try dosgamesonline; basically you trudge through a bunch of ads to earn 'credits' for which to download old games. system shock 2 is there. keep in mind it will be a pain in the ass to run on a modern PC; but there the solutions are everywhere on google.
It is actually quite easy to make the game run on Vista, in fact it is easier that making the game run on XP.

Well, I have Windows 7. Homeworld was also made in 1999 and works no problem (indeed, it's the only game I've found which runs at all), so I assume SS2 will work?

System Shock 2 was built on Looking Glass Studios' Dark Engine which plays very, very badly on anything above windows 98 and not at all on multi-core machines. IIRC, there are a multitude of problems and hacks and workarounds and patches and voodoo shit you need to do just to get it to run.

I *have* gotten ti running on windows XP on a dual-ccore machine, but it took at least a day of looking up the forums, downloading various patches and tweaks and this was when I had already gone through the process at least once before.

I haven't even attempted it on windows 7 and I doubt it would fare any better.

If you can actually get it, and you can actually get it running, I guarantee you won't regret buying it.

Double Edit: It's a DOS game, and is now considered freeware, so downloading it for free is not illegal.
I wouldn't trust that website as far as I would throw it. It's a Windows game and it certainly does not have freeware status. At best, it has abandonware status, which only means no one will give a shit if you do download it.
On further research you are correct, it is abandonware. The company no longer exists, meaning no one can sue you.
You're wrong. EA owns the System Shock franchise and i think that they would sue pirates without a second thought.
Guess it's not dice then Skiddly Doo, sorry. Maybe one day GoG will have it and we can both play.

You need to register for free, but I don't know if this is legal nor is it the full game or just the demo

There seems to be a misconception that System Shock 2 is a shooter just because it's in the first person perspective, this game is far more akin to a survival horror than an FPS. IMO It's way scarier (or was when it released) than bioshock was.

Unfortunately the game has never been ported to any of the online distribution services. Your only real bet of getting it legally is ebay or amazon.

Well it will at least be easier than on XP since the video codex that runs all the cutscenes are not installed on XP by default but on Vista and Windows 7 it is. I managed to make the game run really well on my Vista pc, it does crash sometimes but not often. Also the game have problems with multicore processors but there is an easy fix for that.

I am suddenly terrified. Why?
Because it's a hard fucking game. Here are two words that will become your mantra:

Preserve. Ammo.

BUT it's also really great and - despite graphics - has aged quite well, methinks.

I'll bear that in mind. I'm not sure how many cores my machine has, but it was a server once. Does that provide any clues?

Oh. I thought he was referring to the forums, not the game.

In that case, BRING IT ON! :p.

So, what with my parents refusing to get me Bioshock or Metro 20333 due to them disapproving of the horror genre (and I didn't even know they were horror, I wanted them for the atmosphere and explorationy bits) I am in need of something to look forward to at christmas. Enter my friends on an IRC server I go to, who recommend me System Shock 2 (apparently, even my comp will be able to run it, since it can run Homeworld).

Now, I need info on this game:

- Legally (ain't there ever gonna be no warez a-taintin' ma machine, thankee very much), where can I get it for my PC? I know it's not on consoles.

- I need to know mundane stuff about it, e.g is there an autosave function? Being used to modern-day FPS games like Halo, I need to know if there's any differences I should be prepared for in SS2. Basic (and perhaps not-so-basic) things that could trip up a newbie to the old FPS like me.

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Wow. If they think that Bioshock & Metro 2033 are horror games, consider getting something besides SS2.

I would recommend getting the Mass Effect games, they are awesome.

Good on you for looking into a game like this, but I have to second the post above, you will get torn apart. I feel quite sorry for you actually, it's a bit like watching a lamb go to the slaughter. It'll be one hell of an adjustment compared to modern stuff! I love that you think that Halo limiting you to two weapons is anything like proper inventory management :p

Ahahahahahahahahaha. The suggestion that some people out there haven't played them makes me lol very hard.

I own both Mass Effects. They are among my favourite games.

Also I didn't realise how much of a horror game SS2 apparently is. Maybe I should get something else.

As I recall, there was a simple batch file you could use to force the game to run on only one core which alwayss fixed that issue.

You can check how many cores you have easily - ctrl-alt-del to bring up task manager, go to processes, right-click, set affinity. It should tell you how many cores you have.

If you can't find the batch file which fixes the game permanently, you can always alt-tab when you hit the main menu and use this approach to deselct all cores but one, but you have to remember to do this every time you run the game.

I may have also overstated the voodoo a bit - TTLG is your source though, there is a dedicated forum for the game and a dedicated thread for fixing issues with running it. Pretty much any issue you come across will have an answer for it there. As I recall, Thief 2 was significantly more temperamental than System Shock 2 so I might be confusing the two.

You should play it. No really. The experience, however it may play out for you, is worth it.

Plus I like the difficulty. Okay maybe it's more frustration than pure undiluted difficulty, but it effing makes you work...*****.

Well, ok.

I liked James Bond Bloodstone, and according to the escapist, its good.

You can probably get it on eBay or somewhere similar. I was lucky enough to stumble upon it for $4 at a second-hand store. Some people just don't appreciate what they have...

If you have a dual-core computer, you'll need to download a mod for it. It was designed for single-core computers, and on dual-core processors it has a tendency to go a bit nuts.

It's a terrifying game, but you won't realize why all at once. Yes, some of the monsters are the stuff nightmares are made of, but none are nearly as bad as SHODAN herself. Seriously, about a third of the way through the game there's a twist which, though perhaps predictable, is presented in an extremely effective, disturbing way. Also, none of the scares are announced. SS2 doesn't necessarily rely on jump-out scares, but things just kind of...happen, whether you're ready for them or not. You'll also find yourself terrified of things that you shouldn't logically find scary at all. While we're on the subject, no matter how polite and affable they may seem to be, don't trust protocol droids. EVER.

Combat is a *****, and that's consistent from start to finish. I recommend starting with the tech class first time through. Psi is a lot of fun, but it's hard to get the hang of. Marine makes the combat a lot easier and more fun, but the lack of secondary skills will hold you back endgame.
