So, the corporation behind a game about corporations decided to mix things up and use a dubstep artist for their trailer for a game called Syndicate. That artist is named Skrillex, who is a well known dubstep artist. It seems to me that dubstep in general is a growing trend in the gaming industry, especially for games set in the future. Do you, fellow escapists, agree with this trend, or dismiss as a coincidence?

I loved the tune in the trailer and thought it fit perfectly. The recent AC trailer also used the style quite well. That said, I hope to not see/hear it used more than it is. It's already getting near that point where it's just being used because it's the in thing regardless of what it's being used for.

Ya there is a trend brewing and this is bullshit, put in music that fits the game and not just X marketing material.

But with Syndicate that is all there is, they sat down a bunch of marketing people with their spreadsheets of most sellable material and shoved it all into a game, then tape the nearest franchise name over.

My friend likes to say that dub step is a genre created by transformers having sex, so with that in mind, it does fit a futuristic, technologically advanced world, maybe along the lines of cybertrong.

I see dubstep as parallel to metal, both are the extremes of their genres.

Forever ago, rock came about. A while later, metal gained popularity. Metal was pretty much the hardcore sub-genre of rock.

Likewise, electronica came about and got popular. Now later, dubstep is gaining popularity, and it is pretty much the hardcore sub-genre of electronica.

Slight bit of fun, I was burning a dubstep CD when I came across this thread. Klaypex for the win.

Okay for the first time in my life (I'm 25) I officially feel old because I had to look up "dubstep" as I've heard of it before but didn't really know what it was. THANKS OP!

That being said I watched the trailer and I thought the music fit the gameplay really well, especially since I'm pretty sure it's a remix of the original Syndicate's soundtrack.

I'm not much of a fan of dubstep, but that remix of the original soundtrack fit the trailer perfectly.

Ugh, I watched the trailer... and I wanted to like it but I couldn't get past how bad it sounds... it started out okay but than it devolved into the mindless WOMP WOMP WOMP, crap and it sounded terrible... I hate dub step... it makes my ears want to implode upon themselves... I've never heard a dubstep song that I've liked and the majority of it is worse than any pop artist you can name...

Skrillex is awesome, the song fits the mood and style of the game nicely. No idea what's up with people complaining. But then again, this is the internet, where anything is complained about.

As someone who plays Magic: The Gathering, dubstep music and dubstep artists' names strike me as being incredibly Phyrexian.

If I see an album put out by someone calling themselves Xancha I'm getting it.

I thought it sounded horrible, but then I'm old so it's inevitable all new music trends will sound like meaningles noise to me. The Syndicate one did fit in a way though, I'm putting that down to it being a remox of the original. I don't recall hearing anything similar elsewhere though so I don't see how it's a trend. Hopefully it isn't and they won't use any music written after my formulative years which as everyone shou;d know was the best era for music.

Dubstep is the worst abortion of sound to ever exist and I hope it dies off very soon.

Why do they keep making great isometric strategy games into uninspired FPS games?

First X-Com, which looks too much like Bioshock, now Syndicate, which looks too much like Deus Ex...

If I wanted to be a punk, I could do the Fallout: Tactics --> Fallout 3 relation (and say it looks too much like Oblivion) but there's no reason to.

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for it, but at the same time I'm mildly disappointed because I liked the squad-based stuff. :(

I think both song and game are awesome, and they fit together really well.
It looks like Deus Ex, with much more focus on bloodshed and badass ways.

The Frozen Synapse soundtrack is very dubsteppy, worth checking out for anyone interested.

Neither. It's not coincidence but it's far from "trend". There are plenty of games taking place in future without any hint of dubstep.

As for me - i like dubstep. It's not a replacement for any other genre, just a curiosity. Still, intriguing.
