I recently bought the Orange Box off Steam to get HL2 and Portal, and obviously that means I now also own TF2, and it looks like fun, but a lot of people have told me the game has bee ruined by micro-transactions and hats, with certain players getting bought advantages over others and games being over run with people just asking for hats and trades instead of playing the game.

Is this true?

In my experience with TF2, the answer is no. I will say, though, that this will probably depend on the servers on which you play.

Hell, you have the game already. Why not give it a shot and see for yourself? TF2 is loads of fun.

Well, um... how do I put this?

1.7 GHz Single Core Processor.

I'll just leave it at that.

Theres nothing that you can buy that you cant earn in-game, so the store is for those people who are really impatent.

Personally I've had a lot of fun with TF2 when I can get on it (I have to go to a friends to play) but with regards to hats, they'll only ruin the game if you join a trade server, or so I've found.

The water's fine, most people only complain about it because...

A. They've played it excessively
B. Are anti-cosmetic activist who are either envious or spiteful at the idea
C. Like to complain

Other than that, it's still very much a fun game.

There is nothing you can buy in the store that gives you a gameplay advantage, you can also unlock pretty much everything without paying for it. Having said that, the store has rather spoiled the innocence of Valve games, suddenly everything's monetised and it's like going in to your favourite independant shop to find they've been bought out by a massive chain and the old boss is gone with some guy from head office in his place. In theory there's no change, but something feels off all the same.

Also.
2.06GHz single core processor from 2004, plays the game fine on high settings with 1GB RAM and an old X1600gpu. Try running it, you might be surprised.

I use to play TF2 with one of those. Unless every other piece of hardware is terrible, you should be okay to play. Obviously not on highest settings, but it'll still look pretty regardless.

No. People just like to exaggerate because they feel the micro-transaction system ruined everything. You can play the game just as good with no special items. The game is designed so although other items allow for more play style they are not necessarily better in anyway. In addition, hats are cosmetic and do nothing. The fact that people fetishize them so much is actually really really scary.

I'll admit that i stopped playing when the trading and the micro-transactions started up mostly because i was annoyed that my favourite servers were being overrun with trading nonsense. I'm told that everything calmed down after a few months, but i'm in no hurry to go back to TF2.

That saying, TF2 is a great game and was my main game from the moment it came out to the day that i got starcraft 2. Then it just got too 'looty' for me.

Just play it and find out for yourself, because chances are you won't find anything wrong with the current system in place. I played vanilla TF2 back in the day, and I think what we have now is better by far. TF2 was starting to get a little stale for me before they started offering new ways to play the classes.

My only complaint with TF2 nowadays is that the once near-perfect balance is kind of ruined by all of the unlockable items. (If you're feeling like TL;DR, just read the first and last parts.)

Not to say that game isn't fun, but I feel that the game had a much better balance and was much more fun back when all of the items weren't out. It doesn't make it unplayable, I just preferred vanilla, though I think there are still servers that disable said items. I honestly HAVE gotten tired of TF2, but I logged at least 150 hours into that game. It's still hella fun and I get on every now and again. Don't be bothered by the hats, they're just cosmetic. You should be fine, as has been said. Knock the settings down and it'll run pretty well I think.

It's much harder to find a good server now, but the game is still very much worth a try.

Short answer: nope.avi

As people here have already said, you can basically get all the items as drops/unlocks/crafts. I think.
There are no items that you can only buy that give a bonus to something that would change the gameplay (like items in most Free-to-play MMOs).
Also, TF2 is actually old-ish, and you should be able to run it.

I don't really think those ruined the game, but I definitely liked it a lot more before the updates started coming out. Traditional TF2 was my favorite.

Well, that's debatable to an extent.

For instance, there are really very, very few situations in which it's better to have the soldier's default spade than The Equalizer.
The Eyelander, KGB, or any kind of special melee weapon is a bit of a requirement in degroot keep.
The Degreaser and Flare gun are a top choice among pro Pyros
Any hat with particle effects makes headshots much harder (visually distracting elements, modified silhouette with a non-hitbox area; should be obvious)

Don't get me wrong, the weapons are by far not an "instant win", and there's never a significant advantage, just sometimes more options.

I used to recommend TF2 as a beginner's game, but with a new weapon every week, I would definitely say it's too complex to get interested in now.

All those weapons are droppable, craftable, and some can be gotten by achievements. Hell, there's even trading, which makes it easier still. The point still stands that nothing in the store gives you an advantage, I have every weapon without spending a penny. I mean there's certainly issues with modern tf2, but that's not one of them, not by a long shot.

I didn't see the point of the qualifier "items you can buy in the store". With some very sparse, all the store items can be attained ingame through a lot of patience. Then again, it's patience and luck; if you simply never get a Degreaser after months of play, you may simply not become a competitive pyro.

I've been playing TF2 for the past two years and I can safely say that I never even knew this problem existed until I read the forums.

Maybe I was just lucky but I seriously doubt the game is "ruined" because of these "micro-transactions"

People complain that the introduction of the Mannconomy store -- with vintage items, a store, unusual hats, and trading -- ruined the game. Team Fortress 2 of the old has definitly changed, but I don't think it was for worse, but there are some parts of it I miss.

But still. It's excellent.

Oh, and join us!

TF2 hasn't really been ruined with the micro transactions or the cash shop. Most servers don't have traders on their servers unless you hunt for it, trade servers are there but are full of a bunch of ass hats that will constantly rip you off for fucking one gun because its vintage, trade servers ruined the game, not the additions the game has. I've been forced to go to trading as a way to getting a lot of my items because now drops happen every fucking blood red moon, has anyone else had this issue, and you should really play TF2, just dodge the trade servers.
