This Tuesday I was ruffling through my atic; looking for some old games and found The Orange Box.
I originally got it for Half life & portal, but on Tuesday i thought i'd give TF2 a go. (why i didnt at the time is another story...) After some stressful moments with Steam; *sigh* I got it up and running.

Reading up on chat and other sites, is see lots of "complaints" about updates and how much they changed the game. Personally i feel games like Team Fortress and Counter Strike have had their day; pushed out by ModerenWarfare.
I'm enjoying the game so far but I cant help but wonder if the game is being kept alive by fans and not in demand.

Are things still going strong? and any thoughts on what to expect in coming patches?

If they ever make a Team Fortress 3 or any other shooter as silly as that im sure people will move on over to that, untill then if it still has players it must be good.

Well, I just played CounterStrike about an hour ago, and damn is that game hard to get used to after all the Modern Warfare I've been playing. That being said, it really seems like both Team Fortress 2 and CS: Source have their dedicated fan bases, and they really are games that people can come back to after a while and enjoy. Frankly, I don't think a game like Modern Warfare is even good enough to "de-throne" FPS classics such as CS and TF2.

TF2 will never be out of date. I mean, people still play Team Fortress Classic and it's been what, 11 years?

I'd have thought that the fanbase keeps any game alive, and as there are still thousands of people playing the game all the time, I 'd say it still popular. Also, it just happens to be fun without any driving plot or story, and tbh, I find things like MW2 too realistic and dull. TF2 (in my opinion) is the height of Internet gaming.

Well, I personally don't like TF2 that much, but a lot of people still do. And with all the updates it constantly gets, it definitely isn't out of date.

Class updates make things more interesting despite what all those Targe/Eyelander haters say.

It's not that fucking hard to kill them guys!

One could say though that Valve is appealing to the "Completionist" Niche, what with all the dozens of (fucking hard to get) hats and 326 achievements (I got 320, don't judge me).

But I have yet to find a game better than TF2 for mindless killing just for the hell of it.

I don't like all this TF2 MMO-like garbage. But the updates are cool. I love me some hot Flare Gun action.

Ultimately, this arguement is defeated by a quick glance at the Steam Stats page. Counter Strike Source and Counter Strike is consistantly the second and third most played games on Steam (pushed down one place by MW2, and its tides of fanbois). TF2 is constantly around the top ten. I don't think either of them are remotely close to death, while I expect MW2's last rites will be read around the release of Call of Duty 7.

I expect TF2 to keep going for decades to come. MW2 on the other hand I think will be pretty much dead within 2 years.

I love TF2, and it is hardly out of date.

It is one of the most popular FPSs out there, and if out of date means "not like CoD" I'm happy I don't have that opinion.
I got sick of Modern Warfare type games since World at War (Gameplay not setting).

Edit:

This is exactly what is going to happen, maybe slightly more than 2 years though.

Games like Modern Warfare 2 and Bad Company 2 will never put Team Fortress 2 out of date. TF2 is one of those 'Internet Classics', along with the original Quakes and Unreal Tournaments, in that even after years of being around, people still play them for the fact that they're fun, and no amount of IWnets is gonna stop that.

There is simply no game out there like TF2, it's way too "unique", so regardless of how old it this, between it's weirdness and the updates released by VALVe, it's very VERY far from dead.
And btw, I've read around here that there are 2 Escapist servers, too.

TF2 is credit to team!

I mean apart from http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC, there are still more people playing this regularly than most other MMOs.

Steam tells me there are 962 TF2 servers with people playing at this very moment. Let's try Counterstrike...Over 10,000 non-empty servers you say?

Now...what's the betting that Mewtwo can't pull in that many?

TF2 out of date?

It came out in 2007 and has an absolutely huge user-base on Steam, and it's constantly being tweaked/improved/balanced by Valve.

This is it's day.

As for CS:S, I periodically drop in and out and there's always plenty of people playing - you can mod them so far from what they are you've got a huge variety in how you want to play.

CoD games die because they're releasing a new iteration every year now.
