I say Barrett because I have absolutely no idea who these people are or why I should care and his name instantly makes me think of this guy:

Indeed captcha. I have none.
Pink Floyd. And David Gilmour could kick Barrett's gun hand ass with his guitar solos.
Syd could take on Barrett with his slide guitar

Now I'm imagining Syd Barrett and David Gilmour having a sword fight with guitars.

Probsbly Gilmour, he played on the couple of Floyd songs that don't bore me to tears when I'm sober.
I usually listen to Barrett while sober, you just gotta let him coluor your brain, with any colour you like

I love them both. In terms of insane genius, Syd beats everyone - but man, Gilmour is my favourite guitarist of all time. Nobody else could make their guitar sing and weep like he could.
Him and George Harrison could just make songs that are so powerful, yet so gentle

I thought that was Hotblack Desiato of the band Disaster Area. They play the usual songs about how a boy meets a girl under a full moon, which inexplicably explodes. Incidentally, when Douglas Adams thought up the band for The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, he was inspired by Pink Floyd's stage shows. And he was good friends with Gilmour.

Considering David Gilmour was on Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, and Wish You Were Here, and I'm not very familiar with most of the work Pink Floyd did with Syd Barrett, I'll have to go with Gilmour.

EDIT: People didn't like The Division Bell?

Roger Waters trashed the album when it was released, but that's understandable. The guy has a raging ego. He's mellowed out, since he had Gilmour guest star with his Wall Tour 2010 at a couple venues. But during his solo career, he was very critical of the band.

The Division Bell sold really well, but in terms of ratings, it is considered one of the weakest Pink Floyd albums. Doesn't stop me from loving it.

Gilmour, easily. He was the better musician and I am a fan of all three eras of Floyd (Barrett era, Gilmour-Waters "Classic" Era and the Post-Waters era".

Gilmour had alot more heart and emotion in his song writing and while Barrett did have that, he tended to go for the more Avant-garde style to his writing, see I like Interstellar Overdrive but it is no way comparable to Echoes or Shine On You Crazy Diamond, they absolutely blow it out of the arena, watch Echoes at Pompeii and then say that that is not one of the greatest songs of all time.

I also love Division Bell though, its got that awesome New-Age influence and contains one of my favourite tracks by Floyd, High Hopes.

If you like Interstellar Overdrive though try Soft Machine, they had the same vain of music for the most part and Robert Wyatt, who you have probably already heard of was a close friend of Pink Floyd.

David Gilmour didn't write the lyrics to "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", I'm pretty sure it was solely Roger Waters, and I think "Echoes" was a group contribution. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

As for the guy who said Roger Waters is a dick or whatever, that really has no effect on whether the music is good or not. He isn't as much of a twat these days, so I think you're the dick in this situation, dwelling on the past and all that.

And as for the question, Syd Barrett. Better songwriter, much more creative, better vocalist, and his solo albums were much more interesting. Gilmour founded the cliche, pretentious guitar solos that are widely used, uncreative and boring. He also single-handedly ruined Pink Floyd in the late 1980's and 1990's.

I am going to go for David Gilmour as my first exposure to Pink floyd was the Dark side of the moon album and I instantly fell in love with it and his guitar playing. I mean, I do love Syd Barrett (Dominoes is an amazing song) but I prefer Gilmour, as I find Barretts psychedelic songs to be a bit much at times.

So Waters holding a grudge way into the 90s doesn't make him a dick? I said he'd mellowed out nowadays, but he left after the band got fed up with him after Waters all but turned them into background performers for his virtuoso career. He was a control freak, and neither side really lived it down for years.

I don't really see how I'm a dick for commenting on how Waters treated his band members thirty years ago. It's not dwelling on the past, its commenting on it. He invited Gilmour to play on his The Wall Tour for god's sake.

Just to point out how much of a dick Waters was: he fired Rick Wright from the band, then hired him back as a non-contributing session musician.

This is the same Rick Wright whose pioneering synth work, jazzy piano chords and beautiful vocal harmonies arguably defined the Pink Floyd sound. Listen to DSOTM, and it's his groundbreaking synth work outs that give the album it's surreal, spacey vibe. Listen to Shine On, and it's that epic, beautiful Gm chord slowly fading in that provides the iconic opening. Listen to Echoes, and its his vocal harmonies that give the song its atmospheric, melancholy feel. he wrote the arrangement for Great Gig In The Sky.

Rick Wright was the man who gave the Floyd their 'space rock' sound, and Waters fired him from the band, then re-hired him as a session guy, just so he wouldn't have to give him any royalties or writing credit. That's how self-centred he was.

I like Waters. He seems to have mellowed out now, and he was always a great lyricist. But even he has admitted that he was a phenomenal **** to the rest of the band at the end of the 70s.
Not to mention that Gilmour was so tired of being passed over for songs they collaborated on that he released two solo albums just so he could get some spotlight that wasn't overshadowed by Waters.
