I was thinking about getting a tattoo. I don't know what yet, but I was leaning towards either the bioshock chains on the wrist or maybe a tf2 something on my shoulder. I was wondering how many of you escapists have gotten a tattoo and regretted it. Also, if any of your employers have ever given you grief about it being visible. My employer doesn't care, but I don't plan on working there forever.
Or any good tattoo stories. Those should be fun.

I've never seriously thought about getting a tattoo, but if I did, it would be of the neck dataports from Ghost in the Shell.

I don't have one, I may get one someday, not sure yet.

What I will say is that you should decide what you want, instead of deciding "I want a tattoo". Pick an image first, then consider getting it as a tattoo. Just wanting one will likely leave you regretting it afterwards.

Pretty much what he said.
I may get one someday in the future...

I don't have a tattoo but everyone I know who has one got it because it meant something to them. Do you have some of the characteristics of a TF2 character? In 50 years, are you going to still want chains on your wrist? If you do, then I say go for it.

I have one tribal on my back and I need to go in and get it darkened. I've been slacking because I also am trying to come up with a new design in honor of my daughter. Since she was born on Valentines day I'm going to do something with a heart locket (heart on a chain) but it's hard to decide exactly how I want it.

Tattoo's kick ass, just make sure to think long and hard (3+ months) about any design you want. Maybe have somebody draw it on you in permamnent marker and spend some time considering it. Too many of my friends have either had to get tattoo's covered with better designs or go with laser removal (which is terrible).

For the love of God, don't get anything on your wrist. I don't want to have to hate you.

I've been sort of wanting to get the Rebel Alliance logo on my right shoulder, but I want to give it a LOT of time to brew before seriously getting it. Permanent is FOREVER. I don't want to look at it in twenty years and hate myself for it.

I dont have one yet, but I may get one soon-ish.

I'm thinking a red and black nautical star, but I'm not sure where. Maybe on the underside of my bicep, or my back.

I'll probably get more than that as I get older, but I wont just get them for the hell of it. They'll have to mean something or look like they will still be acceptable when I'm old and wrinkly haha

I made a decision a while ago.
If I ever get a tattoo, it has to be something I will regret for the rest of my life. No cool designs. No deep meanings.

Just cocks everywhere.

Ok, I was thinking about getting a tattoo and made myself 3 rules...

1. Has a personal story behind it, not just a meaningless (or "edgy") symbol
2. Something that I am unlikely to regret (remembering that tastes can change)
3. Concealable place just in case that I do regret it

Alternatively:

Could you explain it to...
1. Your mother?
2. Your future employer?
3. Your future wife?
4. Your friends in an old folks home?

I would say that the Bioshock chains thing is a damn stupid idea. Firstly, how long do you think you will like Bioshock for? Consider how many things you liked once and don't like any more. Now imagine you had them tattooed on yourself. Do you think you will still like it in 10 years? 20 years? 40 years? Its like those people that get the names of their girlfriends/boyfriends tattooed on them, then break up. It fails all 3 of my rules.
What are you going to do if Team Fortress 3 is released and it has different symbols?

Just remember that "Nothing lasts forever" is very ironic for a tattoo.

The one tattoo idea that I had which I had which passes all the rules was getting a map of the world tattooed on my back, and colouring in every country that I have visited, like a life long to do list. I wouldn't do it until its a bit more full to start with, so I've got a couple of years at least to think it over.

I'd suggest that if you're getting a tattoo, you get one of something that you won't regret, it's gonna stay with you for a long time.

Upper shoulder is the best place for one imo and easy to cover up if your employer doesn't like it - I doubt you'll be wearing wifebeaters to work :p

Bioshock chains on the wrist, whilst a little cliche, is fucking awesome.
Or this would be pretty cool to get on my shoulder:
I don't know if I'd ever want a tattoo enough to permanently mark my skin though. I'd have to be pretty damn certain.

Don't get wrist tattoos, seriously.

I have one on the inside of my left wrist which actually means something to me and couldn't have gone anywhere else but most of the people I know who have something similar just have them for the hell of it.

Plus they're -really- hard to conceal if you're working somewhere more conservative in the future.

That sounds awesome, maybe you could work her name into the chain somehow? (I'm not very arty though so I can't think how you would do it)

Agreed. I drew mine on with a ballpoint pretty much every day for a year to get used to it. If you can't/don't want to do that then get a picture of it. Put the picture somewhere safe and look at it again in 6 months or so to see if it really is as great as you remember.

I have a few, and I'm actually getting my half-sleeve extended on friday. I don't regret mine, and I don't think I ever will, as they're more art than 'a tattoo'.

I will say though, having the mindset of wanting a tattoo but not sure what of yet is a bad way to go. I know many people who have said the same and out of haste choose something really stupid, like their initials, or tiny, shitty looking scribbles. Once you find something you like, mull it over for a month or two, and if you still like it then go for it. Also go for a good artist, It's better to spend too much than too little with something that stays with you for life.

I'd recommend getting it done as a henna thing for a while beforehand, see how you like it and see what others' reactions to it would be if you got it done permanently. I have a few that I would like to get, but I can never decide just how I want it. OCD will do that to you. :)

I intend to get a couple of tattoos in my life-time. First thing though is to get the Sign of the Hammer on my right shoulder. Manowar is my religion. \m/

I recommend henna first for getting used to the idea, and place it somewhere where it can't be seen if you dress nicely.
