I've not gotten any tatoos yet. I got 3 criteria:
Has to be concealable (ie. not on face, neck or hands)
Has to be something that I can't stop liking, so I won't regret it at any time (ie. not band or movie related, not some teenage faux rebellious thing like a barcode)
Has to have some personal meaning behind it (ie. not just "thought it looked nice", not something generic)

The one idea that I have thought about which I am genuinely considering was a map of the world on my back, with the countries that I had visited coloured in. Thats the only thing so far that has fulfilled the three criteria.

On the other hand, I had a friend who was planning on getting one, but when they discussed it with their neighbor, a holocaust survivor, they immediately didn't want one any more. The neighbor told them that when they were in the camps, they were forced to get tattoos of their number. They now find the idea of people doing that to themselves out of choice highly distasteful. The fact that some people feel that way about tattoos really puts me off getting one.
I agree with the personal meaning thing. My tattoos mean a lot to me and signify a change in my general outlook on life. Some of my friends that have tattoos just got them because. I spent a year planning and designing my tattoo and then left it for 6 months. If I didn't like the design in 6 months, I wasn't going to like the tattoo for life.

But I don't regret them at all. In fact, I feel a little bit more complete :)
Well for me, if I did the map idea, it would be a bit sparse at the moment, so I am going to wait until it is a bit more full before I get it. In other words, it could be at least a year or 2 before I get it, which I think is more than enough time to go back on my decision.

I have a double piercing in my left ear (Two rings about half an inch apart), and in all honesty that is the only piercing I've only ever really wanted. I do want to get a small tattoo one day, which I'm planning to be a quote that has inspired me.

Welcome to the Escapist by the way :) I'm also a new poster, but very long time lurker/viewer!
Thanks and same, this is the first forum I've joined in a long time!

That being said, I don't think I'd get a piercing for the sake of it, I just don't see the appeal.

I'm the opposite. A lot of my friends think it's strange that I love the pain so much but oh well. I love just getting peirced (if I have the money)

Yeah, that sounds like an interesting tattoo. Lol, but I think I'm fascinated with it because, well, 1. it's different and unique and 2. that I've just recently got over an intense phobia of Maps. Plus, there are always ways to upgrade and add to tats.

I have one stud in my ear, I may get more eventually but I'm not in any rush right now. I would like tattoos but 2 things are stopping me, price as I've heard they can be quite expensive and what my family would think. I know that sounds kind of lame but my Grandad said that he would write my cousin out of the will if she got any tattoos, I thought best not to say anything.

Aye, I know. My tattoo set me back by £180 and that was with a discount.

It sucks that some people are so strict about them :( My aunty wasn't pleased when I got mine and my Granny was worried I'd turn into a tattooed woman because I got one lol

That's why I got my magpies on my forarms. Personally, I wanted people to see my tattooes if I got them but realistically I knew some employers can be a bit iffy with them.

so the forearm was my half way house. :) I can wear short top and roll up shelves if I want to show them and they're till easily covered. also, if push comes to shove. Special stage make up can be used.

I used to have my ear pierced, but I took it out one day and I lost it.

And to this very day, I've never found where my ear ring went.
It probably fell down a vent or something.

I don't plan on getting any more piercings, but I might get a tattoo.

:( Awwww... I hate it when the balls fall out my ball closure rings. Still haven't learned not to play with them.

Any ideas on a tattoo?

I find piercings (especially lip piercings) to be attractive on women (especially scene chicks) that are already attractive (it adds to the attractiveness), but i don't think i would ever get one myself. It would not look good on me, and I simply have no desire for one.

Tattoos on the other hand, I'm not sure. i find highly visible/trashy tattoos to be turnoffs on women, but i don't mind small, relatively hidden, ones on women that are in good taste. I, myself, have only really considered getting a quote tattooed on my back. "I do not agree with what you have to say, but i will defend to the death your right to say it". Of course, I'm too big of a wimp to get something like that done so it will probably never happen.

Haha, same. But the reverse. I think guys with peircings are just... yum. Especially lips and tongue.

The only tattoos I'm really "oooo :(" about are tramp stamps. Not a good look for anyone haha.

I don't have any tattoo's, I'd like to get one or two however. I just can't decide on what I want, and I'm not just gonna get one as a "spur of the moment" thing, because I'll most likely regret it.

I do however have 2 piercings. My left eyebrow, and the left side of my lower lip.
I plan on getting more as well, I just don't know what else I want to get pierced at the moment.
I will probably end up getting another one of my lip, so I have whats called "Spider-bites".

Forgive the poor quality, I do believe I was drunk at the time. But yeah, I had three eyebrow bars until I was nearly 18, I just sport the one now. I have a long chest tattoo too.

I love me some body modification.

Oooh, Spider bites. Nice! And by judging by your profile picture you'd suit it.
I really want more peircings but I also want to give blood so I'm waiting until May before I get any more done.
