So apparently Namco just announced that they're going to be rereleasing of Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World in an HD collection for the PS3 in celebration of Tales of Symphonia's 10th anniversary. Not only that but it's been announced that's definitely going to be released in the the US and Europe in early 2014. Which is good to know early because it's always hard to be sure when any particular Tales of game will be released in the west. It's being released under the title Tales of Symphonia: Unisonant Pack in Japan, and possibly Tales of Symphonia Chronicles in the west.

It's apparently going to use the PS2 version, which included several extra events, attacks and animations, but was never released in the west, as a base. So it will include all the extra stuff we never got here on the GameCube version, plus apparently they're even adding new costumes and attack cut-ins. They're also apparently going to include new costumes for all of the characters from other Tales of games with the two revealed so far being Lloyd in a Guy costume and Genis in a Luke costume (both from Tales of the Abyss).

So what do you guys think of this? I know Tales of Symphonia is one of my favorite games of all time, so I'm really looking forward to this and it's great to hear a western release has already been announced. I haven't really played Dawn of the New World, I've heard it isn't quite as good. I'm still looking forward to being able to play it though.

Eh. You take the bad with the good I guess. At least we get the Symphonia rerelease, and you probably won't have to play the sequel if you don't want to.

Well what I am hoping is that they release both on PSN so I can just buy the first one alone.

That would be pretty nice if they did, but right now they've only announced that they're releasing them together as a collection. They might still release them separately on PSN though. Even if they released them separately though, I think I would buy the collection anyway.

Well, I am planning to get a cheap PS3 for some games like Kingdom Hearts HD reMIX, so I might add this to the list!
I pretty much only got my PS3 so I could play Tales of Graces, but now with this and Tales of Xillia my PS3 is basically going to become my Tales of platform.

You should definitely get it though! Tales of Symphonia was an awesome game!

Oh yeah, gotta get Tales of Graces and a few others (like Ni No Kuni) once I get a PS3. My sister has Symphonia for gamecube, I could always play that.

I currently have Tales of the Abyss 3D on my backlog (I haven't reached the mine town yet)
Yeah, you could always play the Gamecube version. I still have the Gamecube version too but I'm interested enough in the new content for the PS3 version that I'm definitely going to get it,.

That reminds me though. I have yet to finish the 3DS Tales of the Abyss. I've gotten a little farther than you it seems, but I still still have quite a bit to go. I'll need to do that soon. Thanks for reminding me.

I want to keep playing, but Devil Survivor: Overclocked and several other games distracted me...

I have to get back to that...
Same thing happened to me, except it was Kid Icarus that distracted me followed later by Fire Emblem. God those games are addicting. Soon the new Animal Crossing will probably be distracting me too.

I have never played a Tales game before, so this definitely peaks my interests. I know they are ARPGS and that they don't really have any connecting stories (like the FF series right? Except for games that are specifically prequels/sequels to certain installments), but that's pretty much it.

If I see it around, I'll think about picking it up!

I've heard of this game before, but I've never had a chance to play it since I never owned a gamecube.

Aside from the fact that I think I've heard it's an RPG I don't really know anything about it. What's it like? Is it any good?

If you've ever wanted to get into the Tales series, this game would be a great place to start!

You're right in that they are like that Final Fantasy series in that aside from the game titles and some recurring elements most of the games are unrelated. Strangely though Tales of Symphonia doesn't follow the trend in that it's actually a distant prequel to the first game in the series: Tales of Phantasia. But you don't really have to know anything about Phantasia or any of the other games in the series to enjoy Symphonia.

Tales of Symphonia is one of my favorite games of all time so I'd definitely recommend you pick it up if you get the chance!

It's considered really good by most people. And it's gotten pretty good reviews on most sites.
Like Xathos said it's an action RPG where most of the titles in the series don't really have any connection to each other besides some recurring elements. The series as a whole is known for it's unique real time battle system where each character can move around the battlefield and where different kinds of attacks can be performed by using direction and button combinations. The series is also known for it's well developed characters and worlds and engaging plots.

Why don't they just release the English PS3 version of Vesperia?
Probably because they've already released a version here for current gen consoles and they don't think it would be an adequate return on their investment to release another.
In fact I'm pretty sure the only reason they released a PS3 version in Japan is because the 360 version didn't sell because almost no one in Japan owned a 360. Thus the Japanese PS3 version got them many more sales in Japan whereas there are many more people in the US and Europe who own 360s and thus, as they see it, we have no need for a PS3 version.

Also, they're making this Tales of Symphonia collection to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Tales of Symphonia. So releasing an English version Vesperia, which has already had an English release, just doesn't seem like a very fitting celebration for Tales of Symphonia.

*Edited to fix some factual errors in the post

When I found out about this I thought it was cool. I haven't played Phantasia but I did look at the wiki and loved how there was some similarites in events. Such as both games you visit and elf village and your half-elf companion can't enter. Although if I recall correctly, it said in Phantasia the main character or at least a character reacted much different then Lyold and co did in Symphonia.
