Does Crash Team Racing count?

You can buy it on the PSN store for a cheap price and it has been around for a long time.

How realistic are we talking? I absolutely loved both Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and Blur. They ought to be cheap now.

Well GT5, you really can't get a more PS3ish realistic racing game then that, they got every car and track modeled down to the finest detail.
But well it's still $40 in retail, maybe find one on ebay for less.

And if you play on PC then I would direct you to Trackmania 2, it's $20, realistic driving but the tracks are completely off the fucking hook.
Not to mention one of the snazziest track editors I've seen.

GT5 for sure but if you want something less difficult/sim-racing, I highly recommend Race Driver: GRID. Easily one of the best and most fun racing games I've played. It's got everything from touring, GT1, GT2, LMP1, LMP2, drift, demolition derby, muscle, exotic, import. Purchase your own cars, tweak the paint job, earn new sponsors and get bonus cash for completing their race objectives (finish race, finish better than X position, don't take any damage, etc).

If you plan to get GT5 make sure you get the XL Edition that came out recently. It includes all the free updates so far and a $20 voucher to spend on any DLC you see fit.

GRID is awesome, it's not too realistic but not too arcadey either. Every car is just so fucking satisfying to drive. That, combined with the awesome sound, graphics, racing tracks and cockpit view make it one of the best racing games I've played. DiRT 2 and 3 are also pretty awesome, although for some reason I enjoyed DiRT 2 a lot more even though they're both kinda the same. Whilst not realistic, Midnight Club: LA and Motorstorm: Apocalypse are great racing games too.

Ignore the reviews. The Run is crazy fun. It's a nice mix between sim and arcade driving and some of the tracks are sick.
Most of the complaints I've seen in reviews are about the story mode, which is so innocuous as to almost be non-existant. I am about a third to halfway through it and have only run into one of the quick time events that I heard were so annoying and it wasn't even that bad. Kind of cheesy and Michael Bay like which fits the tone of the game and gives a suitable setting to an over the top racing game. Did I mention some of the tracks are sick. There is one downhill track with double digit hairpin turns. I did it last night in the rain in a Lamborghini Aventador.

Edit: Plus the Run isn't selling for full price anymore. You should be able to get it for $40 or less.

Dirt 1
GT5
GRID

All cheap but awesome driving games. Dirt is probably my favourite, the other two i traded in after having them for about 6 months because i was short on cash for new games.. but now i kinda regret doing that :(

Also Burnout Paradise is fun if you're looking for a more arcadey type game but it doesnt really stand up if you're wanting more than just to mess about.

Also about Dirt, I liked the first and second quite a bit, but the 3rd one not so much. The only good thing about Dirt 3 was gymkhana.
Have to agree there. I was really surprised by how much I liked the first Dirt in particular, because I don't usually get along with the more realistic end of the racing/driving game spectrum that well. My favorite from the past few years is still Burnout Paradise, but I actually ended up having a lot of fun with Dirt when I got it on sale just for the hell of it.

Well seeing as how this is the internet, I refuse to allow you to have a different opinion. Pistols at dawn?

I disagree. Just because its an arcade racer doesn't make it any less of a driving game :)
It capitalises on the other things that more realistic racing games shy away from, that being smashing cars and doing stunts.

Need for speed shift or shift 2 was supposed to be quite good.
I also recommend driver San Francisco. - Very good driving, has racing AND a story, smashing of cars and police pursuits etc.
Driver SF is my perfect drving game. Plus takedown mode on multiplayer is just. So. Damn addictive!
When i find people playing it anyway....

There's something I find inherently captivating about the Shift/ProStreet entries in the Need for Speed series, and while the physics might not be adhering to any strict "Impress Jeremy Clarkson" realism clause, it's easy to pick up and as challenging as you want to make it.

For something a little more off the beaten path, Test Drive Unlimited 2. Large open world fulla unlockables, constant variety in challenges from the player base, and just idling around from point to point on the map is made oddly rewarding.

Whichever way you go, shouldn't cost you more than $20 to get involved.

You may enjoy the Flatout games. They're slightly realistic, but they are cheap, and on Steam. They look nice, and have low system requirements. And, they're insanely fun. If you have a 360, or original xbox, look for Project Gotham Racing 2. It's about $2.50 used, and it's incredibly fun. I can't recommend PGR 3, or 4, as I haven't played them, but, knowing the company, they should be good as well.

I didnt say it was less of a driving game, i was saying that because of its arcadey nature it might not be what he's looking for.

And no im not saying Arcade games are automatically inferior, but in the specific case of Burnout Paradise, yes driving about and causing crashes and other chaos is fun. But that fun wares out and i couldnt play it for more than half an hour - an hour at a time. Whereas in Dirt for example, i could sit and race on the same track for hours on end trying to beat my times and never get bored... It just depends what you're wanting to get out of the game.
