Do you ever use the name of another clique as a put down?

9.)Do you get along better with people of the same clique as you?

10.)Do you use name of cliques to identify yourself? (i.e. I am a Jock,Geek,Prep, etc.)

11.)Has anyone ever treated you differently because of a clique you identified yourself as or were seen as being apart of?

12.)Do you feel that having cliques is a good thing why or why not?

To all those who answered or even looked over this thank you, and I'm sorry if the question order seems a bit scatter brained but I wrote them down as I thought them up. Once again thank you for even bothering to look at this thread let alone post.

You're gonna have a lot of problems with so many open questions. Next time I'd try and make them multiple choice.

2) Not relevant
3) No
4) Yes
5) Not relevant
6) Not relevant
7) Sometimes
8) Yes
9) Not relevant
10) Only to those who try to place me in one.
11) No, Yes
12) No, but human nature deems it necessary.

Are there even enough people that consider themselves in a clique to get a decent survey? You could probably write a paper on something a little more relevant. Unless your school is totally stereotypical than your probably going to be channeling what you learned about cliques in grade school with the teacher wondering "Why"?

Unless of course you are in grade school and you did just learn about cliques in Health class.

1. Yes.
2. Year 11 in England, not sure what grade that is.
3. I'm a cross-breed between emo, metal-head and goth in music preferences.
4. I'd guess yes.
5. I tend to like people based on personality rather than their clique unless they're a chav, then it's a mutual hatred.
6. Same as answer as number 5.
7. Yes.
8. Not really, I like to either call someone either a twat or a cock.
9. It completely depends on the person and their personality rather than what class they come from as a person.
10. Occasionaly if the situation should arise.
11. Yes.
12. It's a good thing because it brings with it a sense of belonging just like religion but on a smaller scale.

1.) Yes

2.) Uh, I dont live in America, but I'm in my last year of compulsory education

3.) I don't feel part of a clique, but I'm part of the gamer clique

4.) Yes

5.) Sometimes, yes.

6.) Yes, by emotionlessly talking to them or not talking to them at all.

7.) Yes, for example my gamer clique hangs out at a tree near the languages building

8.) Yes, lots.

9.) Yes, because people in my cliques share my common interest

10.) No, I identify myself with my name.

11.) Yes, all the time

12. I don't think cliques are a good thing to have as it leads to stereotypes and discrimination. On the other hand, they can help people make friends which is probably their only good point.

The only problem with this survey , as someone else has already mentioned, is that if your answer no to the first or third question you can't answer the rest.

Sure, I'm in.

1.) Are you currently in school? Yes or No.
Yes, college.

2.)If so, what grade?
14? College Sophomore.

3.)Do you feel as if you are apart of a clique, and if so which clique?
None such to speak of here in college, aside from Frats / Sororities. So no.

4.)Has anyone else ever seen you as part of a clique?
Do people undress me with their mind? I dunno, ask them.

5.)Do you ever associate with people outside of you clique?
Do I look that pretentious to you? Of course I associate with people outside of my group of friends.

6.)Have you ever treated someone outside of your clique differently, and if so how?
Yeah, sure. I treat them like I don't know them. More often than not, I don't.

7.)Do different cliques hang out in different areas?
That's human nature, so sure.

8.)Do you ever use the name of another clique as a put down?
How stereotypical were you going for these answers and questions? Nope, I'd like to think life's a little more mature than that.

9.)Do you get along better with people of the same clique as you?
I get along with people depending on how well the click with me, regardless of what flag they fly in their own free time.

10.)Do you use name of cliques to identify yourself? (i.e. I am a Jock,Geek,Prep, etc.)
I'm a robot overlord, clearly that's important enough.

11.)Has anyone ever treated you differently because of a clique you identified yourself as or were seen as being apart of?
By visuals, sure. But that's human nature too.

12.)Do you feel that having cliques is a good thing why or why not?
Personal opinion time. Cliques are an odd thing because they promote group-learning, inter-personal communication, and sociability. On the opposite hand, they encourage pretentiousness and elitism. They leave those who don't value themselves with aspirations of mediocrity, and open room for self-doubt and encourage hate. Overall, I think people could use cliques as good ways to associate with people of like minds, but instead tend to push away and create feelings of superiority.
Should humans ever understand equality in the most root-based form of the word, then good, but until they do, then it's an exercise in human cruelty and the darker aspects of the human condition.

But, to echo the very sexy Shivari.

I'm a junior in high school, so 11th grade, and I'm not part of a clique or label myself or anything like that so I'm not going to answer most of the questions, but I did want to comment on #12(Are cliques good?). It comes down to a person's self-confidence and how outgoing they are. It's a good thing if they need attention from other people to feel that they belong. It becomes indifferent to those who don't need the attention or can get it from other friends that aren't part of a clique. The problem is that a lot of cliques have very low self-confidence and often make fun of others to make themselves feel better.

Edit-NewClassic posted while I was writing and is a lot smarter than I am...If you can't understand his answer then you can use mine.

Everyone everyone is in a clique, in school or not. School cliques are particularly identifiable because you have such a large number of completely different individuals that are more or less forced to gather at a what one might consider an identity neutral location.

Add to that the fact that kids and young adults tend to behave in the excessive sense (not a bad thing, it's a normal part of the process) and school is an identifiably social setting which makes cliques particularly relevant to the environment.

That was an ignorant comment Shivari, in that it was uninformed and impolite. It's ironic that in suggesting that blaze's school is stereotypical you were behaving stereotypically "teenage girl".

Unfortunately I am not a school goer so I cannot provide relevant survey results.

1.) Are you currently in school?

No.

2.)If so, what grade?

Just finished at 18. Dunno what that'd be in American 'grades'.

3.)Do you feel as if you are apart of a clique, and if so which clique?

No.

4.)Has anyone else ever seen you as part of a clique?

Yes.

5.)Do you ever associate with people outside of you clique?

Uh, yes/not relevant

6.)Have you ever treated someone outside of your clique differently, and if so how?

No/not relevant

7.)Do different cliques hang out in different areas?

They did, I guess.

8.)Do you ever use the name of another clique as a put down?

I don't, but other people I know did.

9.)Do you get along better with people of the same clique as you?

Not relevant. I get on better with people who share my interests, I guess. It's easier to talk to people with more to talk about.

10.)Do you use name of cliques to identify yourself? (i.e. I am a Jock,Geek,Prep, etc.)

Not myself, no. I find I multi-classed early on in my school career.

11.)Has anyone ever treated you differently because of a clique you were seen as being apart of?

I couldn't say. Perhaps they treated me differently because they saw me in a clique, perhaps they treated me the way they did simply because of the way they saw me personally. You'd have to ask my ex-school mates for an answer.

12.)Do you feel that having cliques is a good thing why or why not?

I think it's an ultimately unavoidable thing. Whether I like it or not, therefore, seems like an unnecessary point to make. People associate better with those who share their interests. Such is the way of humanity from cradle to grave. Just look at how Political Parties formed. They're just a bunch of large cliques, in essence.

I'm going to have to disagree here. I spent most of my time in high school with the Newspaper staff. In newspaper, if you want to identify us by our "cliques", then we were 2 nerds, a cheerleader, 2 preps, an indie kid, and a goth. Despite our wide differences, we were closer with one-another than any of our more clique-ish counterparts.

What Shivari said had a lot of truth to it. Cliques are a social stigma designed as a group. The fact that people place others in stereotypical classifications isn't a normal social function, it's a form of segregation.

Despite the fact that I look like a nerd, and appear naturally non-atheletic, I run at the standard pace of most track kids, albeit a little slower. As such, I'm much more atheletically inclined than my supposed clique is defined. Also, I'm into video games and computers, although I focus a lot on FPS games like Halo, and party games like Rock Band (Which are more Frat-y than Nerd-y) than I do RPGs and Pen-And-Paper gaming. I'm also into cars, which is something that most people don't suspect of me, and I do dabble in a bit of fashion, which is almost exclusively lumped into the Gay/Lesbian/Metro crowd, which I am not a part of.

Cliques are a form of separation, and something I don't believe are healthy forms of communication and grouping. I'm friends with a drunk party chick, an English major, a band/art major, a goth, an early childhood education major, and two military junkies. These are my associates, but have nothing to do with the type of person I am. You can't just lump people into categories the way cliques do and say "They're normal."

If you do, then you're hardly scratching the surface, much less everything important about the person below.
