Actually writing notes on a tablet is really easy.

It's just a silly fad the electronics business is going through right now. It'll be over in a few years.
Just like laptops were thought to be a fad also, lets go back even farther when the desktop was a fad or consoles were a fad, the sales numbers indicated that this is not a fad but a new niche computer market that is doing really fucking well.
you do have a small point. It will probably end up replacing netbooks if that is the case due to being around the same price and having access to more, but they are still not a "portable computer replacement" by a long shot.
How exactly do tablets have "access to more" than netbooks? They have access to less! It's like the difference between a smartphone and a laptop, and then saying that the smartphone has more because it can make calls and has "apps."
What don't they have access to? I have a Ipad i got for fathers day and so far it does everything I have ever needed it to do including all the shit people say it cannot do including flash.
Programming environments. I can run Eclipse, MySql, Tomcat Server and about a hundred other development tools on my netbook, no chance on a tablet.
you got me there, but most people don't buy netbooks for programming. Most people buy it for portability and internet usage.
I don't want to get off topic here, but this is starting to tunnel a bit.

you got a point. Back to tablets..... I still think they are better for a "mainstream" enjoyment over netbooks.

This article is not as interesting as I thought it would be. I was thinking "Paracetamol vs Ibuprofen! Fight!"

That would be more interesting. Why don't you get on that and show us the results?

I'm not a huge fan of tablets, I tend not to use them, or get really bored with them. I prefer a traditional PC or Laptop.

Meh, I prefer the HP tablet laptops that we have at work. Want a laptop with a keyboard, great it's one of those! Want to use it as a table, great, just turn the screen around, fold it down and it's a tablet!

So an iPad is a tablet...? I just though it was a big iPod touch... I had no idea...

I personally think tablets are ridiculous if you're not a visual artist of some kind. But I also think they're a transitional technology.

The vast majority of people only need a computer to browse the web, manage and view/play their audio-visual media content, basic word processing and spreadsheets, and maybe play some simple games. Tablets are close to being the device that can do all that while remaining inexpensive and easy to use. When we get that device, the only people who will still use PCs at home will be coders/programmers, people doing higher-end audio-visual work, dedicated computer hobbyists/hackers, and hardcore gamers.

I'm very against Apple- mostly because all the technology they make has stupid names ( Ipod, Ipad, what next? Iped? super scooter that plays music?) But im quite intrigued by the tablet- although i'll likely buy one from a different corporate media giant, it looks like a good way to write notes on the fly.
You know what's easier to write notes on the fly? A keyboard.
...Or paper and pen.

I actually love the idea of tablets. I don't think they are a replacement for a laptop or desktop computer but it does have amazing potential in my book. For instance:

1. Magazines. Neither the nook nor the kindle have the ability (as far as I know) to show all the media content of a magazine. Being able to subscribe to a magazine and also see photographs and/or watch multimedia is a great thing.

2. Replacing the clipboard. Imagine going to doctors office and as he explains procedure, he can show you a video or photos to illustrate what he's saying. Or a construction foreman being able to have interactive 3d blueprints and such.

3. The people who use computers for nothing more than music and internet. This is small (could be cheap one day) and fulfill basic needs.

4. I've seen a lot of art directors and producers use Ipads. A lot of interactive info plus storage of files, plus apps that can control a few things.

So the tablet is pretty useful in my opinion. I don't think its a replacement for a computer, and not good for games and programs but does have its uses.

Here is a link showing how a Ipad was useful in creating the 'Twisted Metal PS3' trailer:

I never understood why tablets had to suddenly become computers. Netbooks/smart phones are smaller and easier to carry around, laptops are stronger. What niche do they fill?

I don't need pointless apps. I... I just wanna draw!

Oh, my Wacom Bamboo Fun, how I love thee...

And people who have computers because not having one would just be weird.
