Ever since I ponied up the cash for a Gold Live membership, I have been contemplating giving Team Fortress 2 a spin, since The Orange Box was already sitting on my game shelf. However, the mission-oriented gameplay, combined with the fact that the game is well over a year old, have me worried that I would end up entering a realm of long-practiced strategies and techniques and facing a steep learning curve. Is this a valid concern, or should I be able to jump into a match (albeit as a newbie who will most likely spend a good while getting shot up)?

Team Fortress 2? Mission Oriented? Since when?
Age doesn't matter it's still good and there aren't strategies other than shoot those guys that aren't us!

I wouldnt bother trying, nearly each game is loaded with mods or hacks and there are no updates.

I got the orange box for H-Life and Portal.

Not TF2.

Jump in. There is actually a class made just for people like you, who are new to TF2 and want to learn the ropes. It's called the "pyro." All you have to do is hold down your trigger and press forward. Easy, huh?

I jumped right in and I did alright. It is actually a lot better in that regard than Halo 3, for instance. The best thing about it is finding the class for you. You should also start off with player matches rather than ranked ones.

Buy the PC version if you can. The 360 version is only a third of the PC version in terms of playerbase and content.

TF2 on the PC is a much more refined game as well, and I think you'll find it more forgiving than if you played it on the 360.

If you can't get it for the PC, I would honestly recommend passing it.

I recommend that you rent it first. It's been a long time since and I played. Back when I played, there were hardly any servers on at all. I don't know about today since my 360 is dead right now.

The 360 one isn't as good in my opinion as we don't get all of the updates like the sandman ubersaw ect but it is still mindlessly fun to play even though there are a few hackers who hoast some games its still pretty fun :D

Pfft. A true pyro master doesn't need his or her second analog stick. Its all about the strafing. This leaves your left hand to do something else, like making a sandvich, playing as another pyro on a different system, or pleasuring a woman. Ah, choices.

The thing most people overlook about TF2 is that you'll die a lot, but so does everyone else. It's not a game where your average lifespan is meant to be very long. (Except maybe Engineers or something.)

Just play as one of the easier classes in non-ranked matches to start. Hopefully you won't get a lot of modded servers. They suck.

So try being a soldier, pyro, heavy, or medic at first. Then observe and get used to the other classes. Eventually you'll find your niche.

Don't try sniper, demoman, or spy first. Those are often surprisingly hard classes to play in most games.

Expect a few noob deaths until you know your basic class-to-class responses. Pros will have the upper hand for a while but soon you will be able to beat them by: not fighting them head on if you can't aim as well; remembering where they attacked from, A nice clean Bonk or just picking a good counter class.

(Pyros avoid Soldiers unless Solider is unaware or busy as solider can rocket you before you reach them)

(Scouts NEVER attack a heavy head on)

(Medics, Engineers, Spies and snipers are not easy kills even without there main advantage; do not expect to wipe them out just because there is no sentry here or the medic isn't hiding behind anyone)

You'll most likely get killed a lot as only the hardcore play it now. And haxxors.

Though it is very fun, and I recommend you try it.

I play it on Live and I'm no where no hardcore, or a haxxor.
Oh. and Congratz?

Was playing a few nights ago actually, not as many people play on Xbox as on the PC (which i would recommend doing). Found myself kind of out of place with my "team", some servers were empty, and of course lets not forget the lovely people on their headsets mouthing off. Give it a shot on the PC if you can, if not give it a shot on xbox anyway its mindless fun if nothing else.
Hmm thats weird, I usually have no difficulty finding a game. If it does say no games available I search again and there are suddenly like 5 with open slots. And rarely play with anyone who has a headset.
But you're right, definitely fewer people play it on the 360 than the PC.

TF2 is pretty bad on the 360. I would try it out first, you'll die alot but who knows you might like it.
