One thing many of you are neglecting to realize is, Portal is PART of the Half-Life universe. It is not unlike Opposing Force or Blue Shift. So saying "which is better, TF2, Portal, or HL2" is not entirely fair. It should be "TF2 or everything else in the box". That said, considering the quality of "everything else", one has to go with Half-Life 2, Ep1, Ep2, and Portal. Team Fortress 2 is, undeniably, the best multiplayer game of the year. I've seen die-hard Halo fanboys sneaking really long play sessions of TF2 like they were looking at a porn magazine in a closet and trying to deny it later. Half-Life 2 and it's ilk, on the other hand, are down-right the best single-player games of this year, and indeed, ranked in the highest tier of the best games of all time. In short, as a gamer, you owe it to yourself to get the Orange Box.

I personally think that Portal is really just Half Life with a different gun, so there shouldn't be any animosity between them. Like Vigormortis said, they are in the same universe and use the same physics engine.

Aditionally, though, they're too very different sorts of games. Half Life 2 is a balls-nailed-to-the-wall thrill ride through a wonderfully detailed dystopian future that starts off slow and kicks in with such speed that it never lets up ever again ever, which is a fine way to play the game, because it keeps your nerves so hyped up into adrenaline-rush Happy Land that even when you've turned the game off to rest your thumbs you still feel heady and breathless, like you've had a particularly good orgasm.

Portal, on the other hand, is the perfect game to sit down to for a few minutes, just to relax, and stand up three hours later thinking that your life has been, if not changed, made slightly better in the long run.

It's really a choice between an orgasm and a spirtual experience.

Except, in this case, you can have both.

Half-life 2 > Team Fortress 2 > Portal.
Not really counting the Episodes. Half-life 2, for me, is the epitome of playing a great game on your pc. TF2 is an addictive multiplayer experience and Portal is a superb experiment. But Half-life 2 is the dog's bollocks.
Sorry to go against the grain. Apparently Portal's the holy grail around here.
My thoughts exactly. I love HL2 more then the other two. And while Portal was new, clever, funny, etc, I found TF2 a bit more funner in the long run. I still love each game like a son.

So being "the dog's bollocks" is a good thing? Am I getting that right?

Portal is a completely different game yes it uses the same graphics engine and physics, but it has a hugely different gameplay.
Care to elaborate?

And same basic mechanics, except replace gravity manipulation with space manipulation and add more platforming. The controls are roughly the same, though Portal is simpler as there is less to do, and the graphics look roughly the same and the only MAJOR difference is that Portal doesn't have you running and gunning and crowbarring crates--effectively, Portal could be done in Half LIfe 2, except that it wasn't. I think that's what I'm trying to say.

portal, I have no idea why I love it but I do.

Also TF2 would be a very good game if my xbox360 didnt lag out to such an insane degree whenever I press a button.
