Oh no! No violent videogames?! How will people survive?! Those barbarians, not allowing games where the sole purpose is how much blood you can spill, and how realistic it looks. How uncivilized, non-progressive, and archaic!

/sarcasm

Look folks, maybe we shouldn't cry out about how governments want to limit and restrict our ability to bloody things up, do drugs, and see boobies, in videogames. It doesn't really help the "mature gamer" mantra.

Switzerland recognises that as the world changes, it faces new challenges in formulating its foreign policy. Switzerland has defined the following foreign policy objectives:

Peaceful coexistence of people of all nations
Switzerland wants to play an active role in the prevention of violent conflict. This includes the establishment of the rule of law, support for democratic norms and the promotion of dialogue.

Respect for and promotion of human rights
Respect for human rights is of utmost importance to Switzerland. Switzerland has long been an active campaigner for the cause of human rights.

Environmental sustainability
Switzerland is internationally active in promoting the development of an international system for protecting the environment. This includes agreements in the fields of climate, biological diversity and chemicals as well as the protection of water and forests.

Representing the interests of Swiss businesses abroad
The Swiss government wants to provide the best possible conditions for Swiss businesses. Measures include export promotion, support for research and training in Switzerland as well as the signing of multilateral and bilateral agreements with other states.

Alleviating need and poverty in the world
Switzerland places the fight against poverty at the centre of its development aid policy. It is continually increasing its financial assistance in this field. At the centre of its development aid policy is the promotion of income and employment, good governance, development of the private sector, sustainable use of natural resources, integration into the global trade system, debt relief, bridging the social gap, crisis prevention and crisis management.

Also home of the Geneva Convention and the Red Cross.

Go figure they have some sort of opposition to violence in videogames.

Honestly, hand to god, if this sort of shit happened in Britain, I'd just break the law.

I can't really put into words how much this infuriates me without having to go away and carefully plan it to avoid a rant.

For now I'll content myself with: There is NO justification for censorship of this level.

If this limited itself to games such as Manhunt, GTA series or others of the same kind but that I cannot think of from lack of knowledge, It wouldn't be such an issue (In my opinion, some game DO take it way to far in terms of violence), I would even be somewhat supportive. But they are putting games where any minor display of violence under severe restriction (for minors, so I can agree with that) or simply ban it.

And if they really were so much against violence, they would have to ban movies, books, and even some music perhaps. But I still see posters for movies with an obvious amount of violence in them around here. There is much hypocrisy in these motions that it's not even funny anymore.

I think Nachos and Kebabs are the next big things on our list

EDIT: And yes, the minaret thing was based on a democratic vote, sadly.
note that the actual number of voters at that time was probably somewhere around 20-40% of the population (after removing the no-turn ups, the foreigners, the under 18s, and so on)

Wow, it actually happened.
Next, we ban violent films and books.
Then maybe we get rid of works that make the government look bad.
This is a very slippery slope.

Politician: "hmm PEGI have rated these games as suitable for people of 18+... so therefore NO ONE should be allowed to play them"

Sane Swiss-lander: "but what about people who ARE 18 years old or older, as the very DEFINITION of the 18+ rating that PEGI uses is that the games are suitable for 18 year olds and up"

Politician: "..."

Sane Swiss: "What about censorship? It is one thing to censor things from young children but another thing to censor the media of free adult citizens"

Politician: "..."

Sane Swiss: "What about how this law will completely undermine the rating system and encourage PEGI to give adult rated games a lower rating as an 18+ rating would be an effective ban, which may not be suitable. This draconian law forces the industry to choose between exposing youngsters to more violence or deliver a massive blow to a studio who can spend many years and millions of dollars on a single game, where a ban could ruin them"

Politician: "..."

Sane: "Well, don't you have anything to say?"

Politician: "I didn't think this through, I don't give a crap two ways about video games, all I know is there are a whole lot of old fogies out there who will love me if I ban New things that scare them so I'll be able to cling a hold of power just a little longer. Don't you see, I NEED Votes, and I'll lie, betray and destroy anything to get validation and power. Like the minarets, utterly pointless debate and they mean so much to Muslims but think about all those old conservatives who vote every election without fail, they'd love to deprive the Muslims a part of their temples."

Sane swiss: "Ah, I see. You're a whore"

Politician: "No, more like a pimp. I'm sacrificing what OTHERS have for my OWN gain"

(EDIT: I was asked if people could copy/pasta this and yes, I'd encourage that. Anything to spread the word)

So did they ban the same stuff in movies, tv, music, etc or are games getting the focus there?

More worryingly, Switzerland is in the EU, which Britain has to obey by virtue of the fact we are the bitches of anyone bigger and more powerful than us...
Huh...? If by EU you mean European Union, you would be mistaken, since Switzerland never joined. Also, is this the same Britain that has "opt-out" of several of EU laws and uses Pounds instead of Euros?

Damn it.
I was wanting to move to Switzerland when I grew up, but this just... it's a real kick in the pants.
