David Gilmour didn't write the lyrics to "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", I'm pretty sure it was solely Roger Waters, and I think "Echoes" was a group contribution. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.
As for the guy who said Roger Waters is a dick or whatever, that really has no effect on whether the music is good or not. He isn't as much of a twat these days, so I think you're the dick in this situation, dwelling on the past and all that.
And as for the question, Syd Barrett. Better songwriter, much more creative, better vocalist, and his solo albums were much more interesting. Gilmour founded the cliche, pretentious guitar solos that are widely used, uncreative and boring. He also single-handedly ruined Pink Floyd in the late 1980's and 1990's.
So Waters holding a grudge way into the 90s doesn't make him a dick? I said he'd mellowed out nowadays, but he left after the band got fed up with him after Waters all but turned them into background performers for his virtuoso career. He was a control freak, and neither side really lived it down for years.
I don't really see how I'm a dick for commenting on how Waters treated his band members thirty years ago. It's not dwelling on the past, its commenting on it. He invited Gilmour to play on his The Wall Tour for god's sake.
Just to point out how much of a dick Waters was: he fired Rick Wright from the band, then hired him back as a non-contributing
session musician.
This is the same Rick Wright whose pioneering synth work, jazzy piano chords and beautiful vocal harmonies arguably
defined the Pink Floyd sound. Listen to DSOTM, and it's his groundbreaking synth work outs that give the album it's surreal, spacey vibe. Listen to Shine On, and it's that epic, beautiful Gm chord slowly fading in that provides the iconic opening. Listen to Echoes, and its his vocal harmonies that give the song its atmospheric, melancholy feel. he wrote the arrangement for Great Gig In The Sky.
Rick Wright was the man who gave the Floyd their 'space rock' sound, and Waters fired him from the band, then re-hired him as a session guy, just so he wouldn't have to give him any royalties or writing credit. That's how self-centred he was.
I like Waters. He seems to have mellowed out now, and he was always a great lyricist. But even he has admitted that he was a phenomenal **** to the rest of the band at the end of the 70s.
