http://www.space.com/12963-tatooine-planet-2-suns-star-wars-kepler-16b.html

It's a real-life Tatooine. A spectacle made popular by the "Star Wars" saga ? a planet with two suns ? has now been confirmed in space for the first time, astronomers revealed.

Scientists using NASA's Kepler space telescope captured details of a giant planet in orbit around the pair of binary stars that make up the Kepler-16 system, which is about 200 light-years away.

It really is amazing when Science fiction becomes science fact.
What do you make of this?

That's gotta be hot. Also, the article neglects to say if it's a gas giant (Which I'm sure it must be at that size), so you wouldn't have deserts or mob boss slugs on it. Oh well.

Didn't we already know that systems with two stars are common and exist? Or is it amazing that we found a planet purely made up desert?

Either way, colonize it and name it Tallarn.
We've known about binary star systems for a while, but this is the first planet we've found in such a system.

No, it's the fact that we found a binary system with a planet in it, which was debated on whether or not it would not be possible, due to gravitational perturbations.

even if the planet isn't a gas gient the gravity involved would make life for any Earth-emenating colonists difficult. I'm sure everyone already knows this but were tuned to a pretty specific range of gravitational force. to little and we lose bone density too much and cardiopulmanery function is strianed.

Cool! Personally, I want them to find Arrakis...then we can watch 3 Houses suddenly try to war over it (4 if you want to go non-Canon, hooray for House Ordos, they were always my favorite)

So, by "planet like Tattoine" means "planet orbiting two suns"? Why don't they just say "planet orbiting two suns"? Apart from that, it'd be completely different from Tattoine.

Tallarn was a much nicer place until the HH changed things.

Binary stars are awesome. If I were a space overlord, I'd build a house-planet to orbit one. I'd MAKE IT HAPPEN.

If you can't buy your way out of trouble, hire so many mercenaries that no one remembers what it was that you did wrong.

Well, untill it has little men in brown hoods, green tentacle headed slave girls, and giant gangster slugs, I'll still be waiting, but this is a step in the right direction.
The green tentacle save girls are not actually native to tatooine. Their native planet, if memory serves me correctly, rotates with one side facing the sun at all times.
....
I'm so nerdy it hurts sometimes.

OT: Sounds cool, however it's highly unlikely life can develop there for a multitude of reasons.

I cant even imagine what the planet would be like to live one with two suns.
I can.......Tatooine (just kidding I know what you mean)

I guess no one would have gotten the reference if they said K-Pax

Didn't that planet from pitch black have two suns?
The whole point being that at that point on the planet there was only like 24 hours every 22 years that both suns are set. Or a double eclipse or something.
And they managed to somehow crash just as that happened. Retarded luck science winning again.

Sounds cool but I burn and freckle. (Sad considering I am mostly Asian.) Call me when they find a Naboo like planet.

nah it was 3 stars and it went black like once every 51 years or something somehow i havent seen that movie in ages it was soft sci-fi masquerading as the harder stuff :)
also i never understood how a species like the raptors could evolve like that on a planet with those conditions

but anyway thats pretty interesting pitty that gravity will be so high that setting fot on it will squash any normal human
