Without actually knowing the guy or the situation, and just going from what the article said, if he's any kind of a regular teacher and beats kids or is enough of a douchebag to seem like he would, the class might have flat out lied about it just to get him sacked.
I know there were definitely kids in my classes that deserved a fucking beatdown in the hallway for mouthing off or being dipshits, so that part doesn't surprise me TOO much (although it's obviously still unacceptable for a teacher to do), and I also had several classes where every student would swear before a court that a teacher did something he didn't just because we didn't like him.
Typically when someone snaps like this and loses control, they at least fess up to what they did. If they play along with the whole "what the fuck was I thinking?" charade, the consequences are usually less painful, because everyone agrees with them on it. If they're trying to say "No, I didn't masturbate in the hallway outside my classroom after I beat up a student, I have no idea what you're talking about" it kinda raises questions - especially if he had an entire class worth of students that could be witnesses.
No idea what actually happened, fucked up story either way - but if he's enough of a douchebag to beat up a student, I bet there are students vengeful enough to lie to get him punished.
