Midnight Club: Los Angeles.

I don't know how it hasn't been posted yet, but seriously check it out. Insane customization, great atmosphere, great controls. It is pretty much Fast and Furious the game. You know the racing parts of Fast and Furious? Yeah, that is this game. You race in "underground" street racing circuits thus cops are a problem, and you do so for money and pink slips alike. Damages to your car must be repaired, it uses a reputation system for content unlocking. Has a vast map that races use for street racing. I mean, its made by Rockstar.

Perceived Cons:
It does use rubber-banding which is a personal taste thing, I don't find it an issue but some do. It's there to keep the race exciting from beginning to end.
Some complain it is too hard, maybe they just suck at racing games, I don't know. I find it challenging but not overbearing.
Some complain about the urban dialogue and T-mobile sidekick feature, I think it adds more to the game based on what it was trying to capture.

It's my favorite racing game by far. GT5 is OK, NFS is ok, nothing beats this game though for street racing.

GT5 has been around for ever now, you should be able to pick it up fairly cheap. While the AI is dishwater-dull, online is actually pretty good fun. The game has been around long enough now that the community mainly consists of those who are in the game for the long haul and actually want to race like minded competitors. In other words, the rammers have all long since fucked off.

F1 2011 can be picked up fairly cheap too - it was a disaster on the PS3 at launch and bombed. Every branch of GAME I went to around mid-november had tons of the fucking thing pre-owned. The thing is, they've actually patched it up to a pretty decent standard now. Do be sure to look up the tyre bug they missed though. It's not a game-breaker - if you know it's there and how to work around it!

Need for Speed: Shift Unleashed 2 probably sits about halfway between realistic and arcade. The developer really wanted to go for realism, but EA said "no". It shows, with a very "hybrid" handling system that sometimes feels simple, and other times leaves you fighting against the car with no real idea what the problem is.

As for The Run? Shite. Hot Pursuit is still head and shoulders the best PS3 NFS to date.

Other racers worth a look:

Driver San Francisco - a driving game as opposed to a straight racer, but still good fun for a week or so.

F1: Championship Edition - a bit long in the tooth now, and with a woefully out of date driver and team line up. Still a fucking ace game though, with a good difficulty curve and interactive pitstops that can win or lose the race if the mechanics fumble a tyre change because you fucked up the QTE. And this was before the term "QTE" had even been invented. And it was actually fairly demanding compared to today's "interactive cutscenes" that QTE's have become.

WRC - Now I know it didn't do well critically. But here's the thing - it lost a lot of marks for a lack of spit and polish. I only have last year's edition to go by, but I believe this years is not significantly different. Now, although it lacks a bit of shine, everyone knows that rally cars are not supposed to shine. They are supposed to leap grunting and snorting across yumps and through streams and to be utterly covered in filth and muck. If you don't get mud on the roof, you are DOING IT WRONG! And that is where WRC is actually pretty damn good once you get to grips with setting up the car. It's such a demanding task to thread your 300bhp 4WD monster through narrow, twisty gravel and mud paths with trees and rocks lining the way as opposed to half a mile of gravel and some nice comfy tyres to end up in. Seriously, fuck the critics - it will cost you like £10 or something, and I guarantee that if you like a hard, challenging car game that has a go at being serious, then you will definitely get your £10 worth.

Wipeout - It's old. It's ancient. The franchise goes back to the launch of the PlayStation (back before it was called PSOne or PSX or PS-whateverthefuck). But it's still brilliant fun. It can be frustrating and hard as nails as you move to the faster, high tier races, but that's how any game should be. Work for those trophies, motherfuckers!! And the online community is still healthy(ish) after Sony gave the game away on the back of the PSN hack-a-thon.

DIRT has specifically not been mentioned, because the only one I have is the original Colin McRae Dirt. I suspect the series has moved on leaps and bounds, and I remember it being pretty good fun, but leaving me unsure as to whether I was supposed to take it seriously or approach it as a pure arcade racer?

Best thing to do? Rent (or borrow from mates) a few before deciding which one you are most likely to sink serious time into before buying. A couple may even have demo's on PSN. I know there are still F1:CE and GT5 playables on there. A couple of months back anyway. Maybe.

Have fun whichever you pick, and I may even bump into you online. Only because my mirrors were too small though...!

[EDIT]: How the FUCK did I forget Burnout Paradise? 'Tis truly awesome.

Except the OP wants it on PS3, so that rules out GTR2 and anything by SiMBiN, indeed any hard core sim at all.

Anyway OP the most sim like offering I can think of is F1 2011, a definite improvement on 2010, its price (on PC anyway) drops dramatically after release because it is such a niche title. If you like some realism and shaving thousandths of a second off you lap then F1 2011 may be for you.
All I've heard is that the PS3 version looks and plays like shit compared to F1 2010.

It was. It was utter pish on launch, and it's still not the prettiest racer in the world. Now, I personally thought it improved after the patches. Some disagree. There are a couple of hundred pages of forum rage about this over at the CM forums but my opinion, at the end of the day, is that the game is actually pretty good now. Far from perfect, but I've actually had a ton of fun with it.

Probably helps to be an F1 fan to get so into it though. If you aren't an F1 fan then you might want to look elsewhere.

The racing is actually really good at the higher levels, but it helps to have a basic understanding of how Formula 1 racing actually works as the game doesn't give you much help. It assumes it's being played by people who know how to sort out the loose rear end on an F1 car, or who know how to work a tyre strategy up for a weekend of performance tests on the Friday, and Grand Prix racing on the Saturday and Sunday. If you are now wondering what the fuck I just said, then you might get pissed off real quick at this game.

If you want a good, honest challenge that will last you ages though, then it's definitely a contender.

It's good to hear, but after F1 2010 on the 360, I don't feel like supporting them anymore. The game was just as frustrating as it was brilliant, and I didn't like their attitude. I would still pick up F1 2009 on the PSP if I see it at a reasonable price, though (saw it at 40$ used today).

Maybe he'd like F1 CE, looks like a nice game too. You guys have so much choice on PS3!

Ahhh the problems of recommending cross platform games when you've only played on one of the platforms. Well F1 2010 was still pretty good, so maybe that is a possibility. Not without its problems but still enjoyable. Should be even cheaper too.

I'd suggest Forza 4 for shear realism, it even beats out GT5 a bit. But GT5 has a much larger garage of cars to choose from so its a bit of a toss up.

Get Burnout 3.

Yes, the game isn't a realistic game. Still get Burnout 3.

Yes, the game is technically not for the PS3. Acquire Burnout 3 at all costs. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

my only bog complaint is that all the characters are douches.
also no offense but have you considered typing out the entire word? typing in SMS speak makes you look immature.

20$ less but without India and Nurb, though. Good thing is: no DRS and KERS! It's strange how they could mess it up so bad, it's almost the same game.

Slightly unrelated because of the platform difference, but for anyone interested Nitronic Rush is a free PC "racing game" that's quite insane and extremely fun. Also has a sweet soundtrack: http://nitronic-rush.com/

I thought DRS and KERS were pretty good additions. Sure, the DRS zones are wrong in the last 3 or 4 circuits, but as those races weren't held until post-release and the FIA were not announcing the DRS zone until the weekend of the race you can't really blame them for having to make a "best guess". I thought the F1 2011 gameplay was nowhere near as bad though. The AI doesn't make as blatant use of rubber-banding and the handling has been revamped. Turn off the driver assists and it's chalk and cheese with 2010.

Pick up Dirt 1, 2 and 3. They're all pretty great, although I think the first one is the best. I think Grid is the non-rallying equivalent (same engine and things), but I've not played it.

I know they had to put it in the game and they did what they could, I just don't like the little electronic tricks in racing. I'd rather stick to F1 2010. I also doubt the handling is that much better, but maybe I'll try it sometime.

Ah, I'm right with you there, Brother! I'm not a big fan of driver aids either, but as far as CodeMasters are concerned, they had to put it in as part of the license.

2010 v 2011 handling - I wouldn't say it's "better", it's just different. I feel more like there is a connection between my control inputs and what my virtual car does as opposed to last year when I always thought it felt a bit "floaty-light". Sorry, I just can't describe it better than that! Oh, they sorted out the "tap the brakes to stop a spin" bullshit too.

Man, I used to really be into racing games back when I played a lot of N64 and PS2 games. I don't think I have much in the way of more modern ones.

I guess on the off chance your PS3 is one of the backwards-compatible ones you could try picking up a copy of Jak X: Combat Racing. Pretty tough, but I had a lot of fun with it.

As for more modern driving games, I did have plenty of fun when I briefly played Driver: San Francisco.
