I swear in nearly every single post but I don't swear at people and call them names, that's where the mods draw the line. I've had some people tell me that I'll get in trouble from the mods for swearing though, which is pretty weird considering that when one video of ZP had the swears bleeped out nearly everyone went crazy over 'censorship' and what have you. Yahtzee is allowed to swear but I'm not? Bah. Obligatory swear: Fuck
Which video was that?

Why should it matter? First, I don't think swear words should be any more offensive than any other words.
Second, I thought that was why there was an age limit... Meh.

I clicked on this thread just for the fucking privilege of posting some stupid pointless shitty post containing some words that I wouldn't fucking use like this. So take that asshat.

I swear a blue fucking streak, but always for emphasis. I don't drop a Cluster F Bomb; I'm more the Precision F Strike type.

If a thread is about something that some of the younger users on the Escapist might watch, and no-one up until the point I post has been swearing I'm not gonna be the one who starts it. But if someone else has already done it, I figure the damage is already done... but I don't mind it. I just don't use those words unless I'm really angry about something.

I don't care. I think it's kind of odd when I see people censor themselves when they swear though.
This is one of the two things that piss me off in a text-based medium - The idea that if you write c*nt, you're not swearing and everything's fine and dandy, ignoring the fact you did, in fact, write **** and no ammount of asterisks will change that. It's up there with 'pron' in the list of self-censoring that makes the writer look like a twat.

The other thing (because I know how much you care...) is the phrase 'I'm sorry but...'. It's a phrase I've seen increasingly recently and appears to be shorthand for 'I'm not sorry at all, but by saying this I can fall back to the argument that I've already apologised, so at least my rampant dickery is PC!'. It's the all-purpose variant of 'I'm not a racist, but...'.

But what if you write c***? Because in that case, I only typed a "c" and asterisks. Maybe I'm typing the title of a movie, and I don't want to say the word but want to use the actual movie title so folks know what I'm talking about. Or game title. Maybe the game is Space C**** Battle Spider Hitler, and I want to mention how the flaming swastikas in level 4 (the galactic sewage treatment plant) are totally unfair because they kill you in two hits.

I don't swear. It's part of what makes me who I am. If you don't like it, whatever. I agree that it's lame to self-censor if you're somebody who does swear. In the rare instance I have to manually quote somebody or mention a movie and the issue of being forced to include swear words does come up, I typically include only the first letter and censor the others. In real life I would probably have found a more creative way to deal with the problem, but nobody wants to hear about the awesome movie I watched about superheroes called Kick-Heinie.

"Pron" is totally lame, though. I mean, pornography isn't a swear word-it's a word describing something that exists. Like when somebody uses the medical terms for one of the various reproductive organs. It's not obscene-it's the proper term. If one is worried about kids hearing the word "porn" and looking it up, "pron" certainly isn't any BETTER. As far as I know (haven't checked), an unfiltered Google search involving "pron" in the subject line will turn up roughly as many naked pictures as with the proper spelling.

Don't mind at all, as long as you're not using it to insult people pointlessly.

Edit: ****.

I think light to moderate swearing is permitted, but I'm pretty sure the mods would strike down someone if they used an explitive every other word. Do not quote me on that though.

OT: Doesn't bother me. I think of swearing like flavor text.

I don't care about it. The way I see it, people are just broadening their vocabulary; unless they do it every-other word.

Adding "Fucking" to your statements don't actually raise the intellectual value of the post.

I keep my swearing to a minimum, along with smileys, and seriousness.

Swearing is tolerated if:

1) Used correctly (as in, not casually)

2) In moderation (as in, not casually)

3) Is tasteful (as in, not casually)

Hope that helps.
