I still play occasionally, and there are usually plenty of people playing, but expect to die a lot when you start... like a lot.

At first, yes, it will be difficult. Rediculously so in fact.

What you need to do is start off with the scout. Ignore the game, just concentrate on learning the maps back to front. Watch for where the engineers usually put their turrets.

Then, use engineer when ever possible. They're a very easy class to learn, you just have to know where to put the turrets. Chances are you won't get the big score from them unless you place offensively, but they're a great starting point.

Another class to use is the medic. They're exstremely usuful and easy at the basic level. You can basically just hang behind big guys.

Use these two classes and learn the ins and outs of the other classes though observation before having a good go.

You will die. In fact, you will did a lot. But keep going, the rewards are great.

I would definitely stick to the PC version of TF2 and a lot of games if I had a gaming PC.

Go with PC and screw the whole console thing... PC is cheaper, and online doesn't cost anything.

None of the bugs are fixed, so prepare to be killed by people using exploits. PC Version is a lot better.

Ever since I ponied up the cash for a Gold Live membership, I have been contemplating giving Team Fortress 2 a spin, since The Orange Box was already sitting on my game shelf. However, the mission-oriented gameplay, combined with the fact that the game is well over a year old, have me worried that I would end up entering a realm of long-practiced strategies and techniques and facing a steep learning curve. Is this a valid concern, or should I be able to jump into a match (albeit as a newbie who will most likely spend a good while getting shot up)?
Don't worry about it, just jump in. I only started playing on it about a month ago, and although I don't play on it a lot, I still give them a run for their money.

I recommend trying it at least once or twice.

I tried it once, got no kills and got killed about 50 times.

I ended up playing by myself to grab some achievement points and then went back to Portal.

The PC version is a million times better ( ive seen my friend play it on his gaming pc).

As for the 360 version, i found it to be horrible. The first game i got in too was a spawn kill fest, there were turrets right outside the spawn. The games ive played were all quite laggy, also no one ever seems to actually try and complete the objective, they're more interested in killing.

Another handy tip I used was to play with a friend 1v1. I learned a lot about all the abilities of each class that way, and I now know the maps A LOT better.

It sounds kind of cheap, but if you have a friend who will patiently let you run around in circles trying to find your way around Hydro without just headshotting you, you'll become a much stronger player when the real battle starts.

Better yet, if your friend isn't an experienced TF2 player, you'll both learn something!

I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions on how to get started. Since TF2 only has territory control modes rather than straight-up deathmatches, I had no idea how sophisticated the gameplay might be. I am comforted to hear that general running about and shooting is the norm.

I had considered running System Link games by my lonesome to learn the maps (that's how I ended up with an Achievement for TF2 without ever actually playing the game online), but I like the idea of finding a buddy for that purpose. I will have to check if my usual online pal has recovered from his staph infection.

Also, I would like to point out the following:

I am aware that the PC version is more complete, but I am assessing what I can enjoy with my current game inventory.

I play it nigh on constantly.
It's my favorite online shooter as of yet.
At the beginning you'll get owned a lot (Trust me I know)
Some games are really laggy, I recommend just leaving them if it gets bad.
If you own it, give it a shot.(Engineer is a good starter class)
Oh yeah and USE A MIC people with mics will generally help you out if ask questions.

I still play TF2 occasionally. There are still many people who play just for fun and aren't necessarily that good. I'm not that great at the game and I still absolutely own sometimes. If you're stuck then just build a well placed sentry and a dispenser and watch the noobs run into it again and again. Of course, there are also plenty of experienced players like you said but there's a good enough balance.

I played it for the first time online over a friends house the other week.
There's A LOT of experienced players on there now. It was still pretty enjoyable though. But there is going to be a very steep learning curve considering the caliber of players out there.

I have Team Fortress 2 on the Xbox 360 and it isn't really that much fun. I hear the PC version is waaaaay better so you should probably try that out.

Not just the hardcore players. The first few matches you play you will be noobowned, but you get better. I did, and I can fare against the mass. Besides, in EVERY FPS game you play, you get noobowned.

I found TF2 a lot easier to get better at, since some classes are better against other classes, so it just required that I practice a certain class when I'm being killed by a certain one. Now I can go whatever class and kill whatever.

It's more fun because Valve updates the PC version with new gear and maps.

They people modding it may ruin your fun, but keep searching until you find a good server. Not everyone is pro at it, there is people like you -- playing for the first time.
