I recently downloaded TF2 on Steam, but I keep getting some really bad lag issues, where every 10-20 seconds the game will lag really badly for about 5 seconds, but then go back to normal again for another 10-20 secs. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this issue? It's running on Vista, and my system has 3071 MBs of RAM.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Check your internet connection, or maybe it's your graphics card. Are you only playing on a certain type of server?

You took most of the words out of my mouth!

Try checking internet connection and turning your graphics options down. Team Fortress 2 is fairly forgiving, so unless you have a very underpowered PC or an iffy internet connection, it shouldn't be too hard to get it running properly.

TF2 mostly very Processor demanding, and having a less a 3.0GHz single core is a bad idea. What is your Processor may I ask?

I used to have this problem. With every game. I was frustrated enough to open up the computer to find a fix. Found so much fucking dust. But once it was dusted good, it started running like normal again.

Try dusting the inside of your computer.

Alright, the graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M, and the internet connection is usually fine, works well when I play online on my Xbox 360. One problem I have found though, is that I have 20.9 mb of space left on my C: drive :S do you think that might be a problem?

Well the graphics isn't too bad, but the Hard drive is definetely going to be struggling with the lack of space. Are you running on a laptop by any chance? Also still waiting for what your Processor model is.

EDIT: Actually that graphics card isn't that powerful at all looking at the specs. You could do a lot worse, but that isn't very good. I highly suggest that you turn down your graphics settings, and try running in DirectX 8 mode to improve performance. It will look like crap but I'd prefer performance over looks anyday.

Ok, also the Processor is a AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53, and thanks Stoic raptor, I'll try that soon. Will that include opening up my computer though?

Hard Drive space won't affect the game itself.

If you're playing on a laptop I'd turn down the settings a little (reason I thought it was a laptop was because of the GFX card)

I'd recommend you get a can of compressed air and give the vents a blast and clear out any dust.

TF2 is a fairly light game to run, but if you have a processor slower than 2Ghz then I think you might have a few problems.

Yeah, it's a laptop. I've tried clearing space many times, but I'm finding it hard to find things to delete to free up space

Do you think a hairdryer would do for clearing out the dust?

These are the recommended specs for TF2:

Recommended: Pentium 4 processor (3.0GHz, or better), 1GB RAM, DirectX® 9 level Graphics Card, Windows® Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection.

You cover everything aside from the Processor power, because your total Processing power is 2.89 GHz, and even though that TF2 supports Multicore processors, 2.89 GHz simply isn't enough to handle everything that's going on, including all the Particle Effects and Physics, coupled with your quite low graphics card. All I can suggest again is turning everything down graphics wise, including your DirectX level (Just google TF2 DirectX 8 and you'll see some helpful links) Or just getting a new computer altogether.

Have you tried doing a Disk cleanup? Vista and 7 makes a lot of System Restores, which can take up a lot of memory. Once I did a Disk Cleanup and It cleared about 30 Gb's of useless stuff.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I'll try turning down some of the settings, I really don't have enough for a new computer though :/

I've done Disk cleanups before, so I only got rid of about 18 MB this time. I think the main problem is Vista being so large and taking up most of the space on the drive.

Hard drive space WILL affect the game performance. Since it's used for extra texture space/whatever isn't currently needed, you might want to free up 3-4 gigs of space on your laptop, and then see if that helps at all. Even if it doesn't visibly help, your computer will definitely be happier.

When you next do one (I suggest now) that when it comes up with all the bits that are taking up space, click on the "More options" tab at the top of the window, and click on the "Clean up" button of the "System Restores and Shadows Copies" section.

Problem is though, Vista is taking up over 20 GBs, and it looks like the remaining 10 is all necessary stuff, I'm going to see what I can delete though.

Just tried that, but when I clicked it just said are you sure you want to get rid of this, etc and then nothing happened.
