1.) Are you currently in school? Yes or No. Yes

2.)If so, what grade? Third year in college.

3.)Do you feel as if you are apart of a clique, and if so which clique? I was during middle and high school. I would call it a gamer-jock clique due to the fact that we were all into games as well as playing sports.

4.)Has anyone else ever seen you as part of a clique? Yes.

5.)Do you ever associate with people outside of you clique? Yes.

6.)Have you ever treated someone outside of your clique differently, and if so how? No.

7.)Do different cliques hang out in different areas? Sometimes.

8.)Do you ever use the name of another clique as a put down? No.

9.)Do you get along better with people of the same clique as you? It all depends, the reason people are in a clique is because they have more in common with each other than others, so it is easier to get along with people in your clique.

10.)Do you use name of cliques to identify yourself? (i.e. I am a Jock,Geek,Prep, etc.) No.

11.)Has anyone ever treated you differently because of a clique you identified yourself as or were seen as being apart of? No.

12.)Do you feel that having cliques is a good thing why or why not? Yes, they are a good thing because it allows you to be around people that you have a lot in common with. Most people feel better around people that are like themselves.

Well I was in Year 12 last year so I'll go from there.

1)See above

2)See above

3)Yes, umm.. "the kids that liked to muck around, break stuff and didn't take crap from westies and got drunk too often for it to be anything other than alcoholism"

4)I'd assume anyone who was at a distant would notice a collection of people in my general area.

5)Yes, I don't think that question needs to be asked, you have parents and teacher remember.

6)Yes, I didn't do the usual because they may have been into sport / art /etc.

7)Yes, my group hung out near the bush section of school so we could have stick wars, brick / cider block wars and such.

8)Yes. Let's see for if I can do this without it appearing like flaming.
Tradeys: Tradey Fucks, Cabbages, "Well at least I'm not a tradey"
Westies: "You're a westie", that's bad enough.
I'll stop now.

9)Some I do because they are my better friends but I also had friends to the same degree outside my "clique".

10)No.

11) Yes, the westies ad sports people.

12) It's neither good nor bad.

That's all I can be bothered remembering.

What Shivari said had a lot of truth to it. Cliques are a social stigma designed as a group. The fact that people place others in stereotypical classifications isn't a normal social function, it's a form of segregation.
The one problem with your thoughts here is that cliques are not social stigma designed as a group. No one is saying that a person cannot be a member of more than one clique, in fact most people are. Additionally, there's nothing in the concept of a "clique" that requires social malevolence such as active discrimination.

Shivari said:
I fail to see how it was impolite.
1. the subject you found interesting enough to write a paper on is irrelevant.
2. It of course may be relevant if you are in a freak school that has jocks and goths and all the things of a bad eighties sitcom
3. Or it might be relevant if you are a cutsie little waggabuffin who has to take those silly little freshman courses.

None of that reads very nice at all, by way of example I through that "stereotypical girl" quip in, did you find that at all charming?

Everyone seems to be of the mindset that cliques are defined as the Jocks and the Nerds and the Goths and the Slackers. All gather together in little circles because they all dress and talk the same and they make fun of or fight with the other "cliques" Rival Schools style.

In fact it is a lot more complex than that.

Shivari, you admitted to having a group of friends, all of whom are apparently of the other predefined "cliques" you can think of. One probably has a nose ring, one plays the flute, the other really loves her part time job butchering chickens at a local farm. You all probably go to movies and have sleep overs and talk about lame Mr. Jackson at lunch time (obviously I'm being a bit silly here) but the point is you hang out. Congratulations, you are in a clique. You have formed a social group based on a number of unspoken, but clearly established factors. Whether it is that you dress the same, go to the same church, all enjoy a good party, or just all get 70's in math and don't academically intimidate each other, there is a reason you are a group of friends and that group does not include everyone you know.

Next post lunch class, look around the room and ask yourself why you didn't and never really have hung out with that guy or that girl. Then ask yourself do you disrespect them, do you call them names, or wish only the worst for them. Answers probably no, but they are not a part of your social circle. Why?

Until you get 33 more posts you are nothing!

*This is obviously an example of cliquery (a word as of now), that, as I way saying, is not very prevalent.
As I said before, that is not an example of "cliquery". That is an example of discrimination (which is rampant world wide by the way), it's a simple case of getting past the pre-assumptions of what the word represents to you, it's fascinating so many people find this so difficult.

I'm well read on O.B. (that's organizational behavior for the uninitiated) I wanted to be a profiler for a time, and always found it very interesting.

What I shall submit is, especially in the context of the schools, and the age groups that are populating said schools, you will likely not find one without the other, hence my opinion as it is.

Cliques are an odd thing because they promote group-learning, inter-personal communication, and sociability. On the opposite hand, they encourage pretentiousness and elitism. They leave those who don't value themselves with aspirations of mediocrity, and open room for self-doubt and encourage hate. Overall, I think people could use cliques as good ways to associate with people of like minds, but instead tend to push away and create feelings of superiority.
Should humans ever understand equality in the most root-based form of the word, then good, but until they do, then it's an exercise in human cruelty and the darker aspects of the human condition.
It's not that you can't find one without the other, because they can be independent. It's that you don't find one without the other. Anyone who defines themselves as a clique is highly likely to down-play or down-talk those who aren't in too. Football players, cheerleaders, goths, metalheads, nerds, dorks, Trans-Atlantic Swedish Stripper Teams, whatever.

But I fail to see how I have to be in a clique because someone says so. If people define me as such, do I really need to acknowledge it? By the same logic, would I not have to also call myself as others see me?

The point is, nine days out of ten, people who promote their cliques, or social classifications, or whatever, will very probably insult others for the mere fact that they aren't a part of the same group.

It has the option to not be a problem, but it still is a problem, because people are cruel, evil, hateful, and above all else, self-centered.
Especially at that age.

Oh, I just got into this elite club. Screw you Pulitzer Laureates!
So did I! Sorry, Pulitzers.
I wonder what would happen if I got to 999 posts, and just disappeared forever? (Or until the Cockney thread re-emerges, either way.)

Do you value fractals in your ranks, as well? I'm sure with a little parameter-tweaking, I could be the perfect Gonzo fractal!

...................................

...Back on topic, this is a good show of how some cliques are more appealing than others

I dunno, I think I'm a good addition to the Pultizers. Besides, what future do I have to look forward to without the Cockney thread?

Today...the Escapist. Tomorrow...probably still the Escapist, but one day possibly soon (probably not though) the world! And we all know how much we love world domination.

By the way, has anyone noticed how I've assisted in steering no less than two active threads completely off topic?

It's not completely de-railing, as we are demonstrating perfect examples of clique-ish behavior, and the sort of divisions they cause. It's artistic demonstration. Mono-rail'd [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/18.72805.790112]. All aboard, bzzt bzzt!

[sup]Also, I think I'm going to make a thread to discuss this, since I'm de-railing the hell out of blaze69's subject data.[/sup]

Man, the quote tower is buggered. You're Virgil and I'm wilson. Well, unless you did that deliberatly like some crazy mod immitator.

as for the subject data, he's likely got everything he needed after the first 5 posts and the little debate that went down. Everything after that is just gravy. Sweet onion gravy.

Naw, I never screw with the names in the quote towers, you're just seeing things.

True enough, and I do like gravy. Dunno about that onion gravy, though...

On Topic, yo.
Oddly enough, that whole little discussion does a lot more to speak about on cliques than I ever could, especially considering how I didn't do any of that deliberately. Amazing what I can see about myself through introspection after the fact... Maybe I should redo that survey...
