System Shock 3

I was browsing through Wikipedia, and decided to check the System Shock 2 article, just for shits and giggles. I was kind of amazed when I saw that they had referenced an article that talked about a possible System Shock 3. Admittedly, this particular article was from 2006, but they made specific mention to the fact that the old developers were currently working on BioShock, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't confusion on that part.

The real thing that made me pay attention was the fact that apparently EA had renewed the copyright [http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=132172] on the intellectual property that is System Shock. That really speaks volumes about their intentions for the future, I think (though, admittedly, it is EA, so for all we know it might've been an error on their part).

I guess the question that I want to pose to the group is: Do you think that another System Shock will appear in the future? If so, how long do you think it'll take them to develop/release it?

(Also, just 'cause: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=143616

Article of Ken Levine bad-mouthing EA. Way to go Ken.)

EDIT: If you have played through the original System Shock and it's sequel, System Shock 2, then you would know the story ends on a pretty solid note. If someone did make a sequel, though, what sort of stuff would you like to see in? What sort of plot would you be expecting?

With a name as big as System Shock, EA will renew copyright forever just in case, even if they had no intention of developing it. After all, it costs next to nothing to do. From the POV of the person responsible, the only way to fail hard is if the copyright is allowed to expire and *then* it turns out the company would like to make a SS3.

So this doesn't inform us in the slightest about if and when a SS3 might appear.

Congrats to Levine for speaking his mind.

I figured BioShock WAS System Shock 3. Or maybe it was a remake of System Shock 2.

Which means that BioShock 2 will actually be System Shock 3.

Who knows what the heck is going on. No wonder they renewed the copyright.

Welcome to the world of arbitrary numbering. Only in gaming will you find such series as Resident Evil, a series which has at least ten games, proclaiming their newest title as Resident Evil 5.

Sometimes my brain hurts trying to follow such things.

Back on topic, though: If you've played through the original System Shock and System Shock 2, then you'll know the story kind of ends on a solid note. If they did make a third one, however, what do you think they would do? Or, I guess a better question would be: What would you like them to do?

I honestly hope that System Shock 3 is never made. With the recent trend in gaming tending to be more user friendly and action oriented, there's no way a new game could be anywhere near as good as the original.

It would be another Deus Ex: Invisible War (which I have never played, but I have heard things...)

Another overrated FPS like bioshock was? no thanks
I belived it was interesting and a new endevour inside of things like halo 3, COD 4, and all the series continuing there formula. It was a new idea and the only scary part was basically the splicers, the big daddys the first few times, and Stienmen. Though I enjoyed its plot it could have used a few tweaks.

They're both freeware, now that Looking Glass Studios has shut it's doors (long, long ago). Here's some links to System Shock [http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?gameid=1114] and System Shock 2 [http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?gameid=3924]. They're really old-school, with graphics from the era of the original Half-Life, so, if you're a graphics junkie, you won't be impressed, but the gameplay is ridiculously amazing.

I mean the gameplay shooting was a snorefest in bioshock
If a FPS cant make shooting shit fun then its boring
thats why i hate valve for everythign except L4D
Well, first off, Valve didn't develop either of the System Shock games, or BioShock, but I get what you're saying. Regardless, though, that's a pretty narrow-minded approach to gaming, I think. I mean, if you like plain FPS games like Halo and Call of Duty, where the only point is to kill things, then good for you! I certainly don't mind a killfest occasionally myself.

But to bad mouth amazing games like Half-Life, BioShock and System Shock, all because they try to do more than just copy-paste the repetitive run'n'gun formula of Halo (which is to say: give the player a gun, insert enemy, use gun to kill enemy, repeat ad infinitum)? I'm sorry, but that's just rather silly.

Personally, I think it would be pretty sweet to see System Shock 3 get made, if only to see if they could carry over the impressive story, gameplay and horror aspects from System Shock 2 into this generation of graphics.

This is my biggest concern about Beyond Good and Evil 2, which Ancel has confirmed as being more Casual friendly. And I thought the first one was pretty easy.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

No. Just no. If they make a System Shock 3, I have severe doubts that it will be able to live up to the first two. I doubt anything will get made, but unless there's a bloody miracle, I think that a sequel will just be sick and wrong...

I don't care how bad it might be, all I know is I want System Shock 3.

That wasn't supposed to rhyme.

Bioshock is just a spiritual successor to system shock 3. Something that takes place in the past underwater can't possibly be a real sequel to something that takes place in the future on a space ship.

Leave System Shock 2 alone, after putting it on Steam and making it more accessible on newer computers.

How good is System Shock 1? I've never played it or ever heard anyone talking about it.
