I don't do much with my computer besides Firefox, Skype, games, and Microsoft Word, but I'd like to know what needs to be running in Task Manager. So, I need help with clearing some stuff out.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A665, with MS Windows 7 64-bit, Intel Core i3 CPU M 370 at 2.40GHz, 4.0GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics--if this helps at all.

I've done that a few times, I guess I just have to learn what I should remove from start-up and what function they serve. But thank you--for a moment, I forgot about MSconfig.

X = Kill to death without consequence (well... the consequence will be that the program turns off, but Windows will be fine. Explorer.exe is in there as a sort of a joke :))
✓ = Ignore
? = No idea. A lot of them sound like optional memory-hogs installed by hardware manufacturers, but I don't want to guess.

lol, I've seen what happens when I close Explorer.exe, but thank you for this. I'll turn these off and see how it goes.

Ending explorer doesn't actually do much. You can just start up again straight away and sometimes it's good for making it release a load of memory, but obviously it's quite useful to keep it on :p

It is on Windows NT systems. We were(and still are) using an XP system which has a system idle process. Basically because a CPU can never really do NOTHING, NT systems put in a system idle process which runs when the computer has nowhere better to put the CPU cycles. If you have more interest, Google can explain it far better than I can.

I know what the System Idle Process is -_-

Incidentally, I was bored at work today, so I opened up an XP Virtual Machine and tried to do as much damage as I could with Task Manager. It turns out that it doesn't even let you shut down the really vital processes, and the only negative effect I got was when I killed svchost, causing some important background service to fail and restart the machine.

LOL,( I stand corrected ) Maybe she ended svchost :p, I wasn't actually there when she did it, and for some reason the computer wouldn't actually re-boot, it just froze right at the beginning. I asked her what she did and she said that she just opened task manager and ended the first process on the list, which i assumed was the system idle process.
Also, now that I think about it, it was Win98. But you'd think they wouldn't let you end it 98 either.
hmmm, now i don't know what she did

No-one ever will. Such is the way of errors produced by ignorant relatives.
