I know this isnt a super popular topic on the Escapist but I'll try anyway.

Does anyone here like gaming with tabletop miniatures?

I tried getting a conversation going about it with another Kickstarter but that thread died kinda quick. So I'm going ta try again.

Who here uses miniatures for gaming?

Anyone here paint them?

And if the answer is yes to any of the above questions here is a Kickstarter you might like.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/centerstageminis/tome-of-horrors-complete-28mm-heroic-scale-miniatu

As you can see from this Kicktraq the goal has been reached and then some.

So yeah. Anyone here collect and/or paint gaming miniatures like this? I can't really be the only guy here who does that can I?

Probably not but sometimes it feels like it.

Dude. Does no one want to talk about tabletop miniatures? Really no one?

I personally have a massive collection. Thousands of D&D miniatures and a lot of Reaper brand miniatures as well. I've even got some really valuable ones.

Dude I can hear crickets chirping in this thread. Bros back me up on this.

Well... you did create this thread at 3AM EST >.>

OT: My group always plays with minis. One of the guys I play with is actually well known in Georgia for being one of the best mini painters we have. He's won several competitions and game stores and the like. I love minis, but not every game requires them. Some systems are actually better without them.

Considering Pathfinder's emphasis on unit positioning though... yeah, we use minis 100% of the time for Pathfinder.

Eh, I don't find miniatures that special. I can play a game with narration only, although maybe for more combat oriented stuff, I suppose a map and something to show which is where would be OK. But I've never really found miniatures and custom maps worth that much - I'm quite happy just having coins and random bits and pieces on a piece of paper with quickly sketched lines. Or if I really need something formal, a generic tileset (you know -the ones that just have tiles, not rivers and roads and meadows and stuff) plus some tokens that can be either colourful "pebbles" or printed pictures of stuff is what I'd go after - way cheaper and you can get way more of them way more easily. A friend of mine is using chess pieces - with pawns being generic mooks (skeletons, goblins, whatever as the case may be for a battle - basically minions in D&D 4) and other figures being more powerful enemies (rooks for archers, knights for magic users and king/queen for the leader, for example) which works fine.

Well yeah. Reaper. More DnD/pathfinder character models than you can shake a stick at. I have a few from the fantasy and sci fi ranges.

Ummm.... er... I like the way you can see the style of fantasy art change across time in their back catalogue...

I sort of collect certain pre 1992 citadel miniatures. The Perry Twins do good historical stuff. Infinity do nicely sculpted stuff, although Masamune Shirow would like his designs back.

That's all for wargaming though. I wouldn't use models for pnp.

Yeah classic is awesome.

Did you check out that Kickstarter I linked to above? All their minis have a classic look. And we could use some good buzz over there since this weekend has kinda sucked for us.

I like the cardboard pawns, cheap an easy to store. I got two of the Bestiary box and realized how much space an money would be required to have all those figures in pewter.

edit:
At first I thought that kick-starter said "Tomb of Horrors" and I was like, "Must Have!".

It does have a flumph, which is a plus point, however for me personally there isn't anything there, I didn't get into DnD enough to have any feelings of nostalgia for the various monsters, I buy a bit of Reaper's stuff primarily because I like fantasy/sci-fi character art and for better unit/character variance in games from The Great Satan.

I assume you've made a post about this on RPG.net and CoolMiniorNot?

Captch: mimsy borogoves... kickstarter needs more Jabberwock.

Dude I love reaper too. They make tons of great stuff. I love their pathfinder line since i really like the pathfinder art style.

The reasno I'm excited for this Kickstarter though is that a lot of those monsters have appeared in the Pathfinder Bestiaries 2 and 3 and have no miniature counterparts. I'm a big fan of evil outsiders so I'm excited about the Demodands, Daemons and Froghemoth. It is crazy hard to find a Froghemoth mini and I really like using those guys.

And yeah us backers are trying to get the word out. Even if you don't want to get in on it, just telling someone else you think might would help a ton. Or posting a link to it. Just copy paste mine.

Dude you woudln't be the first to make that mistake. Tomb of Horrors is an awesoem adventure.

As for pawns I just could never get into them. They just don't have the gravitas for me. Pawns just don't feel as menacing as miniatures. But that's just me dude, no criticism on you.

Like I said, if you know anyone else who might be into this, please spread the word. W'ere all working hard to get more backers and every little bit helps.

Well i like to paint them but to get enough to play any of the good games gets a bit pricey and requires more people open to it than me and my friend. However i love Reaper miniature and their Bones line is great if anyone wants to try their hand at painting!

Dude Bones are pretty sweet. Still waiting for mine to ship.

Some people also like to buy and paint them just cause its a fun hobby. I've painted up lots of minis I havent had a chance to use properly yet just because they look cool.

For fights my guys just use a drywipe board. Just their character's first 3 letters are written on a spot. Bad guys get the same if they're leaders and such. Regular bads simply get numbers next to their x so I can keep track of who they've attacked. Don't use rulers when they move, just guess a general distance, wipe and re-mark.
