A new flu virus suspected of killing at least 60 people in Mexico has the potential to become a pandemic, the World Health Organization's chief says.

Margaret Chan said the outbreak was a "serious situation" which needed to be followed closely.

Health experts say tests so far seem to link the illnesses in Mexico with a swine flu virus in the southern US.

A top US health official said the strain of swine flu had spread widely and could not be contained.

Ms Chan cut short a visit to the US and returned to Geneva where the WHO's emergency committee met.
It is time for all hypocondriacs like myself to unite, and spend a few weeks hiding in our bedrooms with pillow-cases over our heads while detergent is continually sprayed over our food. Anyone else heard anything about this flu out-break?

Nope. Haven't heard a thing.
I have to admit I was hoping that the word "zombie" or "rabies" would be in that sentence. Pandemics suck when you fight the disease, not the living dead. :(

This is completely not a ploy by Jews such as myself to weaken and enslave you lesser races.

Enjoy your BLTs.

Nothing to panic about. At least not for me. I live in the North East.

Not that I think this virus will turn into a major epidemic.

I don't think it'll pose to much of a threat. Maybe a small scale epidemic, but there's no way it'll turn into a full blown pandemic. They thought that might happen with SARS and the Avian Flu, and it didn't.

Next, it'll be Cat flu or Worm flu, I swear...

Well, I live all the way on the other side of the ocean so...

Anyways, I don't think this will be too much of a problem, I mean, do any of you remember bird flu? That was supposed to be the apocalypse or something, and after a couple of months nobody even remembered what it was so, excuse me if I don't worry too much about this one.

Of course it's a panic. Only worry when the headline say it's hit europe / the UK.

Remember Bird Flu? What happened there huh? They closed a couple of farms.

The thing about birdflu is it couldn't be spread from person to person. If you got it, you got seriously sick. But getting it wasn't easy. You had to be in close contact with birds who were infected. The thing the WHO feared was it mutating to a variant that could spread from person to person, but thankfully doesn't seem to be as virulent as birdflu.

This one apparently can.

More info.

More deaths, and it is now confirmed to be spreading from person to person. Just reading this crap is giving me a sore throat. Anyone got a trip to Mexico planned or anyone live in Mexico who can give us any info on this?

I just made a thread based on this. Mexican perspective. Three people from my state just bit the dust a little while back.

Don't be so happy: there seems to be cases in Spain and Israel (got the info from unabomberman's thread), so it can spread across the pond.

Safe as usual in good old invincible Australia.

I think this will blow over soon enough, if it gets more serious then it will get lots of media hype like SARS did then it will disappear.

I'll be fine. Its more dangerous to be around my cat's litterbox. Which is next to the computer...Unless the number of people with the illness hits 100k, I'm not concerned.
