No one else a Suffering fan here?
I am. Pretty good game, although the sequel 'Ties that Bind' just somehow didn't feel right, or that it fit in with the predecessor.

Horrer can't exist in a video game for I'm not afraid of dying and thus making whatever thing thats chasing me a mere simple Goomba on roids and might be undead. However some "horror" games have made me go that's an "intresting" twist. To name my favorite Bioshock isnt horror because you has weapons and are trapped in room with evil baddies but just mindwarps you a bit and makes you think how crazed the game is. I'm looking at getting Dead Space once I has moneys again which doesnt look for a long time. Damn you Mirror's Edge and Gears 2.
Leave English alone! What did he ever do to you?

Jokes aside, I've always dug the Silent Hill series. The original Resident evil also did the Survival and Horror bits best. It got better at the action bits as the series progressed. Nothing will ever beat taking down the Tyrant with my last handgun round and running my ass to the helipad. That's scary.

I think there's a difference between "survival horror" and merely scary. I think if you're armed to the teeth, it doesn't qualify as survival horror. I think "survival horror" implies more of an "everyman" protagonist, i.e., someone like "us", someone hurled into a situation for which they are not prepared or trained.

Which isn't to say games where you're armed to the teeth can't be "horror", but I question their inclusion as "survival horror."

I don't much actually like to play horror games, but Resident Evil is amazing, because between laughing my head off over the flawed logic, I get startled by unexpcted Freezer zombies.

My favorites:

1.Dead Space

That's it, I don't really play survival horror games, actually Dead Space was my first. I only got it because it looked good, and I do like horror movies/games, just haven't gotten the chance to play many. Maybe some time I'll pick up the Condemned games. Dead Space was a good game though.

Bioshock
Despite the fact that it's not scary as such, it's got a haunting atmosphere.

House of the Dead? Again not scary but it is about surviving and is a horror game.

I find with a lot of survival horror games that they fail to evoke a lot of fear in me, I mean sure, its fun and scary when you're being chased and you're avoiding being killed by monsters, but the a monster hits you or bites you or something, and you take damage, then you pull one of those, if I may quote Yahtzee, Press X not to die moments, and suddenly, the game has become a rather mediocre hack n' slash with limited resources. Meanwhile, your inept companions are being devoured and I have to drag them around by the collar throughout the whole game because they're important to the story when I'd really just like to sacrifice their asses so I can escape. Really, what I'm complaining about is that survival horror monsters aren't like their movie counterparts. I realize that in movies someone can die and its part of the story it makes the experience scarier. And while I do realize that any survival horror game that had mostly monsters whose attacks counted as one hit kills as movie monsters often do, the whole game would be cheap, frustrating, and I'd probably throw my controller about half way through the game. That said, it kinda cheapens the experience when you realize that no matter how many times that guy with claws pulls a move that would eviscerate you in real life, you can tap a button and heal your self with a convenient "med pack". And by the way, I realize you can't actually do that seeing as med-packs are in short supply and thats what makes survival horror games survival-y, but I suppose I'm still just a purist in that respect. All said though, I'm really optimistic about this new resident evil game and Valve's Left 4 Dead. Survival Horror multiplayer co-op is something we haven't seen a lot of and I'm practically drooling over what looks from the demos and press releases to be a competent AI partner in RE

Damn my inability to find a version of System Shock compatible with Windows XP!

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (it has SH sections!)

I chose that because it's really the only SH game I've played. I would really like to try SS 1 and 2, as well as Silent Hill 1 and 2. Mostly 2, though.

I still haven't been able to get SS2 to work for XP, even though I've been told that it should.
To get System Shock 2 working with XP, go to Good old Games. They can hook you up.

Will it work for Vista too?

I believe the best way to convey the feeling we all pray for when playing a "Survival Horror" game is the feeling of vulnerability. To my experience, the only game so far to properly convey both vulnerability and a fear of the unknown was System Shock 2.

Not only could your handgun break, but it might also be your last bullet, to be fired at a threat whose motive and origin you can only guess at. Combined with the narrative audiobooks and masterful atmosphere, it crafted an experience I've not been able to enjoy in any other game since.

I agree about Bioshock, I had forgotten about the atmosphere of that game. My box broke the last time I tried to play through it but I just went back to it and it really is spooky throughout.

Well, my top 5 are as follows:

1- Alone in the Dark: the new nightmare
2- Silent Hill 2 (special edition)
3- Dead Space
4- Run Like Hell
5- Resident Evil 2

I'm suprised that some people here have forgotten what a survival horror is, correct me if I am wrong but Bioshock isn't real a survival horror (in fact, it wasn't even spooky), it's a shooter with RPG elements and the occasion jump moment (if Bioshock is a SH then so is Doom 3) and FEAR is definatly not a survival horror (it's a damn military shooter with all the lights switched off).

Eternal Darkness because when your Tv turns it self of or your characters head explodes, you now i game is gonna make you shit yourself.
Also i was once playing it the living room when my mums was there, and because my charcter was screaming and there were crying baby noises in the background my mum told me to turn it down, i reached for the controller just as a hallucination in the game turned the volume of itself down. thought my Gamecube was going to kill me

My Top 5 include the whole series, not just the first title as I think they all have scary aspects

1. Fatal Frame
2. Silent Hill
3. Condemned
4. Siren
5. Undying (Not really survival horror, but scared me nontheless)

And a special place belongs (as always) to the 'Thief' games. Neither survival nor horror it still manages to maintain a creepy, twisted atmosphere which I cannot forget even years after playing.

More likely it doesn't exist because it's not a word.

Silent Hill 2 wins.
Wow, I fail today.

My top 5...

1. Dead Space (hopefully it will revitalize the genre)
2. Silent Hill 2
3. Fatal Frame 2
4. RE Remake for GC
5. Suffering

I don't really consider FEAR and BioShock to be survival horror, even though they are both very good games. I would also add Alien V. Predator 2. A game with a very creepy atmosphere when you are playing as human.

My personal top 5:
(5) Clock Tower. It's brutally dated but does tell a creepy little tale. Plus, who wouldn't find hiding in a restroom stall from a deformed killer weilding a pair of giant hedgeclippers just a bit terrifying.
(4) Resident Evil(original). The entire reason this thread exists, the original RE has become something of a punch line (master of unlocking? Jill sandwich anyone?) but once, it was a harrowing treck through a colossal mansion occupied by some of the most repulsive inhabitants of our nightmares. This tense and haunting atmosphere still carries weight to this day.
(3) The Suffering. This game took a scary place that is aready populated with real life monsters, prison, and made it worse. An opressive atmosphere, a brutal but conflicted protagonist, and some fantastic creature designs set all make the Suffering a unique and compelling horror game.
(2) Silent Hill 2. Everything in Silent Hill 2 is your enemy. Both silence and sound, both light and shadow. From the desolate fog-shrouded streets, to the twisted walls of blood splattered industrial grating, to the hideous monsters that dwell within James Sunderland's ravaged psyche and crawl out from every darkened corridor. An absolute mind f**k of a game that no fan of horror should ignore.
(1) Dead Space. The next evolution in survival horror. The game features thrilling combat (how many survival horror games can claim that?) and some of the most terrifying monsters I have ever faced in a game. The atmoaphere is off the charts to, miking Alien-like sci-fi desolation with a Silent Hill-inspired audio assault.

Wow, from all the plugs its getting on this board, I'm thinking I missed out on something great by not getting Dead Space
