Switzerland to Ban Violent Videogames

The Swiss National Council has enacted a law that will allow it to ban violent videogames.

Last February, the Swiss government considered several resolutions regarding the restriction of game sales based on content. The first was a resolution that would ban the sale of games that do not bear the PEGI age rating and introduce stricter ID requirements. These measures had already been voluntarily presented to retailers, and would mirror the practices of many other nations. The second resolution that passed, however, was a bit more unsettling, calling for an outright ban of all adult or violent game titles in the country. And it just passed.

At the moment the exact details are still under deliberation and have not been revealed, but what is certain is the Swiss government now has the power to impose rather stringent restrictions on the gaming industry, at the very least likely banning games with a PEGI rating of 16+ or 18+. To its credit, the gaming industry lobbied for more of a self-regulatory program, but the government has shown its intent to crack down on gaming content with far greater fervor. It is truly a great blow to Swiss gamers, but at the moment there seems to be very little that can be done but hope the ban will not be as absolute as the measure implies.

o_O The world has gone insane. I need to buy every violent game on my wish list before Canada starts thinking that this is a good idea.

No way. But what will they blame everything on now?
Movies. Then TV. Then schools.

But god forbid they make people actually take responsability for their actions.

Well, it looks like Atkinson has struck again. That's so ridiculous!

Movies can be rated 16+ or 18+, but not games? Are we really kidding ourselves saying that no children will ever see 16+ or 18+ rated material, be it movies or games?

That's total bullshit. I spent my shildhood watching Robocop and Total Recall, both kinda violent movies, and didn't turn into a mass murderer. Then again, I've been educated properly...

I'll mail them to you!

DON'T WORRY SWISS GAMERS!

What about downloadable violent games? Like on XBLA, PSN, and Steam? Will this affect them, too?

...im sorry my Swiss gaming Brothers and Sisters.
this actually makes me extremely happy i live in America.
This also pisses me off, the government honestly believes that only they can make the decision on what game a person can and cant play?
Its a false sense of power, that's all it is, they just want more power.

Well, seems that Thompson/Atkinson/Vaz (the Unholy Trinity) have their precedent. Next time anyone complains about them they'll just have to mention Switzerland. This is a massive blow not only to Swiss gamers, but to gamers everywhere. And it's unfair, I mean, music/TV/film don't have these kinds of restrictions (if they did, Lars von Trier for one would be out a job...).

The hell...?
I thought Switzerland was a progressive country. We've been over this: video games don't cause violence (aside from the occasional freak incident).

Poor Hubilub. Once he hears of this news, he will probably be sad.

EDIT: Whoops, no he won't. He's not Swiss.

You do know that he's Swedish, right?

OT: To everyone who still thinks that violent video games is causing problem, here's my sentiment to them:
But seriously, this is getting out of hand. I hope to God that Sweden won't jump on the bandwagon. Blaming video games is just yet another excuse so people won't blame parents and mental disorders. And in most of these cases posted by bullshit news sources, the game has barely anything to with the real problem.
